The Fab Five

Anyone watch ESPN's documentary on Michigan's "Fab Five" that debuted last night?

Like the other ESPN documentaries, I thought it was excellent. Since I was a senior in high school the year the Michigan freshmen played Duke for the title (and I was a Duke fan living in North Carolina at the time), the show had a nostalgic feel for me. Whether you love them or hate them, the program showed how the Fab Five dramatically changed college basketball, for better or for worse (coaches more willing to play freshman, players with tatoos, baggy shorts, black socks).

And I never thought I would say this, but I came away from the documentary really liking Jalen Rose.

Ditto on Jalen Rose. I have not watched it all yet. I caught the first 30 minutes and last 30 minutes (need to watch the middle part tonight). I know they tried like heck to get CWebb to participate, but that would have made a really good documentary truly greatness. The whole deal with the booster and The Timeout has appeared to really sour him on anything Michigan related. The recruiting process was really interesting as well. They are definitely correct that something like that (4 top 11 players and 5 in the top 50 going to the same school) happening again is next to impossible.

That was a great documentary. Never knew about the confusion coming from the bench during The Time Out.

He almost called timeout when he got the rebound (just before he traveled) - then he did it again. I dont buy the bench thing. He just didnt know they didnt have any left. I cant believe how much those punks were able to get away with on interviews and such, their behavior was uphauling - people were frightened of these "thugs" - I kept hoping someone would come out and bitchslap the little brats.

Like almost all the 30 for 30s this one was excellent as well.

I was watching this with a buddy and during the entire two hours I was going on and on about what a chump I thought Chris Webber was throughout his whole career.

and then in the last 30 minutes of that program something amazing happened....they just run Chris Webber over with a Mack Truck.....and then back it up and run over him again.

All the **** I talked about....essentially gets repeated by Jalen Rose and all the others.

Essentially calling him out for all the things I thought he represented....
-Not being able to man up and admit his mistakes
-Playing the Victim Role way too much
-Blaming other people for his shortcomings

I was a fan of the Fab 5 back in the day....but I look at it differently now.
All the woofing and stupid **** they did would have been halfway cool if they were like Miami and could call themselves champions.

But they were not champions.

You know who were champions? The Seniors on that Michigan 1992 Michigan team who were on the 1989 National title team.
Duke, UNLV, North Carolina.

I cant really take these guys as seriously because they didnt do it the right way....and they ulitmately fell short.....and that 1993 North Carolina team is one of the more underwhelming National title teams of the past 30 years.

Its not like they lost to 1992 Duke, 1996 Kentucky or 2007 Florida.

The same woofing and generally jackassery was repeated about 8 or 9 years later when Chris Webber was with the Kings.

and as good as the Kings were....they never made it to the Finals.

"Christian Leattner is a *****"

I laughed my *** off when Jackson said that.

I thought it was a great documentary as i vividly remember that team even though i was 13 when they were freshman.
I didnt know that Jackson and King were Texans, and that Jackson lives in Austin.

All of the players on the court stated that it was made clear in the huddle that they were out of timeouts. If Chris Webber nutted up, it's his own fault...not some scrub's who probably wasn't even in the huddle.
