The End is Near

The White House announced today $300 million in federal aid for Detroit. Of course, this will not even scratch the surface on the $18 billion deficit they have generated - if that was even what it was designed to do.

What does the money go for? Knocking down buildings and public transportation! They have pissed away their money, so let's just make everybody else pay for their disastrous policies.

The end truly is near for the good old US of A.

If you want to see criminal waste, take a look at the defense procurement system. This is chicken feed in comparison

Couldn't be more correct Sache. Don't know the side you see it from but as a Vendor and brother of a contract evaluator/award giver I can speak from experience that they waste that much probably on a daily basis.
Worst aspect of it is that it is built into the system. It cannot be fixed. Only a complete overhaul will bring any changes. Think anything like that could ever come from our current political authorities? Not a chance, they can't even do a budget, no way will they ever fix one.

It seems we have a choice of government help that functions either/or inefficently or ineffectually or is of no help at all. A lot of people like to point to the New Deal as the start of bad government. I think it started later. The money the New Deal spent on public buildings, art preservations, rural electirication and the like were a good deal for the goverment that heped the poor, stimulated the economy, helped all economic classes and kept a balance between money spent and value delivered. God know somewhere, somehow things later got screwed all to hell

bureaucracies ossify over time; they get where they can;t do anything but they don;t do it at great cost. Think the byzantine empire or the otttomans as the exemplars here but the czar's russia is also a good example.

We are so big we can't do anything but spend money. Which would be ok if anything flowed back from it.

We don't agree on much on this board. I think we can all agree that we get a poor value on the money our government spends. I would like to see a shift in the national debate away from spend more/less to spend the same and see how much more we can get for that same amount.

Sorry, Larry. We are currently seventeen trillion dollars in debt, and we spend more than a trillion dollars per year above what the government collects so the debt is quickly rising. We cannot continue doing that without collapsing our economy. Therefore your hope of shifting the debate is pretty useless.

The spend more/spend less debate has raged on the entire time that we were accumulating 17 trillion dollars of debt. Its not working. I would fight to spend the same while getting more for our money. Fixing how government awards contracts would be a great starting point. If we could hold spending constant, inflation would eventually eat away at the deficit then the debt. We would also be able to continue to provide the same level of service by paying fair market value for what we are buying.

I'm not an alarmist, but it does seem like things are getting grim from a debt standpoint.

When companies get inefficient, they collapse and new companies with better ideas come forward. History proves governments tend to follow this cycle on a longer time frame. Now, government and business have an incestuous relationship and inefficient/crooked big businesses are being funded by the tax payer (in more ways than one). We will need to hit rock bottom before the general public will stop worrying about Miley Cyrus.

That is just a continuation of the same debate that will have no winner and has resulted in massive debt. We could significantly reduce our deficit just by buying what we are currently buying at fail market value. Learn to be an incramentalist because you aren't going to get spending levels less than revenue overnight. Don't let a balanced budget be the enemy of real spending cuts.

We better have a stronger military than anyone else because a whole lot of people would love to hit us if we don't. Eliminate waste not strength(I cant believe I typed that) At least everyone working will suffer under this administration. Democrats already looking for more revenue to carry out their revenue distribution. Take from the workers and give to the workless. While we are at it let us give amnesty to 20 million more people so they can get their share of redistribution because they do low paying jobs Americans don't want to do.

I understand you are all full of taking other peoples money and sharing it. The last time I looked defence of our nation was actually one thing our bloated government was supposed to do. Spare me we need to spend more on education we already spend more than any other country. Maybe if we could fire bad teachers I would consider it. How about we do a little cutting of everything including education food stamps and the myriad of other government programs. What would you be willing to cut beside defence?

If money was the main factor in U.S. education, we'd have a nation full of intelligent folks instead of hoardes of low information nitwits that couldn't survive without the government tit.
