The Edge (the movie, not the guitarist)

Anyone ever watch this? I remember seeing this in theaters and it didn't get a lot of pub, but still one of my favorite movies. Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, Elle McPherson star, and forgot that the guy who plays Michael on Lost is in it too.

Really well written story and the Bear (played ably by Bart the Bear) was absolutely the most convincing trained-animal-posing-as-vicious-killer I've ever seen.

One of my favorite exchanges:

"This doesn't FEEL south, Charles."
"Just because you're lost isn't to say your compass is broken. It IS south."

I thought this to be a great film. Great suspense and breathtaking scenery. I love the wilderness as long as wild animals aren't after me.

Unlike some folks, I like most of Alec Baldwin's work very much and consider this one of his better performances. Anthony Hopkins is ...well Hopkins, and that is usually a great thing.

It has been years since I saw this last, but from what I recall Hopkins' character is a voracious reader and therefore knows all this stuff that he has never had the chance to apply in life until he is stranded in the middle of nowhere - like the compass he makes from a pine needle. At least I think it was a pine needle, but it's been a while.

Written by David Mamet, which is why the dialogue rises above your standard lost in the woods movie.

I was surprised he wrote it, being familiar with his previous work and plays, specifically, Glengary Glen Ross and House of Cards.

Yeah I was impressed with Mammet's screenplay - the thing I noticed is that there didn't seem to be any wasted dialogue. Everything ended up having some kind of meaning as the movie went on.

The book was a great example because he got that nature survivor book from his secretary, and at one point early on in the movie he asks his wife "I wonder why she got me this." As it happens, you get the feeling the secretary might have had some sneaking suspicions.

Bart the Bear may have been what was lacking from the current Robin Hood movie. Maybe he could have saved it.....
