The Doors

Last night I watched the latest Classic Album documentary on VH1 Classic. The debut album of The Doors was featured.

I learned that Ray Manzarek's left hand was the bass guitar for The Doors and that his right hand was piano/keyboards, and that John Densmore loved him some Brazilian beats.

Of course all of the insight from the band members and the production crew was cool, but the best thing was probably Robby Krieger rocking a wolf shirt.

I always really liked the doors because other than the "bluesy" aspect, they sounded like nobody...

About the bass player.. I think that was only on the first album, then they started calling in studio guys...
maybe even on a few track on the first album as well.

If you get a chance pick up a copy of "Wonderland Avenue." It's a great book.

Yep they definitely used studio guys on the albums, but Ray said that they never brought in a full-time bass player, because he fell in love with his keyboard bass setup.

I love it when the studio guys break down the finished album songs into their individual tracks. The bassline and drums from Soul Kitchen sounded so awesome pulled out by themselves.

If you like that, get this...

I saw the Doors July 1968 at Dallas Memorial Auditorium.
I knew right then that I just had to learn to play the guitar.

Saw the Ed Sullivan performance of "Light My Fire" the other day. CBS told Morrison not to say "Girl We Couldn't Much Higher". Course he said it anyway - live television without any delay. Ed refused to shake anyone's hand. The band was told they'd never do the show again. Morrison's response? "So what. We just did the Ed Sullivan Show."

The Doors... one of my all-time favorite bands of the 60's - 70's. Nobody sounded like them and timing was everything - Light My Fire comes out June 1967 as the Summer of Love launches - the long version of that song may be my favorite Door's song. LA Woman is a close second.

i know i'm in the minority here, but..... never liked 'em [ducking for cover]

I got your back, Admiral.

I can understand why they are a phenomenon, but I've never been tempted to own a single song of theirs. An occasional hearing on the radio was always plenty.

I saw their live appearance on Sullivan back in the day (I think I was in Jr. High), and they were the first drugged out looking band I remember seeing. It seemed like a moment of transition from the long-haired but sharply turned out rock bands before and the totally informal, hippy look of the bands that followed.
