The Definitive John Mueller's BBQ post/he is

First of all let me apologize to the moderators for starting an entirely new thread on this subject, but I think Katy and Robert will understand and will allow me a little forebearance under the circumstances.. A man's livelihood and family are literally on the line and I don't want there to be any confusion or incorrect facts. I speak from authority because I own the building and the assets of John Mueller's BBQ restaurant.

John is open......for the time being. There are serious financial problems due to a variety of reasons. John's barbeque has always been top grade and if anybody has had a bad experience he apologizes and assures you that it is the exception and not the rule.

Part of the recent operational problem has been with Time Warner's inconsistent digital telephone service. John can call out, but customers can't call in. The number is (512) 220-5243. Time Warner has assured John that the problem will be fixed today. (The lack of phone service is what prompted the multiple threads on whether JMBBQ is OPEN or CLOSED . )

The conundrum with barbecue is that if you cook too much, you have to throw it away at the end of the day because it does not keep well overnight. If you don't cook enough, you run out too soon and have to close. When people keep seeing that you're closed, they quit coming by because of the uncertainty. Consumers like certainty..... Customers abhor UN-certainty.

When John first opened 4 years ago , it took 5 months to get approvals from the City of Austin' s various bureaucracy gestapo to reopen a business which was already zoned and operated as a restaurant. The 5 months completely devoured ALL the operating capital before the first brisket was ever sliced. He's been behind the 8 ball ever since.

John asked me to assure all his customers that he is doing the very best he can and hopes to be there for a long time. John has a wife and three kids and basically gets up every morning at 3 am to start the fires and works all day long without much help. If you haven't been there before, give it a try. I know John would appreciate it.

I'm sorry to hear of the financial problems and hope like hell John is able to make it. I have always loved his BBQ. Thus my confusion earlier this week that prompted my question in another thread. I'll try again in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the update.

as a landlord myself, it sounds like he needs some rent abatement

I'll head back too, somtime in the next few weeks.

Thanks for clearing this up. My office used to go there once a week. No longer, it had just gone downhill too far. Not the food. The service, forks and spoons, etc. Hope they get back on their feet.

I think there needs to be a Hronfans lunch. I know there needs to be. What we should do though is plan it and get him some notice so he can prepare the right amount of food to accomodate us. That would suck to exhaust his supply at once for the day. Also, if you say you will go, then GO. That would also suck to tell him X amount and have them not show.

We can help this great guy out and ourselves too. It would suck to have it go away. I was part of the group that Sua rounded up at the Baylor game years ago in Waco. A group of us headed in.

I have not gone in as much as I have cut back on red meat some. But I need to get back and make this my red meat fix more often.

Thanks Loop...appreciate the help.
I'm also pleased to announce that we have cut a deal with Woodrow's to be at the Parmer Lane site every Friday night 4 pm-til ?. If you've ever been to Woodrow's Steak Night, this is the same deal with BBQ.

This is a LOCAL business. They produce some of the BEST cue in central Texas (which of course means that it's some of the best in the world).

He deserves our support. And, as an aside, Time Warner deserves a beat-down.

Any of y'all who can think of a way to publicize Meuller's, DO SO.

Maybe John Kelso could write about the plight of the local businessman, particularly since it is a holy spot of smoky goodness?

Loopy - write something and stick it to the top of cactus. Sometime next week or maybe even this week. I agree with the Local Busines concept and I'd like to help out.

Thanks to all for the kind words. If JMBBQ doesn't make it.....I'll survive. I'm not sure John will. It's his life and his heritage.

I'm trying to round up a group of guys I party with to see if they wanna do a big ole lunch there one Friday soon. I've never eaten there (I'm partial to Kreuz's & Luling City market) but now is as good a time as any to try it. Hey, if it is as good as advertised he might just make some new customers too!

Tuesday of the coming week? I'm serious - lets go 20 deep and anyone who orders water gets smacked. Drinks are pure profit for our boy.

On Manor Road about 1/3 of a mile east of I-35. If you take Dean Keeton across 35 it turns into Manor and it will be right there on your right.

Although I sympathize and will patron as always, Time Warner phone service (or any other digital phone service) is a bad, bad move for a business that relies on phone calls. The technology isn't reliable enough -- SBC is the way to go.

If anyone went to the first Friday John Mueller's BBQ night at Woodrow's, John would be curious for any feed back/ suggestions. Thanks

Don't know if the JMBBQ went off this past Friday or not, but when I called to verify the lady who answered the phone didn't know anthing about it. She told me about a Steak Night on Tuesdays.

Do they have the ability to take credit cards back up and running?

I can take clients, business development lunches, etc. there, but need to do it on a CC. As a plus, I can drop some decent $$ on such lunches. Last time I was there, though, the machine was down, and looked like it had been for a while.

The wife and I went to Little Woodrow's last Friday night around 6:30 intending to support John Mueller with some business but the guy said the barbecue wasn't ready yet. Didn't quite understand that.

Also, somebody needs to tell LW's staff that they have this deal going on Friday. Mrs. Guapo called first and was told there was no Friday barbecue, only steak night on Tuesday or something. I promised her that Hornfans can't be wrong so we went anyway. As noted, they were set up but the barbecue wasn't ready yet.

We ended up going over to BB Rover's because we were hungry and BBR's is smoke-free and LW's isn't. I guess LW's is just outside the city limits.

I've gotten really spoiled on this no smoking thing.

Guapo, I am trying to get people together on Monday for a lunch at John's on Manor Road. Stop by and grab some cue.

BB Rover's is smoke free! Man Austin has changed a lot since I left in August.

I don't know if I could come home if Mueller's went away. Any way us out-of-staters can help via mail order? Hell, I'd donate straight up if that's the only option.
