I was with my Boy Scout troop on the way to Ely canoe base when the bus had a flat. Upon realizing we were in Clear Lake, IA we busted out our acoustics and played some Don McLean.
I always equate that date with 8 December, 1980.

Not to highjack the thread, but your post got me to thinking about how many important or significant people have had their lives cut short in some kind of terrible small plane / helicopter crash.

Besides the 3 legends previously mentioned, a few others I thought of:

Kobe Bryant & daughter (plus 7 others)
Payne Stewart - golf pro
Lynyrd Skynyrd - rock star
Audie Murphy - WWII's most decorated soldier & later actor
Gary Francis Powers - U2 pilot survived being shot down over Soviet Union
John F Kennedy, Jr. & wife - son of President JFK
