The Cuba Question

I found the "Cuba" question during the debate to be very interesting.

What would you have answered?

Would you sit down with Castro's brother and talk diplomacy?

I would find it very hard to do so.

It was a great question.

I don't see anything changing in Cuba as long as either of the Castro brothers is running the show. Raul is just as committed to the revolution as Fidel. Even if Raul was inclined to make substantive changes, I don't think he would as long as Fidel is still alive.

I think our best hope is that the cubans turn on Raul soon after Fidel kicks the bucket.

They both basically had the same respnse. Except Obama's hand went this way and Hillary's hand motioned the other way.

the ball has always been in Cuba's court. we have zero motive for any initiative.

and obama's answer was staggeringly naive (as are almost all of his takes on foreign policy).

Personally I think our Cuban policy is more of an appeasement of Cuban-Americans who live in Florida, than really in the national interests of our country.

cuba is the only one who stands to gain anything in normalized relations. they have nothing to offer us other than cigars.

Dialogs are always good. What happens before/during/after the dialog is a different matter. But taking dialog out as a matter of position is simply stupid. Mostly this is done to score political points with one group or another.
