The Contaminants in Your Food

weak stomach? Seriously? That bothers you? Do you realise how small those bits and particulates are? They don't reallly bother me in the least. Illness causting contaminants are a HUGE deal, but eating some fly eggs (which are generally rendered inert due to salt/cooking/perservatives) or some bug bits doesn't bother me at all.
Some people must have very sensitive stomachs.

That is old news. The info is so old it really is not news.

I will say there is a difference between what is allowable and openly rotting, molding food that is allowed to build up on machinery until it eventually drops into food being processed. I have lost respect for FDA inspectors who did not shut the peanut plants down until everything had been properly cleaned.

What is even more disturbing about the peanut paste/butter salmonella contamination is the company had two plants that had the same filthy conditions. You wonder if management had their people just clean areas where they knew inspectors would look when they made a visit.

Good thing I don't like canned mushrooms.

Fly eggs are one thing... I mean... I can see how flies might lay their eggs on food and it be pretty much impossible to wash them all off.

But rats?? that shouldn't be happening!

And that article totally turned my stomach. I'm going to make my students read it

Here's a dirty little secret:

USDA by law has to have continuous daily inspection of meat, poultry and egg products. That means there are inspectors at every single slaughter facility, as well as at every single processing plant that makes a food product containing 2% or more meat/poultry product. And there are inspectors present every single day, for the entirety of every single shift.

FDA inspects the rest of our food supply. Some places, FDA shows up every other year or once a year at most.
