The Big Shootout - December 6, 1969

Fifty-five years ago today, December 6, 1969, was one of the greatest games in UT football history, with Texas beating Arkansas 15-14. It had everything, the setting, the flow of the game, the determined comeback, and just the “magic” of the game. I was only ten but remember it. I would love to see your comments about the game, particularly those who attended the game and/or played in it.
.
One thing that is noticeable is that there was no “showboating/dancing” after a play. Players had a task to perform and it was expected, not a cause for egocentric-celebration. In fact, after his touchdown run, James Street innocently handed the ball to the Arkansas defensive back. That might be considered taunting today and probably cause a brawl. Life was “simpler” back then.

I watched that game on LHN with fresh eyes. It’s unbelievable Texas won that day with 5 TO’s (if I recall).

The day I fell in love with the Texas Longhorns as an 11 year old:hookem:

I am still amazed that Randy Peschel ever caught that ball. Over the shoulder, defender on him. Wet conditions , no gloves.
Just in awe.

What was amazing to me was that Coach Broyles obviously knew what was coming because Randy was double covered and yet James put the ball out there and Randy, being an old HS QB, pulled it in.

I, as a 12-year-old, watched the game on tv with my older sister. She gave up on the Longhorns in the 4th quarter and went to her room. I remember running down the hall screaming for her to come watch after the successful 53 Veer pass. We were big James Street fans.

First of all, I'm an old fart...

Second, around here, only a young @Texanne was actually at that EPIC game (as far as I know).

Me, I was a HS football JV and had just turned 16 . I idolized UT football.

Me, Dad and brother watched on a new COLOR tv my Dad bought.

OMG, so many emotions during that game. I was so stressed out!!!

Won't bother to post all my game emotions, but I was SO gratified Street engineered an INCREDIBLE comeback victory that day!!@

15-14 🤘

... ALL, all Arkansas fans that saw or remember that game will NEVER, EVER recover from losing that game.

I’ve watched it a few times on LHN and DVD. One thing that is funny to me is watching the cheerleaders do cartwheels on the field right past the players after Peschel catches the 4th down pass. You would never see that today.
