The Best BBQ in Texas

OK, made the trip to Lexington, TX to eat at Snow's BBQ. This is the spot Texas Monthly selected as number one in bbq for 2008.
The Link

The brisket was incredibly moist and tender and very good. The ribs were over cooked, but delicious. The chicken was fantastic and the pork steak was heavenly.

I would have to say this, along with the charm of being small and only open on Saturday took it to the top. I don't know if they will be there next year as any of the top 5 places can be the top on any given day, they are doing a hell of a job for a one day outfit. Well worth the road trip. Tootsie (pit boss) is a hoot.

As I noted on the original thread, I'm basically from there.

My sister and I ran up there last weekend and procured a feast for my family back in Houston.

We arrived at 8:15 and were lined up out of the door.

One of our old babysitters was working the register.

Yeah, Tootsie is a hoot.

We weren't smart enough to call in an order, so we reduced what we intended to get, but the line behind us was groaning when we ordered six whoile chickens, twelve links of sausage, a rack of ribs and a whole brisket.

Still piping hot and delish when we got back to Houston even with the stop at the cemetery, the Yegua and DiLorio's in Hempstead.

I have a friend who lives in Lexington and is a big time BBQ geek. He said the issue with Snow's is consistency. Sometimes the brisket is perfect and other times it's like leather. Apparently Texas Monthly caught them on a good day with a good brisket.

The TM article made it sound like Tootsie fired up the smoker in the wee hours of Sat morning and had briskets ready by breakfast. If that's accurate I'm surprised at how fast she smokes them, but that could explain the inconsistency with the brisket.

I was there about 8:10am. I actually did pre-order the Tuesday prior. I told the guy I did not want to order too much as to save some for everyone else.

We ended up getting 1 whole chicken. 1 large pork steak. 2 Racks of ribs and 1 whole brisket.

The Saturday before this we were headed there at 10am and called on our way to get some reserved and they said it was sold out. Luckily we hadn't left the city limits yet.

I did not want to take chances on this run and would recommend pre-order to anyone.

I posted this on another thread but I cannot rank a place #1 in the state if they are open only 1 day a week for 4 hours. If Kreutz or Louie Muellers were to be open for 4 hours a week, I bet they could seriously rock as well. The key is consistency and to do this all week long. Just my 2 cents.

So what?

Next year, they'll have somebody else.

It's nice to see them popularize a tiny joint in a tiny town.

I intend to hit them up on my way to DKR this fall. Hopefully by then, some of the pub will have rubbed off and I can still get something at a decent hour!

I read something interesting in Delta's on board magazine of all places. They had a big article on BBQ and their BBQ "expert" said he could never name the best type of BBQ (NC pig, Memphis ribs, KC ribs, Texas Beef, etc) or best place because they were all so good and each had its own great qualities. Now, is it a fun subject to debate? Sure.

I think of that article when I think about the Texas Monthly list and them naming Snow's as #1. And I agree that its hard to rank a place only open for 4 hrs a week as the best BBQ place when others put out great BBQ 7 days a week. But, how cool is it that Texas Monthly introduced the masses to a little place, in a little town, that puts out great BBQ on Saturdays? I find it fascinating and it adds to the overall appeal of this hidden gem. Will it always be in the Top 5? Probably not. But, pretty cool for this year.

why are they only open 1 day a week? seriously if they ever wanted to be open full time wouldn't this be the time to try with all of us who have never been there wanting to go due to Texas Monthly.

Seriously though I hold a place that can have great BBQ in a tuesday night when there are no crowds way above a weekend warrior

Austin's in Eagle Lake is top 50-- nothing beats the double stack sliced brisket sandwich after a duck hunt

Vincek's in East Bernard does our deer sausage-- never tried their Q, but their half and half spicy sausage is good-- homemade kolaches are good as well

I paid roughly $110 for everything including sides. I did not bother to look at the itemization as this is what I had ball parked.

Had some Snow's BBQ yesterday. Friend's mom was 3rd in line at 8am. We just grazed on the brisket and pork all damn day. Also picked up an apple pie from Royer's in Round Top for dessert. What a great day.
