The Basketball Diaries

Never been a huge DiCaprio fan, but I caught this when flipping channels last night, and I must say, it was a decent performance. It was a little over-acted at points, but overall, worth the 2 hours I spent watching it, Mark Wahlberg notwithstanding.

the times where i have not really liked dicaprio were when i thought he was miscast. i haven't seen all of his movies or anything, but i always felt like he was the wrong guy for basketball diaries and in gangs of new york.
in basketball, he is not anything close to a convincing athlete and that is hard for me to get past, seeing as how carroll was so gifted athletically.
both great movies, though.

oh, i agree. i just see a movie like that - one that i really like - and wish they would have chosen a different actor so that he wasn't so thoroughly lacking in an area that is central to his character, even if not central to the message.

Catch Me If You Can
The Departed
Blood Diamond
The Aviator

He was great in all those. I think he's done a good job post-Titanic to pick roles that didn't portray him as some sort of teen idol. He's also become Scorsese's "new De Niro", in that they do multiple movies together. That doesn't hurt. They have two more coming out in the next year or two.

he was great in all those...he is a great actor."The Departed" he kicked *** in that !!

the only thing i remember from Basketball Diaries, was that hot blonde chick DiCaprio bedded. Very nice.

I liked him better in many movies before he made Titanic. I was a fan of Jim Carroll's autobiographical book, The Basketball Diaries, and I liked the film. DiCaprio did a fine job handling the role, per Jim Carroll.

I also would recommend "This Boy's Life" with Robert Di Niro and DiCaprio made a couple years before Basketball Diaries and before "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".

IF anyone hear questions whether Leo can act, they need to rent 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape'.........one of the most underappreciated films of all time.

A young Leo DiCaprio giving a superb performance.....Johnny Depp in his prime....Juliette Lewis before she burned out.....excellent small role for John C Reilly.......just a wonderful film.
