The Baseball Gods Have Decided ..........

that they do not approve of the Cliff Lee trade. He is obviously an inning eater, but he won't even have a .500 record until August, and the jury is still out on whether he will have a better than .500 record for his stint with the Rangers.

He's been an innings eater at least. Nine innings both starts. Also9 will give the Rangers a chance to move someone out of the rotation. When it's Lee, Hunter, Holland, Lewis and Wilson it will be darned solid top to bottom.

I was very impresed with Lee's pitching Sat. night - he ate up innings and got strikes / outs. Bottom of the ninth 1 or 2 outs and 2 strikes? he let one pitch get over the plate put the tying run on. He didn't lose it.

Have faith, this guy will make a difference when we really need him too.

Surely there's a sarcasm meter at work here.

I was hoping this post would say that the baseball gods have decided that the 'stros have suffered enough and that the team has been sold to some one who understands baseball.

yep, more evidence today. This reminds me of the Nolan Ryan year in Houston. I was pretty young, and a pretty good Astros fan. Nolan had an incredible year, except for his win/loss record. One of the weirdest lines you will ever see:

8 wins, 16 losses, ERA around 1.40ish.

But the good news is that the way Cliff eats innings, it almost doesn't matter if he wins. He is saving the bullpen every time. If Cliff loses every start, but pitches a complete game every time, the Rangers bullpen has an advantage over the other team 100% of the time in the next game. So, somebody needs to do the research, and after a Cliff Lee game, I bet the Rangers are about .900.

Kramer, I just saw your post. I'm not betting against him, I'm just saying it's not a sure thing he will have a winning record, it's up in the air.

Now look at the irony. Nolan's 8-16 record, Cliff's 1-2 record. The same lack of support, the same ratio, 30 years later.

Cliff Lee is going to be just fine. For whatever reason he isn't getting the run support when he's pitching. This happens to pitchers. He is a great pitcher and I'm glad he's a Ranger.

after last night's no decision, Cliff is 2-2 and his 2.57 ERA is slightly higher than the 2.34 before he got here.

I'm not surprised, it still reminds me of the Nolan situation. Last night was an exception in that Cliff finally tired earlier.

I wish O'Day could have stayed in there longer.

Last night was Lee's introduction to the Texas Summer Heat. It really wore on him. This could be a deal breaker. Stay tuned.

i honestly think the start 2 starts ago when he pitched 120+ pitches took its toll. Seems to be that way, 2-5 starts later those kind of efforts come calling...Even before the 4th and 5th when he was getting outs he was going deeper into counts...just didn't have his usual stuff.

Wash has a problem handling pitchers, always has. Oliver, Nefti, now Cliff have had some problems w/ overuse of one kind or another. Sometimes you just have to give guys a day off (pen), or suck it up and take a starter out when it's wise to do so.....even if the crowd calls for your head. It's a part of the job

good point Horn. I think the heat is about to break. Weather.com lists McKinney at 95 degrees as of 3:45 p.m.

If it's the same in Arlington, tomorrow night's game could be maybe 6-8 degrees cooler than the last two games.

heat should break tomorrow, and Ranger are playing in Florida against the Rays. Lee gets to go up against another ace, forgot his name, but he's 15-5.

should be good.

H69 - listened to a pretty sober local sports radio talk show the other day that had a long discussion on Lee - they said they think that game may have already convinced Lee of what his decision needs to be.... he was clearly bushed the other night. Like you said, stay tuned.....

Worster, what did you think of Nolan's comments about the weather? different spin for sure, something like, we plan on playing games in October and pitchers would rather pitch in 70 degrees in October vs. 40 degrees.

I would love to have him here until he retires, but if he doesn't want to be here.......**** him.

We have wallowed for years worrying about the heat. It's hot everywhere in August except Venezuela. Man the **** up Cliff. This is a great team.

OC - I heard Nolan's comment and if I was Lee, that would fire me up and imake me stop and think. Good psychology by Ryan - Lee will listen to that rational when the talks start. It might also challange Lee at the same time... It might be damn hot in August but as a pitcher, but would you prefer being in the Bronx on an October night when it is 40 degrees and the wind is blowing?

Poster: TigerPride >I would love to have him here until he retires, but if he doesn't want to be here.......**** him.

Must be an ou fan. You want him to be here until he retires, but if not, then F him....Unreal.

I want Lee here. Period. He seems like a great guy to go along with being a helluva teammate. Nothing but respect for somebody like him. He's a class act.

H2R - I agree with you about the comments about Lee - unreal. I too want Lee on this team - it would not only be good to have an ace on the staff for the obvious reasons, but he would be good for the pitching staff, the team and the locker room.

Thanks Woo, me too. Having Cliff here could possibly be the difference between being a contender for the West vs being a contender for the world series. Hearing CJ saying 3 weeks ago that he's learning from Cliff on how to pitch vs a particular team says a lot. (staying @ the ballpark till 1am watching film of Cliff attack hitters)

I owe folks like OUE an apology by lumping them in with TP in my comment. Some sharp OU posters in here. When I saw TP post that Cliff Lee should "man up" I had to double take at the screen.

While I probably wouldn't say it quite like TP, I do tend to agree with the sentiment. The lack of any loyalty is what has kept me from being a real MLB fan. Hell, all pro sports.

Lee is a hell of a pitcher, and I understand the need to put yourself in the best situation, but if you have no loyalty to the team and its fans, don't expect them to be loyal to you. That said, hopefully the new management will be able to convince him to stay!

Son,

I understand. Players are made out to look like corporate whores- go to the highest bidder. I know a lot of hi profile players are pressured by peers to "take the highest bid" so the pay scale can benefit all players. That's hard to say no to unless you want a lot of players pissed off at you

After awhile I try to look at it from the players angle, as well as ours (fans). I am no fan of unions, but that's the world these guys live in. I'm just hoping the guy comes back. If he goes to the Yanks we'll never get by those bastids.
