Any word on who will represent Texas at this event which is scheduled for 4/19 and 4/20 in San Diego, CA? It'd be cool to see Engle and Faucette team up for it.
Do you know who on the squad is any good on the beach?
I can remember when Dag used to come out to Aussie's & play, & she was really good. She'd bring along some of the other starters and the rest, though, and they were below average to downright awful in the sand, getting beaten by local A players.
Point is, as you prolly know, it's not an easy transition to make. Are Engle and Faucette any good in the sand? Do they have chemistry together in twos?
At 6'2" and 6'3", who's gonna play d, running down all those shots? If I were building a team, with the rules as they are now, favoring big blockers as they do, I'd want a massive but agile blocker at the net and a quick defender who can still hit. Not saying they can't do this, but who does what...or do they alternate?
Engle teamed up with Jennings last year and did quite well so I'm assuming Engle. I was only assuming Faucette b/c she's from San Diego. However, Chelsey Klein is also from San Diego so maybe Klein and Engle it will be.
The transition is definitely tough and I'm sure Faucette has yet to practice on sand seeing she's just back from a very long stay in China and still in Colorado with the Nat'l team.
It's looking like we are sending the entire lineup. They changed format from sending two to sending eight. As we only have 7 on the spring lineup, I'm assuming one of our graduating seniors like Michelle will go too. I can't imagine that any of the 3 olympic girls will go since they haven't been spending much time in the sand.
I hope all our combos kick ***, and I'm sure many of the pairings look terrific on paper, but any of you know how important and elusive the "c- word" (chemistry) is in doubles.
You can't hide anyone in twos. Both people will touch the ball every point, and if there's a weakness, the opposition will smell it like sharks smell blood in the water.
What's hard here is that these ladies just don't play doubles much, so it may be hard for them to develop any chemistry. Of course, everyone else ('cept the westies) is in the same boat, too.
Wish I could be there to see how it all unfolds.
BTW, too bad they aren't playing by the old rules. Taking away the sideout, making the court smaller, adding antennae, loosening handsetting
, etc, didn't hurt the indoor game so much, but it ripped the very heart and soul out of the beach game, imho.
Karch Kiraly told me himself that if these rules were in place when he hit the beach, he probably would have never gotten anywhere in the sand. Just "too small even to be the little guy." (His words).
Wow.
Sad to think that the best all-around vballer and best beach player (and imho one of the greatest athletes) of all time might never have played the beach game because of some rule changes made to better suit the game for tv.
Ashley and Kiley took down the cornbots in the semis ( a sign of things to come in the fall!!!!!). In the championship, they put a beat down on USC's Talor Carico and Jessica Gysin winning 21-8 and 21-12. thecollegiatenationals
As pointed out it will be on tv on CBS College Sports on May 25th at 1 P.M. EST.
What is also remarkable is that we won it without one of our top players (Destinee Hooker) who is with the USA Volleyball Team and would have been in track anyway.
I hope UT has the tower in orange soon for these remarkable ladies who did a great job!
We have 47 National Championships in all sports right now before this one. I wonder if we are going to claim this one. We will see. I think we should. It was won in competition.
What a disappointment in coverage. They spent several minutes on a silly eating contest and a few seconds on our ladies. Great job anyway girls. You deserved better coverage.
That was a pretty pathetic job by CBS. They must not have been striving for ratings since they showed best band and eating contests. I guess they saw no interest in tall beautiful athletic college women playing beach volleyball.
