The Andromeda Strain was a good one not mentioned. That was some hardcore stuff.

Another good one is Star Wars in a more personal sense. Luke's indifference to the war gives way to involvement once the war takes his home and family. At some point or another we all get smacked up side the head by society and have to deal with it.
