Just when you think a Gregory match can’t get anymore thrilling, well it gets ratcheted up to some whole other electrifying level. We’re already at the level of the Incredible Hulk Roller Coaster, and if this keeps escalating, well, people won’t need to bungee jump off Bloukrans Bridge anymore.
I love this team’s mind-set. It’s all “Game On, Girls!” I mean, they’re really into it, highly focused and intense.
Here’s a small smorgasbord of highlights:
* Juliann had too many bombshells to count, but to sample one, how about the one in the first set that ricocheted off the defender, nearly removed her arms, and screamed up into the upper deck?
Not sure they ever found that ball. Hey, I’ve heard of losing balls in golf, but in volleyball?!!
* Rachael and Michelle have been working on their thing. It was more of a groove thing with Missouri, and again tonight. Ray-A had a bunch of extreme shots, but there was one in the 2nd set where she got especially fanatical with the angle and power. Reminds you of Dwight Howard throwing one down.
And you see how high she gets? I wonder if sometimes when she’s way above the net, she goes, “Hey girls, I can really feel the wind in my hair up here, you ought to try it!”
Kocher, by the way, has been pulling off some extremely difficult sets, most impressive.
* Jen Doris is so awesomely passionate and exuberant now, it just rocks. I could select one of her spikes or roofs, but I’m going instead with that crazy up she had. You have to love it when a 77-incher throws down for a dig. She brought that ball up in the middle of a long rally too, and I was like, “(Deleted), that was Jen Doris who dug that ball!!”
* Lauren Dickson, I can’t decide. It’s either that one arm dig where she awesomely speared the ball in the middle of a roll, or that fab kill out of the pipe.
There was more. Sarah was in the zone and ripping balls out of the air everywhere. Sha’Dare was all-world, showing mogo expertise in all six volleyball skills.
One last treat: in the last set, with the game on the line. The Jayhawks had been knocked back on their heels with a series of prototypical Faucette blasts. At 23-all, crunch-time, J changes up: sinks a ball way, way deep in the corner. It was…artistic. It’s like, wait, Thor reads poetry too?
There was amusement outside the game, as well. This dude, Thad, who always wears the “Set Me Up with Hannah Allison" T-shirt, managed somehow, despite possessing no volleyball skills whatsoever, to miraculously score the JetBlue tickets. Then he rocked a respectable cart-wheel, and then to top it off, brazenly appropriated a cuddle from a nearby cheerleader. Panache, dude!
Speaking of Hannah, she was suited up, didn’t have the burnt orange pajamas on, and was limping a lot less. I wondered if we’d see her back in action, but she wasn’t even running horses on the time-outs, and it didn’t materialize. Michelle’s holding the fort, and plenty more, so let’s hope Hannah gets back to 100%.
Now, let’s focus on Wednesday. Senior night. Texas A&M. Revenge. This match has it all. Maybe even Juliann will sing the national anthem. Gregory will sell out. Block off your calendar, and plan your day. Get there early for the senior ceremony!!
