Thai food

We moved back to Austin 6 months ago and still haven't found a GREAT thai place yet - do they exist? If so, where?????

Try Madam Maam's on the Drag. I find that place to be pretty good. It is at 26th, where it dead ends.

madam mam's is really great. there is one down south too, at westgate. its one of those places where i want to try every single thing on the menu. i'm about 1/4 of the way through so far. the only thing i haven't been down with is that catfish dish with 6 peppers next to it on the menu. it burned my face off, and i love hot food. i wish they served beer and wine for dinner though, or at least allowed byob.

thai kitchen is really good for some things too. i work near the one on bee caves and live near the one on guadalupe, and i eat at both. i think the one on guadalupe has better cooks. they always have red snapper and i get it for take out close to once a week for dinner.

Gak,
I was curious about the snapper Thai Kitchen has advertised on the dry-erase board. How do they prepare it? I noticed you could buy 1, 1.5, or 2 lbs. What would you recommend for a party of 4?

stuck, my wife does not like thai food and is lukewarm on fish, so i get it for take out on nights she is working late. they don't advertise it on the dry erase board, but you can get it as a filet for i think $11.99. that is what i get for just me.

you can get it steamed or fried. i always get it steamed.

since i always get the filet, i am not sure about a party of 4. i guess i would ask the server. i have had the snapper with the curry sauces they advertise on the dry erase board, and think the #21 is superior. i will tell you the #21 is pretty hot. you can ask them to adjust the heat down and they will.

a good starter there to share is the thom yum goong soup. i also love their tofu & vegetable pad thai.

gak, there is supposed to be another place over by the 7-11 area on the drag. Not the place behind the 7-11 but near to it. I forget the name. But I have been told by 3 different people it is great. Why a place would open up so close to Madam Mam's is beyond me.

If any of you want great Indonesian food, Java Noodles. On Sunday they have a buffet starting at noon till I think 3. It is awesome.

thanks for the rec loop. i just looked at java noodles' menu online and i'm definitely going to go check it out for lunch soon.

and i'll drive by and see if i can find the place on the drag you're talking about. the place that is a block west off guadalupe that i think you're referencing, the name escapes me but i tried it once and wasn't impressed. but i only tried it once so i could have gotten the wrong dish or was there on an off day. i'll go check it out.

Madam Mam's is much better than the other places in town..

If you have not tried their Kao Soi, be sure to do so. It is easily one of my top 10 dishes in town.

The story behind the place, how the two rekindled their love and brought it here is cool. (Madam Mam's).

Gak, try the cocount curry soup with veggies at Java. It is addictive and will clear your sinuses. They also serve Satay with peanut sauce.

I am a fan of Thai Spice Cafe (there is one out in Lakeway and one in West Lake Hills). Their curries are better than the ones I've had at Madaam Mams but I think Madaam Mams noodle dishes are better (Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, etc).

This thread got me craving some curry yesterday, so the gf and I decided to make our own cocunut curry chicken dish.

It sucked even though we followed the recipe fully. I guess we'll try a different recipe next time.

If that is the one across from Star Bar and Little Woodrows, I don't remember it being anything special... but considering their location, you imagine they have to have a pretty good customer base to pay the rent.

I do thai terra pretty often, as I work near there. I really like Thai Passion nearer to congress. The wednesday yellow curry special for $5.50 is the bomb.

Another good option is Satay on W. Anderson Lane.

Also, it's not Thai, it's actually Vietnamese, but Triumph Cafe on Spicewood Springs Rd, just west of Mopac, is not bad.

Triumph Cafe - Voted Most Romantic Patio is 2002.... or whatever that sign reads...

I have mixed thoughts about this place. I like the neighborhood feel. I like how they have a mini-World Market / coffee bean shop inside. I just wasn't that impressed with their Pho, and I judge all Vietnamese restaurants by their Pho.

I hit Thai Passion quite a bit as I work downtown. Good spot. Not a fan of Satay.

Also not a fan of Satay. It may actually be the worst Thai food I've had in Austin, the chief complaint being that it's kind of bland.

My favorite is Thai Spice, which is very good. As for great, I still haven't found it.

I actually think Satay is pretty miserable. My favorite place is Thai Village in the Lincoln Village shopping center on 290 and I35 across from the gold's gym. Not everything there is great, but both of the coconut based soups are amazing, especially the Tom Ka. Also, the Nur Lard Nar (beef with noodles in thai gravy) is amazing. If you get it extra spicy it is one of my favorite dishes in austin. All of their curries are good and their clay pot is amazing. Some of the other food is meh, but those items are incredible.

the thai spice in lakeway is way better than the one in west lake hills. i agree on the madam mam's noodles being better.
i ALWAYS get pad thai chicken xt spicy, xt pad thai sauce. ******* awesome.

i frequent the one on westgate often since it's 3 mins away. also frequent the thai spice in lakeway mainly cuz the gf works there. the coconut shrimp sauce is amazing. the sashimi slices are very nice as well. i had the crispy duck the other day with a 3 pepper spiciness level. it was fantastic!

'Sub Sin', in South Austin, is the best Thai restaurant not called Madam Maam's that I have eaten at.

Anyone been to Little Thailand lately--out past the airport on 71? It's been like 5 years for me, so I'm not sure it's even there anymore. Damn good Thai food.

Yes, Little Thailand is still there. I love that place. Went several times last year. Dick is still around, serving his famous Thai bloody mary's.

The Austin Chronicle did a big story on them last year too.

Not adding anything constructive here, but **** both madam mam's & thai passion. Wanna know why? I'll tell you why.

Madam mam's - any place that chases patrons out onto the drag because they think you didn't tip enough needs to die. Now.

Thai Passion - The food is alright, but the waiters are too stupid to figure out how to split a bill two ways. Die.
