This will be the 34th meeting between the two UTs. Tenn holds a 21-12 edge in the series,
including a three game winning streak. The last Texas win was in 2008 in Austin, 73-59.
Both teams will have new head coaches for this game. Both come into Sunday’s game at 6-1.
This is the third in a four game stretch for Texas over 12 days, from Dec. 08 to Dec. 20. For
Tenn, this is the first game of a two game Texas road trip after a two week layoff from Dec. 03
until Dec. 16. In six days’ time, Tenn will face off at Texas (Dec. 16), at Baylor (Dec. 18) and
hosts Stanford (Dec. 22). The Lady Vols were upset in their first game of the season by
Chattanooga on Nov. 09, by 80-71. Since then, the Lady Vols have reeled off six straight wins,
including a 102-57 thrashing of North Carolina in their last game. Texas started off with five
wins before losing to UCLA, 42-62, in Houston. They rebounded in their next game against
La-Monroe, winning 77-49. Horns played both of those last two games without Chassidy or
Chelsea, their two best and most experienced 3pt shooters.

Meighan Simmons (#10, 5-9 Jr. G) leads three Lady Vols in double figure scoring at 17.9 ppg.
Bashaara Graves (# 12, 6-2, Fr. F/C) adds 15.1 ppg and Isabelle Harrison (# 20, 6-3 Soph. C)
averages 11.0 ppg. Cierra Burdick (# 11, 6-2 Soph. F) and Ariel Massengale (# 5, 5-6 Soph. PG)
average 8.6 and 8.6 ppg, respectively. Simmons has hit on 45.1% of her shots while taking almost
21% of the Lady Vols’ attempts (46-102). Four players that have played in all seven games are
making between 48.5% and 55.6% of their FG attempts. Graves (42-79, 53.2%) and Harrison
(33-63, 52.4%) provide consistent scoring inside. Off the bench, Kamiko Williams (# 4, 5-11 Sr. G)
has the best FG% at 55.6% (15-27). Simmons leads in 3s made and attempted at 12 of 34 (35.3%).
Burdick has the best percentage among starters from BTA at 40.0% (4-10). Williams has the best
overall 3pt percentage at 3-5 (60.0%). Other 3pt threats include Massengale (6-17, 35.3%), Taber
Spani (# 13, 6-1 Sr. G/F; 4-18, 22.2%) and Andraya Carter (# 14, 5-9 Fr. PG/G; 6-16, 37.5%). Four
Tenn players have taken at least 22 FTs, including sharpshooter Simmons who has gone 21 of 23
(91.3%). Graves has gotten to the FT line the most and is tied for making the most FTs but has the
lowest FT% at 59.5% (22-37). Massengale has hit on 22 of 30 (73.3%).

Three players are grabbing almost half of the rebounds the Lady Vols average per game. They are:
Harrison with a team leading 8.1 rpg; Graves at 7.9 rpg and Burdick who averages 6.9 rpg.
Massengale, as the starting PG, has 27 assists to lead the team. Burdick is second with 19 assists.
Harrison ranks first with 20 blocks. Burdick is second with 8. As a team, Tenn has 36 blocks.
Simmons’ quick hands help her lead Tenn in steals with 2.3 spg.

The top five scorers for Tenn, Simmons, Graves, Harrison, Burdick and Massengale, have started
the last two games as a group. Simmons and Burdick have started all seven games while Graves and
Harrison have six starts. Massengale has three starts while Carter has five and Spani one. Those
five starters average between 21 and 29 mpg. Spani, Carter, Williams and Jasmine Jones
(# 2, 6-2 Fr. F) have played in all seven games and are averaging at least 14 mpg.

Horns are led by four players averaging double figure scoring: Nneka (17.9 ppg), Chassidy
(17.6 ppg), Chelsea (11.0 ppg) and Cokie (10.9 ppg). The issue for the Horns is whether Chassidy
and Chelsea will be released to play Sunday after missing the last two games with mild head injuries.
Nneka leads in FGs made (47) and attempted (88). She is at 53.4% from the field. Even with missing
the last two games, Chassidy is second on the team in FG attempts (57). She has made 29 for a 50.9%from the field. Imani leads the team in FG% at 56.3% (27-48). Cokie is also making over 50% of herFGs (30-56, 53.6%). Chassidy continues to lead in 3pt shooting, hitting on 10 of 21 (47.6%) from BTA.
Next is Ashley, having made 5-17 (29.4%). Chassidy has the best FT% on theteam at 83.3% (20-24).
Brady (7-10, 70.0%) is the only other Horn hitting at least 70%. Nneka, who leads the team in FTs
made and attempted (28-42) and Cokie (16-24) are making 66.7% of their FTs.

Nneka is averaging a double double with her team leading 12.9 rpg to go with her 17.9 ppg. Imani adds
8.1 rpg while Cokie (5.6 rpg), Anne Marie (5.3 rpg) and Celina (5.1 rpg) are all over 5 rpg. Four Horns
have at least 13 assists, led by Celina’s 36 (5.1 apg) and Brady’s 17 (2.4 apg). Imani has 19 blocks
(2.7 bpg) while both Nneka (13 blocks) and Cokie (11 blocks) have hit double digits in blocks. Celina
(13) and Nneka (10) lead in steals with three others each having 8 steals.

Five players are averaging between 22 (Ashley) and 30 (Celina) minutes per game. Four others
average between 16 and 20 minutes. Nneka and Celina have started all seven games. Empress has
started all six game she available to play in while Chassidy had started five games in a row before
missing the last two due to a mild head injury. Imani, Brady, Ashley, Anne Marie, Kayla and
Chelsea have played in all games they have been available for although that has ranged from
one for Chelsea to seven for Imani and Brady. Nadia has gotten into six games.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game:

Texas Tenn

Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Graves (6-2 Fr. F/C)
Cokie (6-4 Sr. P) Harrison (6-3 Soph. C)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Burdick (6-2 Soph. F)
Ashley (5-8 Fr. G) Simmons (5-9 Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Massengale (5-6 Soph. PG)

The Texas lineup might change if Chassidy is cleared to play although she could come off the
bench initially. Of course, both she and Chelsea could miss this game as well. Burdick is likely
to have a significant height advantage over any wing player that Texas is able to put on her.
Simmons has provided a spark for the Lady Vols against Texas the last two years. Tenn has
been able to hit from BTA in the last two games. Perimeter defense against the Lady Vols’
three point shooters in Simmons, Massengale, Burdick and Spani will be critical to the Horns’
chances to pull off the upset. Our frosh and JC transfer players will have to be very conscious
of leaving those 3pt shooters open. Tenn will present another strong, physical challenge inside
for the Horn posts. The Tenn posts will have their hands full dealing with Nneka, Cokie, Imani
and Anne Marie. Two excellent shot blockers will anchor the defense for both Tenn and Texas
in the Lady Vols’ Harrison and UT’s Imani. The rebounding battle between the two teams is
not likely to be for meek and mild mannered.

Shot selection inside the arc and BTA are similar. But, where Texas could be missing their number
shooter, Tenn brings their full arsenal into Sunday’s game. What the last two games have had in
common for Texas is that both UCLA and La-Monroe collapsed inside while guessing that Texas
would not be able to hurt them from the perimeter. It worked for UCLA and for a time, for
La-Monroe. I would expect that Tenn will attempt the same if Chassidy does not start/play. The
Horns did show some improved outside shooting against La-Monroe, especially from Brady and
Ashley. This will need to continue for the Horns to have a chance in this game.

Not only will Tenn come into this game knowing that they have won the last three games against
Texas, but they will come in off an impressive win over North Carolina and with two weeks to
prepare for their next three games. Texas has one good half against La-Monroe to built on. The
good thing for the Horns was that all three freshmen guards and one JC guard scored from the
perimeter. Brady and Empress hit for double figures and both Celina and Ashley were 50% from
BTA. Imani did not have a stellar overall game but still managed to put together a double double.
Similar efforts and results will be needed against Tenn.

I think TX has a real shot at this one. TN is also a young team. They have already lost a game to an unranked team. I think whoever wins the battle of the boards wins this one. Someone needs to contain Simmons. Both teams rely on their defense organically turning into offense or not at all. The team who wants this one more will take it. I hope it is TX.

94-75 FINAL Tennessee

31 points for Chas! our bench was ineffective with only 8 pts. 34% shooting won't cut it against Tennessee.

We missed Cokie inside. One person said she was sick. Another said she was out for disciplinary reasons. Good effort but our offense is really bad. They rarely run plays. Imani kept playing from the top of the key, as if she was a guard. I have faith this team will play tough defense but their offense is hauntingly familiar to one I'd hoped we wouldn't see here again. Tennessee is a tough, Top 10 team. I think all of their starters scored in double-digits. They do a great job of turning offensive rebounds into points. We don't. In m opinion, Texas isn't a Top 25 team but should be later in the year. But what do I know. I spend the entire game yelling at the refs. Once again, horrible.

Agree that we missed Cokie...in a big way. Our offense looks bad because Chassidy is the only guard with a shot. Every time Celina was in the game, TN sagged off of her to double Nneka, and Celina missed shots. Defenses will keep doing that until this team can make some outside shots, and our post players will continue to suffer for it.

Rough, physical game. Sometimes the games resemble a rugby scrum. But this was easier to watch than the UCLA game, especially the second half. I felt that our guards did a much better job in this game, being able to hit some outside shots and get to the FT line. Surprising that pts in the paint (Tenn 30-UT 28), pts off T/Os (Tenn 15-UT16), 2nd chance pts (Tenn 23-UT 23) and fast break pt (Tenn 9-UT 6) were so close. Big difference were the 25 pts off the bench provided by Jones and Spani for Tenn while Brady led the Texas bench with six pts. Tenn lost Harrison to an ankle injury with about six and a half minutes left. Didn’t appear too serious although she was held out of the rest of the game. Hope she will be able to play Tuesday against Baylor.

Really tough loss for the team. But I’m looking forward to conference play. First up though is Cornell at home and then a swing to California for the Maggie Dixon Surf ‘n Slam Classic after Christmas. Horns should have a very good chance to build some positive momentum to enter conference play with.

Agree Babhorn, very rough physical game, not the style of play the team is used to, but one they need to experience before B12 play. I also agree they looked much better than against UCLA and that is a positive step in the right direction. Shooting was abysmal, but much of that was caused by Tenn's defense. Imani has improved her shot under the bucket up to today, but she seemed overwhelmed, and I'm sure she was. She'll learn, today was a good experience for her. I forget Nneka is only a sophomore, she has played so well this year. Her shot was off today, but she has improved so much since last year that I am sure the game today will toughen her up too. I think the whole team will grow from the game today. I'm so glad to see the team making positive strides, even in the face of a loss.

By the way, the "reading" by Imani on the big screen was so cute. She has quite the personality! Call me, maybe!

A 19 point loss at home is always disappointing, but the second half saw the best play I have seen from this team all season. The guards, especially Davenport, are finally beginning to drive to the basket. The half-court offense is still a stagnant mess, but in this kind of run up and down helter-skelter game, it mattered less, and only 5 turnovers in the second half.

I was hugely impressed with the rebounding of the TN team - talk about boxing out and crashing the boards. Let us see how they do against Baylor. TX hung for a half with a very talented and athletic team and it was a total pleasure watching Simmons and Fussell go at it and each other on both ends of the floor.

I came home and watched Vandy spank an Oklahoma team decimated by injuries. I think the Big 12 is down this year and there is a good chance TX could finish in the top half of the conference, maybe as high as 4th behind Baylor, KS and WV. I think making the NCAAs is a realistic goal for this team, but there is a lot more basketball to play.

(I still wish something could be done about the awful deja vu I too have watching the half court offense - it is not 1997, and it didn't work then either)

T---TRUST -your team member to do her job & know your job
E---EFFORT -simple- EFFORT
A---ASPIRE- reach for goals thought unattainable
M---Measure- always ouality check your basics

I think you have a mixture of players on this team. Some care, some whatever, and a few that want to strive ahead. As the saying goes your team run time is only as fast as your slowest member.

I haven't seen the team much yet this year. Chassidy blew me (and Tenn) away in the second half. I was delighted with Stafford. She has good instincts, is pretty quick, and already a terrific rebounder and shot blocker. If she can develop her shooting touch, look out.

Texas really needs a shooting point guard. As mentioned previously, opponents can triple team Chassidy because no other guard can shoot. Getting Cokie back will be huge to take some pressure off of Imani. Again -- I think Tennessee is ranked too low. I'll be curious to see how they do against Baylor Tuesday but I suspect they could give them a game. Texas isn't a Top 25 team but I think they have the potential to be.

This is a team criticism and not just about Chassidy, but you can't have your top offensive threat with a 0/6 in the assist/turnover columns and win very many big games.

I wanted to wait a while, to give me a changed to objectively watch the game a few more times. And I think Cokie's absence (illness) can't be understated. She would've change the whole complection of the game. We rarely see her get 1 on 1 coverage, so we forget that she's actually very very difficult to guard. Tenn would've been forced to play a zone or double team her, and she's much more proficient at passing out than Imani and Nneka are. Texas when fully healthy is a top 15 team. Not having Chelsea to guard Spani was also a huge mitigating factor. The lineup for that game would've mostly consisted of Emp, chas, Chelsea, Nneka and Cokie which is by far our best offensive and defensive lineup respectively. Tonight will truly validate or expose Tenn because Baylor is going to pressure the heck out of them and turn them over. BU will win going away.

Yep, Baylor is spanking Tenn, 13/0 right now. Tenn hasn't hit a shot yet, and of course they hit everything they threw up at Texas.
