Horns (12-0; 1-0) are 2-5 vs WVU (10-3; 0-1). Texas won vs Kansas while WVU dropped their league opener at OU. The teams have split their four league games, with the home team yet to lose. WVU has won both neutral court games. This will be Texas’ second home game before going on the road for two games. WVU reverses that, playing their first two league games on the road before playing two games at home. Bria Holmes is 12 points away from reaching the 1000 pt club. Nneka will be going for her seventh straight double double. She is also 3 rebounds from reaching 850 for her career.

WVU brings a trio of double digit scorers to the FEC Wednesday night, led by Bria Holmes (# 23, 6-1 Jr. G) who is currently the second leading scorer in league play at 23.0 ppg. Averee Fields (# 5, 6-1 Sr. F) adds 16.0 ppg while Tyara Warren (# 3, 5-9 Fr. G) comes of the bench to add 10.0 ppg. Fields (6-14, 42.9%) and Holmes (10-23, 43.5%) took 37 of WVU’s 62 FGs attempted in their first Big 12 game. They made 16 of the 23 FGs made by the Mountaineers. Five Mountaineers combined to take 19 treys but only Holmes (1-10) and Warren (2-4) connected. Even WVU’s FT% was poor as they only hit 55.0% (11-20). Warren got to the FT line five times with Holmes (2-4) and Fields (4-4) second in FT attempts. Fields (4-4) and Crystal Leary (# 32, 6-2 Sr. F; 2-2) were perfect from the FT line.

Holmes’ 7.0 rpg lead WVU in Big 12 play. Lanay Montgomery (# 15, 6-5 RS Soph. C) adds 6.0 rpg while Teana Muldrow (# 11, 6-1 RS Fr. F) and Linda Stepney (# 22, 5-7 Sr. G) each contributes 5.0 rpg. WVU had 7 assists in their first league game with Stepney ending up with three. The Mountaineers had 18 TOs vs OU. Muldrow (5), Stepney (4) and Holmes (4) combined for 13 of the 18. Holmes had 3 of WVU’s four blocks. The Mountaineers did grab 13 steals with Warren leading with four. Fields, Stepney, Holmes and Leary each had two steals.

Fields, Muldrow, Montgomery, Stepney and Holmes started their 13th game together. WVU used basically a seven player rotation with Dominique Simpson (# 0, 5-8 Fr. G) and Bre McDonald (# 20, 6-0 Soph. G/F) each seeing two minutes of action. Fields and Stepney played 40 minutes each with Holmes seeing 39 minutes of action. Muldrow and Montgomery saw only 13 minutes apiece while Warren and Leary saw 24 and 27 minutes, respectively.

Heading into conference game two against WVU, the Horns have three players in double digit scoring: Empress (13 ppg), Nneka (12 ppg) and Brady (10 ppg). Those three had 35 of the Horns’ 60 FGs attempted and 14 of the 24 FGs made. Empress was 6-14 for 42.9%. Nneka hit on 4-10 for 40.0% and Brady connected on 4-11 for 36.4%. Nekia (3-4, 75.0%) and Kelsey (3-5, 60.0%) have the best shooting percentages after one league game. Horns are hitting a dismal 1-7 for 14.3% from BTA. Brooke (1-2, 50.0%) connected on the only 3pter made by Texas vs Kansas. The good thing is that our posts 14 of 23 shots for 60.9%. Nneka got to the FT line seven times, making four (57.1%). Empress (1-1), Brady (2-2) and Imani (2-2) helped Texas finish at 11-16 (68.8%) from the FT line.

Nneka registered another double double in her first league game with 14 rebs. Kelsey and Imani each grabbed five rebs. Empress, Celina and Brady each got two assists with Nekia’s one adding up to the team’s seven total assists. The Horns had a low number of turnovers with 11. Texas’ frontline got five blocks with Nneka leading with three. Kelsey and Imani each had one. Horns had 12 steals vs Kansas with Krystle notching four and Brady three.

The starters for the first league game were: Nneka, Kelsey, Empress, Brady and Celina. Nneka and Brady were in for 30 minutes. Empress hit 29 minutes. Eleven players got in and nine played at least 12 minutes. Brianna only played two minutes before suffering a knee injury and missing the rest of the game. Ariel is getting closer to returning. No boot, no crutches, walking without favoring her injured ankle. Mid-January is looking pretty good, imo, for her return.Projected starters based on the last game:

[pre]
Texas WVU

Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Fields (6-1 Sr. F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Montgomery (6-5 RS Soph C)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Muldrow (6-1 RS Fr. F)
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Holmes (6-1 Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Jr. G) Stepney (5-7 Sr. G)

Holmes is the second leading scorer in the Big 12, both in all games and in Big 12 games. Fields is the other primary scorer for WVU. Montgomery, despite not getting any blocks vs OU, is still the leader in blocks for WVU and for the Big 12. Horns will need to stop Holmes and Fields as well as keep Montgomery from affecting too many of their shots. The good thing is that the Horns have shotblockers they work against in every practice. Holmes and Muldrow are the primary 3pt shooters for WVU, having taken 163 of the team’s 219 treys (74.4%). Both are hitting less than 28%. Warren has been the most accurate at 47.4% for the season (9-19). WVU will face a similar challenge from Texas’ main 3pt shooters—Brady and Brooke. They have combined for 66 of the team’s 138 (47.8%). Brooke is hitting 42.9% on 15 of 35 while Brady has hit 8 of 31 for 25.8%. WVU’s problem will be stopping the Texas’ posts, led by Nneka. In a numbers game, Montgomery is the only player with size that WVU uses as Kayla Montgomery (# 4), a 6-4Jr. F only averages just over 5 minutes a game and does not play in every game. Texas, meanwhile, can use Kelsey and Imani in rotation with Lilley and Sara, both 6-4, in reserve. For the Horns, it will be a three pronged defensive effort: blanket Holmes on the perimeter, stop Fields inside and pressure the 3pt shooters for WVU.

Where Texas may be hurting a bit is in the backcourt with Ariel out (presumably) and Brianna possibly out (depends on how she is recovering from her knee injury suffered on Saturday). That will leave Empress and Brady to provide height on the wings to counter Holmes and Muldrow.

Stats are Big 12 stats only.

Both teams scored 60 pts in their Big 12 openers but Texas won by 14 while WVU lost by 11. These are two of the worse 3pt shooting teams in the conference. WVU and Texas are tied for last in 3pt % at 28.3% in all games. They avoid the cellar in league play with WVU at 15.8% and Texas at 14.3%. KSU’s 11.1% is tenth. The difference is that WVU’s 19 3pters represent 30.3% of their shots in Big 12 play. Texas took 7 3s, 11.7% of their shots. Over the season WVU’s treys make up 26.4% of all shots while Texas treys represent 18.1% of FG attempted. The 3 is a much bigger part of WVU’s offense that it is for Texas so a low percentage does not impact Texas’ ability to score as much. Both teams came into conference play as among the top rebounding teams in the Big 12. Both remain among the top four rebounding teams in league play. That battle inside should be fierce although Texas will have more posts to throw into the mix. Defense is going to favor Texas. The Horns will need to impose their tempo on the game.

We didn't have a great game but pulled it out. Brooke is so impressive. Our good fortune to have her the next three years. She and Nekia are a great sparkplug off the bench. I wonder why Imani isn't getting much playing time, and when she gets in, we don't seem to run any plays for her. Last year, we lobbed it high to her a lot and it worked pretty well. I don't know why Kelsey is out on the perimeter so much. I'm not sure that's the best use of her height.

This year Brady Sanders seems to come up with the clutch play at just the right time...bucket, steal, drawing a foul. She's relentless. Love watching Brooke's one-handed floaters over players twice her height.

well, we found out why Bria Holmes is considered one of the best offensive players in the league. Still, Empress and Brady did a bang up job forcing her to work hard for her shots. Horns got to the FT line enough to offset their horrid shooting there and make 11 FTs to WVU's 12. Horns hit 55% while WVU made 85.7% from the FT line.

Kelsey's ability to hit from outside forced WVU's shot blocker, Montgomery outside, making room inside for Texas to go to Nneka. Nneka was the only Horn to score in double digits with 11 pts. Brooke had 9 pts. Empress, Kelsey and Nekia added 8 pts. Celina had 7, Brady 6 and Krystle 4.

WVU's Holmes was the game's top scorer with 22 pts.

Horns move to 2-0 while WVU drops to 0-2. Next up is ISU at Ames. ISU is 1-1 after dropping an 86-84 game to TCU in Fort Worth.

I like the fight of the Texas Women's Team.
They alway's find a way to win.
Men's Team please take a good look at the Passion and Fire, that these's ladies play with.

Everything I love about Kelsey Lang, I dislike about Imani. Is there not a more frustrating player at 6'7" who towers over her opponent but is unable to make an impact on the offensive end. She's unable to maintain her base and gets easily displaced by smaller defenders. Her hands are hit and miss as she bobbles and loses passes and rebounds. There should be no reason that a McDonald All-American should not be dominating on the offensive end. Granted her injuries have stunted her development.
Right now she is a situational player who makes her impact felt solely on the defensive end. She would be an All-American on the collegiate level if she had the strength, shooting touch, and hands of Kelsey Lang.

Bria Holmes was phenomenal. As good as she was, I thought Brady and Empress would make the wrong decision in providing help defense against lesser players. There were possessions where you have to ask, how do you lose track of Bria Holmes. They should have simply played lock down/face guarding defense on Bria.
It was an ugly win, but a win nevertheless.

Tough win for Texas. Ladies, you've got to hit those free throws!

11 for 20 from the charity stripe won't cut it when the games start getting tougher...and if they don't improve, other squads will know that if they can just keep it in single digits to the last media timeout, they can move to a Hack-a-Horn defense. Who cares if you are putting someone on the line for two shots if you realize they can only occasionally hit one of them...

What we really need is Atkins and Brittany Taylor back to rejuvenate our offense. You don't win championships scoring 60 points a game. Baylor, for instance, is scoring a ton and has a lot of weapons. I agree with the comments on Imani; she's frustrating. Some of this is due to recurring lack of conditioning due to injury. However in the past she's been very valuable and a good offensive contributor when healthy and on her game. She lacks killer instinct and will never be a Griner. But if she's at 100% in February, and we have Atkins and Taylor back, Texas can be a potent offensive machine.

Definitely glad we got the win. Team started out so well out of the gate; up double digits early, I thought we were gonna coast. Didn't think WVU was going to be that great as they had just lost at OU, who has struggled a lot this season.

But, team went cold. Didn't run our offense. Missing free throws didn't help. Settling for jump shots and not trying to get the ball inside is a bad combination.

Not sure if we were playing zone defense, but we sure seemed to leave their perimeter shooters wide open time and time again.

Several mental mistakes, as well.

But, we grinded out a win. Although I never felt comfortable, WVU only got within 4 points once I believe, and quickly answered with a couple of quick buckets.

Not having Taylor and Atkins hurts in several ways; but, we still got the win. I'll take it.
Bria Holmes was very impressive; I can see why she is so highly thought of.
