#12/13 Texas (17-3; 7-1) will host NR/NR WVU (14-5; 5-3) Monday night. Texas won their first meeting on Jan. 06 to run their series record to 12-6, including 13-5 in all Big 12 matchups. Horns have won the last four games against WVU. Both teams are looking to extend winning streaks. Texas is seeking their fourth straight win after their first conference loss to KSU. WVU is trying to get their third straight win after their loss to Baylor. Texas took the first game between the two on WVU’s home court. Horns are 4-0 at home in league games. WVU is 1-2 on the road. WVU’s only home loss in the Big 12 was to Texas. They would like to pin the first league home loss on Texas.
West Virginia University Mountaineers (14-5; 5-3)
Tynice Martin (#5, 5-11 RS Jr. G) brings in an 16.8 ppg average that is the best on the WVU team. Naomi Davenport (#0, 6-0 Sr. G/F) adds 14.8 ppg. Lucky Rudd (#15, 5-9 Jr. G) is third in scoring with an average of 10.4 ppg. Katrina Pardee (#22, 5-9 Sr. G), a Cedar Park HS grad, is fourth with an average of 8.7 ppg. Unfortunately for WVU, Pardee suffered an ankle injury in the OSU game on Jan. 09, 2019. She had started all previous 14 games before her injury. She has yet to return to the court. At 47.6%, Davenport is the only Mountaineer shooting over 38% from the field. Davenport (49-103) and Martin (46-127; 36.2%) have taken twice as many shots as Rudd, who is third in shot attempts with 53. Martin (20-53; 37.7%), Davenport (11-28; 39.3%) and Rudd (9-28; 32.1%) combine to make 36.7% of the treys they put up. Madisen Smith (#30, 5-5 Fr. PG) is 5 of 27 (18.5%). WVU is one of three teams that are making at least 70% of their FTs. Their top three FT shooters are Rudd (36-42; 85.7%), Martin (22-28; 78.6%) and Smith (18-24; 75%). Kari Niblack (#14, 6-1 Fr. F) also gets to the FT line often but is not as effective (19-32; 59.4%).
Davenport is third in the league in rebounding at 8.4 rpg. Niblack (6.1 rpg), Martin (5.3 rpg) is second. Theresa Ekhelar (#34, 6-6 Sr. C) adds 3.9 rpg while Rudd contributes 3.8 rpg. Smith has 32 assists (4.0 apg) while Martin (16 assists; 2.0 apg) and Davenport (15 assists; 1.9 apg) combine to nearly match her output. Davenport (30 TOs; 3.8 TOPG) and Smith (27 TOs; 3.4 TOPG) are the top two in turning the ball over. Smith (12 steals), Rudd (11 steals), Martin (9 steals), Davenport (9 steals) and Niblack (8 steals) all are getting at least one steal a game. Niblack (12 blocks) and Ekhelar (9 blocks) combine for 21 of the team’s 26 blocks.
Martin, Davenport, Smith and Ekhelar have started all eight league games. Rudd has started the last five games after Pardee was injured in game three. Four of the starters average over 30 minutes: Martin (39.0 mpg), Davenport (36.3 mpg), Rudd (32.8 mpg) and Smith (30.4 mpg). Fifth starter Ekhelar has averaged 17.9 mpg. Niblack at 21.8 mpg is the sixth WVU player to average double digit minutes. Nia Staples (#4, 5-9 Soph. G) has played in seven games while Jala Jordan (#12, 6-2 Fr. F) has gotten into four games. Without Pardee, the Mountaineers have eight players in the rotation with six playing significant minutes and Staples getting a few minutes in most games.
Lucky Rudd shining in Pardee’s absence
Texas Longhorns (17-3; 7-1)
Horns bring three players averaging in double figures to the rematch with WVU. Sug is the leading scorer with an average of 15.6 ppg. Second is Danni at 11.8 ppg. Joyner is the third leading scorer with her average of 11.0 ppg. Destiny (9.3 ppg) and Jatarie (8.5 ppg) are other scoring options for Texas. Those five are the top five in shots attempted with Sug (46-86; 53.5%) and Joyner (36-81; 44.4%) as the top shooters. Sug’s 53.5% is the best FG% on the team. Five others are making over 40% of their shots, bracketed by Charli (11-23; 47.8%) and Danni (30-70; 42.9%). Horns have three players who are the primary 3pt shooters. Danni has taken and made the most 3pters (18-39) and has the best shooting percentage from BTA (46.2%).Destiny is second in 3pters made and taken (10-26; 38.5%) while Sug has the second best 3pt shooting percentage (40%) on 6 of 15 treys. Six Horns have reached double digit FT attempts. Five of the six are making at least 72% of their FTs. Sug has gone to the FT line the most (27-34; 79.4%). Both Danni (16-20; 80%) and Jatarie (10-12; 83.3%) have the best FT%. Joyner continues to struggle from the FT line (14-29; 48.3%) although she did make 3 of 5 against Tech.
The top three rebounders are Joyner (7.4 rpg), Sug (5.4 rpg) and Jatarie (5.0 rpg). Four others average between 4.4 rpg (Danni) and 3.5 rpg (Destiny). Sug (42 assists, 5.3 apg) leads Danni (15 assists, 1.9 apg) and Joyner (11 assists, 1.4 apg) in distributing the ball to teammates. Joyner (31 TOs, 3.9 TOPG) and Sug (28 TOs, 3.5 TOPG) lead a group of six with double digit TOs. Charli’s six blocks are tops on the team with Joyner second with four blocks. Jatarie has three blocks. That trio has 13 of the team’s 15 blocks. Joyner has eleven steals while Jada has nine and Sug and Danni each has swiped away eight.
The lineup of Sug, Danni, Joyner, Jatarie and Jada has started the last three games. Danni (36.4 mpg) and Sug (34.5 mpg) continue to play the most minutes per game. Four of the remaining eight average in the 20s mpg while three others are in the teens.
The big question is whether Audrey will be able to play against WVU. If she is in concussion protocol, I would think it would be unlikely. That would leave nine active players for the Monday rematch with WVU.
LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.
In the first game, WVU went small early with Ekhelar only playing 14 minutes without being in foul trouble. Unless they put 6-2 Fr. F Jordan in, Niblack (6-1) and Davenport (6-0) are the only other WVU players at least six feet tall. Our posts were dominant on the boards with Joyner and Olamide each grabbing nine rebounds and Jatarie adding seven. Charli sat out the first game against WVU. One has to wonder if she will get a chance to play in this one as she has gained more experience since then.
WVU couldn’t handle Sug in the first game while Texas had the same problem with Davenport. Those two continue to be strong offensively for their respective teams. Horns used a player to face guard Martin and limit her touches and shots. Horns will probably start off the same way to see if WVU has a counter to that defense.
STATS COMPARISON—Big 12 stats only.
Two of the top three defensive teams will clash in Austin Monday. Both teams are also effective in stopping the 3pt shot as WVU is second in that category and Texas fourth. Texas is the top 3pt shooting team by percentage. WVU doesn’t allow many open looks from BTA. Both prefer a fast tempo. WVU is more reliant on TOs to fuel their fast break while Texas uses their rebounding to run the floor.
Game time will be at 7 PM on Monday, Jan. 28. The game will be televised on FS1. 105.3 FM will carry the radio broadcast. The game will be online at Fox Sports Go app.

Lucky Rudd shining in Pardee’s absence
As the West Virginia women’s basketball team continues to nurse injuries, it has left the the Mountaineers searching for answers….Pardee was key to how WVU played the past four years and it culminated in her averaging 31.8 minutes court time per game this season, but, without her, it has forced the Mountaineers to find new players to fill those minutes.
Although West Virginia suffered an embarrassing defeat to Baylor, Carey might have found that new player in junior guard Lucky Rudd.
