Texas vs. UTSA Basketball Game

Nice win for the Horns and another strong outing, and dbl-dbl, for Imani. Also nice to see the team shoot 78% from the FT line. We doubled up UTSA on the boards in the first-half, but was a little surprised to see them get close to us by games end. We won the rebounding battle 45-40, a closer margin than I expected given our big size advantage. And they pulled down almost triple the number of offensive boards as we did, leading that category 14-5. Looks like Nneka had a bit of an off-night offensively, going 1-7, but she was a perfect 4-4 at the line. Overall have to be happy with the 20 pt win, but still some work to do.

I happened to be in Austin this week so took in the women's volleyball and basketball games.

The Horns came out on fire the first ten minutes of the game. Nneka got into some early foul trouble. Krystle can handle the ball and can get herself to the basket to score. She needs to work on distributing the ball since she only had one assist. Brady brought much-needed energy to the team. Chassidy was hitting most of her open shots. Imani didn't start but did great when she was in the game. She didn't seem to be in game shape so not sure if she is coming back from an injury. Imani contributed greatly with her shooting, rebounding, and shot blocking.

I still think this might be a long season. That fifth place prediction in the Big XII seems about right. Games with Stanford and Tennessee will give a better gauge of where this team stands.

I enjoyed the game Sunday and the replay later that evening on the LHN.

Really happy to see Brady get a start. She brings a passion and exuberance for the game that seems to fire up the whole team. It looks like Chas is really going to enjoy her last season. The whole team just seems to be much more comfortable together and running the schemes this year.

Not many assists last night but the second half, when things got helter skelter, kinda contributed to that. Horns had six assists on 13 FGs in the first half before ending up with 7 assists on 20 made FGs. Empress with two assists led the team. UTSA took 30 treys out of 66 FG attempts. They made two. Lots of long rebounds there which usually go to the team shooting. Still, I kinda wish the team had rebounded better. Imani did show improvement over last season in her rebounding, being more aggressive in her rebounding. Hope she continues that. I really liked her ability to hit the hook as well as to turn and bank the shot off the glass. Those shots should be unblockable pretty much all the time. Horns only shot 40% from the field but hit 45.5% from BTA, quite an improvement over last season. Nice start to the season from BTA. It helped that two other guards besides Chas hit a 3. Not forgetting either that Imani nailed one and that Kelsey had one rim out.

While the Horns had absolutely no trouble with the 10 second rule as they pushed the ball almost every time, the new defending rules are something else. Nneka especially had trouble, fouling out from this game as she did in the exhibition game. She’s quick enough that she should be able to guard without bodying up or putting hands on the opponent. She is a physical player and is having to learn to play without the bumping and hands allowed before the change.

Only Lilley, Nekia and Brianna did not play. I think Coach Aston said that Lilley was sick Saturday (have loaner hearing aids on and didn’t hear some of the comments in the post game session). Hopefully, Nekia and Brianna will be available for Stanford.

Krystle and Celina are different types of PGs. Krystle is more offensive minded while Celina is more pass first. Celina has shown more aggressiveness in looking for her shot this game. Saw Empress and Ashley also at the point for a few minutes. At least, they were bringing the ball up and setting up the play. Good to see Ashley back on the floor after her ACL injury last season.

To me, the team just seemed more comfortable running the offense and defense. Better awareness of when and how to run the schemes, less thinking about what to do. It’s just the first game so I expect continued improvement in their shooting, rebounding, and passing. Speaking of which, several were committed trying to get a pass inside to the post, just out of reach or deflected off a Texas player by the opponent. That should continue to get better as well.

Looking forward to Wednesday’s game. Looks like it will be heavy coat time with that cold front coming in.

Loved that hook shot from Imani!

Kelsey looks to have good form on the three she attempted. Having a big that can hit from outside is a big asset that will open up the middle.

Brady did show a lot of energy that I hope is contagious for the rest of the team.

I liked the fact that Krystle is offensive-minded. I think it's important to have point guard that can score as well as run the team (think Jamie Carey).
