Texas is coming off a 91-73 win over SMU while UNLV lost in OT to South Florida, 59-54 in their respective opening day games in the Travelers Classic. This moves Texas to 6-3 and drops UNLV to 5-4 for the season.
In the first eight games, UNLV has started the same five players: Mia Bell (# 30, 5-6 Soph. G); Sanrine Nzeukou (# 3, Jr. 6-2 F/C); Lenita Sanford (# 51, 6-3 F); Jamie Smith (# 11, 6-0 Jr. F) and Kelli Thompson (# 45, 6-0 Soph. G). India Chaney (# 32, 5-10 Sr. G); Erica Helms (# 15, 5-7 Sr. G) and Markiell Styles (# 5, 6-3 Jr. C) are averaging double digit minutes while playing in the first eight games. Three others have played in 7 or 8 games but no more than 8.3 minutes per game: Ta’Nitra Byrd (# 32, 6-0 Fr. F); Rmanii Haynes (# 22, 5-6 Fr. G) and Tia Morrison (# 31, 6-2 Jr. C). The four others on the roster have played in at least 2 games.
With the return of Kristen, the Horns now have 11 players in the rotation. In nine games, ten players are averaging at least 10 minutes a game in games they played. Kristen eased back in with 8 minutes against SMU. Tiffany has played in four games; Sarah in 7 and Shanice in 8.
Through eight games, UNLV has one player scoring in double figures: Thompson who is averaging 15.3 ppg. Smith (9.1 ppg) and Sanford (8.5 ppg) are the next two top scorers for the Lady Rebels. Thompson leads UNLV in FGs made & attempted (37-104, 35.6%); 3FGs made, attempted & % (20-58, 34.5%); and FTs made & attempted (28-35, 80.0%). She has taken 22% of the team FGs and 41% of the 3s. Among the top 8 players, Nzeukou has the best FG% (14-27, 51.9%). Smith (6-24, 25.0%) and Chaney (6-23, 26.1%) are the only other Lady Rebels that have attempted more than 14 3pters. Smith has a better FT percentage (27-31, 87.1%) and gets to the FT line almost as much as Thompson. Sanford is also another a Lady Rebel you do not want on the FT line (19-22, 86.4%). Smith is the top rebounder (9.3 rpg) while Sanford (7.0 rpg), Nzekou (5.4 rpg) and Styles (4.9 rpg) are solid on the boards. Bell is the player that finds the open shooter as she has 33 assists while Smith ranks second with 14 assists. Sanford leads with 16 blocks. No one else has more than 5. Thompson, Smith, and Sanford all have 11 steals each to top UNLV in this category.
Stats for the Horns are updated through the SMU game, thanks to texassports.com having updaed their data.
Horns have five players averaging double digit scoring. Kat (16.7 ppg) leads the group which includes Ashleigh (15.9 ppg), Chassidy (15.3 ppg), Yvonne (10.8 ppg) and Chelsea (10.1 ppg). Kat (101 FGA) and Ashleigh (124 FGA) each have over 100 FGs attempted. Four others have between 89 and 60 FGA. Three are making over 50% of their FGs, six are in 40+% range, and two are hitting just over 35%. The team as a whole is averaging 44.7% from the field. Kat is the top 3pt threat (20-55, 36.4%) but four others have taken at least 22 3s. The Horns have 3 players that have gotten to the FT line at least 40 times. Four others have attempted at least 23 FTs. Kat’s 90.5% leads the team by a wide margin. Sarah’s 83.3% is second. Four others are hitting between 71 and 79%. Three Horns are struggling as they are hitting in low to mid 40% from the FT line. Ashley (9.7 rpg) and Kat (8.1 rpg) lead the Horns on the boards. Three others supply at least 5 rpg. Ashley has 35 blocks while no other Horn has more than 4. Ashleigh’s 30 steals lead five other Horns who have at least 12 steals.
Projected Starting Lineups:
[pre]
Texas UNLV
Kat (6-2) Sanford (6-3)
Ashley (6-4) Nzeukou (6-2)
Ashleigh (5-8) Bell (5-6)
Chassidy (5-10) Thompson (6-0)
Yvonne (5-7) Smith (6-0)

Horns will be looking to shut down Thompson who has been the main scorer for the Lady Rebels through eight games. Over half her shots before the South Florida game were 3pters. Whoever is on will need to be aware of this. Her ability to get to the FT line does seem to indicate that she can drive to the basket and draw fouls. She, Smith, and Sanford will hurt the Horns if they get to the FT line. Nzeukou is their best shooter inside the arc but is only taking about 4 shots a game. UNLV will use basically an eight player rotation that will get the most minutes. Horns will present UNLV with a problem in trying to shut down so many 3pt shooters. Ashley and Anne Marie, while not big scorers, have been effective inside when they get the chance.

UNLV is taking almost as many shots as the Horns. They just have not made as many. 30% of their FGs are 3s, same as Texas’. This should be a matter of which team can get open looks from BTA and prevent the other from doing the same. The Horns ability to rebound will be tested by a team that, overall, is taller than Texas, and rebounds as well. Can the Horns force TOs and get defensive rebounds to fuel their fast break?
Game time is at 9:30 pm due to the time zone difference. Glad I’m on vacation and can stay up late.
