Tuesday, Nov. 17, the Texas Longhorns and the Connecticut Huskies will square off for the fifth time. UConn is 4-0 in this series with the last game between the two knocking Texas out of the 2008 NCAA playoffs in the second round, 89-55. That game was played in the Huskies backyard, Bridgeport. This one will take place just down the road from the Texas campus in San Antonio. Four Horns are back for the rematch while five UConn players return. Earnie and Brit started in that game with Kat and Kristen also seeing action. For UConn, Maya Moore (#23, 6-0 Jr. F) got a double double in her second NCAA game. Tina Charles(#31, 6-4 Sr. C) notched 10 pts. while Kaili McLaren (#41, 6-2 Sr. F) started and Jacquie Fernandes( #13, 5-9 Sr. G) and Meghan Gardler (@22, Sr. F) played. Lorin Dixon(#30, 5-4 Jr. G) is a junior, same as Moore but does not show up on the box score. For Texas, Erika, now a senior, did not play due to an injury earlier in the season. Except for Kat, Maya and Lorin, everyone that played in that game is a senior.

UConn is returning four starters from an undefeated national championship team. Texas returns three starters from a team that went one and out in the NCAAs. Both teams will be breaking in new PGs. Both will come into the game at 1-0 after Texas defeated UT-San Antonio 71-60 Friday and UConn ran over Northeastern of the Colonial Athletic Association 105-35 on Saturday.

UConn’s Renee Montgomery had this to say about Texas prior to that March 25, 2008 game: “We know they’re very athletic. They like to push the ball, and they’re very aggressive.“ That hasn’t changed. If anything, this Longhorn team two years later does that more and better. The Huskies also like to run so this game could come down to who controls the boards and and forces TOs. With UConn’s Dixon likely out due to hamstring problems, both teams will have ten players to work with. No player foe either team played less than 13 minutes. For UConn, post McLaren is recovering from a right twisted ankle suffered in Friday’s practice and did not play Saturday although she is projected to be able to play Tuesday.

When ESPN listed the top five players at each position, UConn landed three players among those fifteen: Moore at SF (she actually plays inside for UConn), Charles at C, and Hayes at SG. No Texas player made the cutoff. There is no question that Charles is one of the premier post players in the nation and that Moore is just about a lock to repeat as NPOY. Heather Buck (#21, 6-3 RS Fr. C/F) and McLaren provide depth inside. Texas will counter with Ashley and Cokie, a pair of 6-4 posts. Both are good shot blockers who will need to play smart and stay out of foul trouble. Ashley has improved offensively over the summer, most noticeably in her FT shooting.

On paper, this game belongs to UConn. On the court, Texas has a chance to knock off the Huskies. Perhaps not much of one, but they do have a chance. If they can hit their shots and play defense as they are capable of, they will push UConn and could be in possible to upset the Huskies. Bench players for both will be used often and for extended minutes. The benches are experienced and ready to contribute. UConn will have a height advantage in the backcourt. In the front court, they are evenly matched up height wise.

Speed and quickness should be evident on both sides. Composure will be important for the Horns. If they can maintain it, this should be an excellent game. If not, UConn will blow out the Horns. Both teams will be looking to use their defense to create TOs to set up fast break points. Look for lots of tipped balls and physical play inside. If Texas can rebound and Ashley and Cokie keep out of foul trouble, the Horns could pull off the upset.

I’m expecting a close game. The Horns are deeper and healthier than two years ago. Both teams come in very experienced with some outstanding freshmen. Texas has something to prove while UConn is looking to extend their unbeaten string.Based on the first game starters, projected starters for Tuesday game are:

[pre] Texas UConn

PG Ashleigh (5-8) Caroline Doty(#5, 5-10 Soph. G)
SG Brittainey (6-0) Tiffany Hayes(#3, 5-10 Soph. G)
SF Kat(6-2) Kalana Greene (#32, 5-10 Sr. G)
PF Earnie(6-1) Moore
C Ashley(6-4) Charles

Texas Tech and Tennessee will kickoff the double header at 6pm. That game is on ESPNU.

Everyone have a safe trip and enjoy San Antonio.

I hope this is not an embarrassing blow-out like last time...

I fear it will not be pretty, I felt like we didn't play well on Friday, and this team is not really hitting on all cylinders yet...

I'm not worried about whether they get embarrassed or not. I want them to learn from this game, win or lose. It's the second game of the season and place to put the leasons to use are in conference play and the NCAAs. Our young posts are going against one of the two best college posts in the game. It's a good measuring stick. I want the team to play hard, play under control, and not give up. A win would be awesome but a loss this early is not too much to be concerned about.

i agree with babhorn...i'm not worried about being embarrassed against uconn as that is what many probably expect to happen. that said i would like the team to play tough and learn from this game, and if we pull off the upset, all the better. barring injuries i think this team is going to get better and better as the season progresses. i would much rather see the horns suffer a few bumps early on and be at their best down the stretch, as opposed to what happened last year. now let's go beat the huskies!

I am worried about being embarrassed. It is not what you want young recruits to see who are considering coming to UT.

I want the Longhorns to win...I always want them to win but I just keep remembering when they beat TN last year. They went AWOL the rest of the season. The polls put them at #4 and by the end of the season we had dropped out of the polls. So a good ole' fashion spanking this early in the season might do them more good than harm. I'm hoping for a 10-15 point spread but like I mentioned before after Friday it might be more like a 20-30 point spread.

My advice - DON'T PLAY SCARED! Go out there and play Longhorn ball. I strongly dislike when a team plays scared and intimidated. It drives me CRAZY!!!

But the Horns have some players too. Moore is the only one I think we don't have an answer for. But that's why it's a team game and not a one on one game. Heck, I just can't wait for this game to get underway.Texas Starters:-stats from their bios.Ashley: “Saw action in 32 games this season, including seven starts ... totaled 60 blocks, good for second in UT's freshman record book, passing teammate Ashley Lindsey's freshman mark of 54 ... was the top shot-blocker among Big 12 freshmen throughout the year and finished the regular season ranked sixth overall.”

Kat
: "connected on a team-leading 50 3-pointers and pulled down a team-high 218 rebounds (6.6 rpg)"

Brit:
"Currently ranks fourth in UT's record book with 204 career assists. Started in 30 of 33 games played ... led the team in scoring (13.4 ppg)"

Earnie:
"Started in 25 of 32 games played"

Ashleigh:
"Appeared in all 33 games and started the last 14 contests for the Longhorns, finished Big 12 play as the league's second-leading freshman scorer (8.3 ppg) and third-leading freshman rebounder (3.4 rpg) ... also ranked second among league rookies in steals (1.5 spg) and third in assists (1.63 apg)"

You think we have an answer for Charles? I am afraid that Reed will get a taste of big-time players like Griner got at Tennessee. We will not be able to contain Charles.

Hard to watch, but we sort of expected this. UConn is that good.

That said - not meant as sour grapes - but could the idiots over at ESPN actually talk about the game and what is happening on the floor rather than waxing and waning over the life and loves of Maya Moore???

I thought they played better than I expected. They played with lots of intensity and didn't play scared. I wish more shots had dropped, but I was not disappointed with their effort.

Looking at the boxscore, I am pleased to see only 15 turnovers (UConn had 17) is very encouraging. To play a team with such high intensity & take care of the ball pretty well is commendable, IMHO. Also 12 assists is not bad either. It shows they ran their plays and played team ball. I sure wish more shots would have fallen. Because I saw a team that plyed very hard to the end. There were lots of negatives from the game but Lso enough positives to build on. Go Horns!

I thought that Reed had some nice moves but didn't finish with a made shot. I see a lot of potential with her. I think that once she gains a comfort zone that we are going to see good things from her.

Two of our starting guards went a combined 3 for 21. That just isn't going to get the job done.

Charles single outscored Williams, Reed and Gayle combined...and she only had 15 points. Goodness gracious we need some post scoring.
