After starting off 0-2, Texas has won three of the last five to get to 3-4 in conference play. Tech started off 2-0 and has lost their next five since to end up at 2-5. Texas has won the last five games, including some nailbiters. The last Tech win was at Tech, 65-62 on Jan. 10, 2009. Tech is looking to stop the bleeding while Texas seeks to even their conference record.
Kierra Mallard (#20, 6-3 Sr. F/C), Tech’s leading scorer, rebounder and best 3pt shooter, sat out the loss to Kansas on Wednesday due to an undisclosed injury. There is no no timetable for a return to action. With Mallard’s team leading 11.7 ppg in question, Christine Hyde (#5, 5-10 Jr. G) at 9.0 ppg and Monique Smalls (#23. 5-6 Jr. G) at 8.9 ppg are the leading scorers for the Lady Raiders. Casey Morris (#15, 5-9 Jr. G; 7.8 ppg) and Chynna Brown (#00, 5-8 Jr. G; 7.4 ppg) are other top scorers for Tech. Mallard’s 28-91 (30.8%) lead the team in FGs attempted and made. Four other Lady Raiders have taken at least 50 FG attempts: Hyde (25-59, 42.4%); Brown (22-59, 37.3%); Morris (16-57, 28.1%) and Smalls (22-55, 40.0%). Mallard has the most 3pters made and attempted by a Lady Raider: 8-23 (34.8%). Mary Bokenkamp (#24, 5-9 Jr. G) has hit 4 of 7 (57.1%) while Kelsi Baker (#41, 6-0 Soph. F) has connected on 6 of 12 3pters (50.0%). Jordan Barncastle (#1, 6-2 Sr. F; 6-16, 37.5%) is the only other Lady Raider connecting on least 30% of her 3pt attempts. Smalls has been the most effective at getting to the FT line but has had trouble converting, making 16 of 30 for 53.3%. Morris (15-18, 83.3%) and Baker (6-8, 75.0%) are the only Lady Raiders hitting over 56% of their FTs.
Mallard leads Tech in rebounding at 7.7 rpg. Brown’s 4.3 rpg is second on the team. Smalls with 29 assists and Morris with 18 are the two Tech players with double digit assists. Mallard has 15 blocks while Baker with 3 is second. Three Lady Raiders have reached double figures in steals with Smalls leading the way with 13. Mallard (12) and Morris (11) rank second and third, respectively, in steals.
Until the last game when Mallard had to miss due to injury, the Lady Raiders had started the same five in all of the conference games: Mallard, Baker, Hyde, Morris and Smalls. Shauntal Nobles (#33, 6-3 Soph. F/C) started Wednesday against Kansas. Nobles, Bokenkamp, Barncastle and Brown have played in all seven Big 12 games to date. Barncastle is the only averaging less than 10 minutes per game. Averaging over 30 mpg are: Smalls (36.0 mpg), Morris (30.9 mpg) and Mallard (30.0 mpg). Amber Battle (#12, 5-9 Fr. G) has gotten into six conference games for an average of 3 mpg. Ebony Walker (#42, 6-2 Soph. F) is averaging 6.3 minutes in the four games she has played in. Haley Schneider (#31, 6-5 Soph. C) has yet to get into a conference game and has played in only 9 games this season.
Texas has two players scoring in double figures: Chassidy at 16.3 ppg and Yvonne at 10.3 ppg. Ashleigh is just off double figures at 9.9 ppg. The two starting posts Cokie (7.8 ppg) and Ashley (7.4 ppg). Chelsea is the first guard off the bench and averages 7.0 ppg. Chassidy is the first Horn to reach 100 FGs attempted in Big 12, hitting 39 of 102 (38.2%). Ashleigh (25-79, 31.8%) and Yvonne (25-60, 41.7%) are the next two in shots made and attempted. Ashley’s 43.4% (23-53%) leads the team in shooting percentage. Ro is perfect from the field but has only taken two shots, one a 3pter. Chassidy is the top 3pt shooter for Texas at 36.1% (13-36). Chelsea’s 34.8% (8-23) is second in treys made, attempted and percentage. Three Horns have gotten to the FT line at least 20 times in conference play. Chassidy leads the way with 23 of 26 (88.5%). Yvonne (18-25, 72.0%) and Ashleigh (14-20, 70.0%) are second and third. Anne Marie (4-5, 80.0%) is the only other Horn who has made at least 80% of her FTs.Three posts and one guard lead Texas in rebounding: Ashley (6.4 rpg), Cokie (6.2 rpg), Nneka (5.9 rpg) and Chassidy (5.7 rpg). Yvonne (47) and Ashleigh (17) lead the team in assists. With 16 blocks, Ashley is the only Horn who has reached double figures in that category. Three Horns have reached double digits in steals: Yvonne (16), Ashleigh 14) and Ashley (10).
Texas has played 11 players in conference games. A core of eight have played in every game they were available for. Seven have played in all seven games while Cokie missed two games due to injury. Those core eight are averaging at least 13 mpg with three averaging over 30 minutes: Chassidy (33.3 mpg), Yvonne (31.0 mpg) and Ashleigh (31.3 mpg). Kayla, Tiffany and Ronisha add depth behind those eight.
Projected starting lineup is based on the last game. Mallard did not make the trip to Kansas due to an injury. If she is able to play, she will replace Nobles in the lineup for Tech.

Texas Tx Tech
Ashley (6-4) Nobles (6-3)
Cokie (6-4) Baker (6-0)
Yvonne (5-7) Smalls (5-6)
Ashleigh (5-8) Morris (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Hyde (5-10) [/pre]
Mallard is a big part of Tech’s offense. Like a lot of Big 12 posts, she is capable of hitting the trey. Against Kansas, with Mallard out, they struggled to score, hitting only 29.7% of their FGs and going 0-7 from BTA. KU’s posts took advantage of Mallard’s absence, making 22 of 35 FGs for 43 pts. Kansas made 29 of 61 FGs and scored 61 pts. Tech is a different team with Mallard, forcing opposing posts to guard her out to the 3pt line. Ashley and Cokie are capable of doing that. Smalls is a quick and fast PG that the Horns will need to slow down and keep from making layups in transition. Even with Mallard, Tech will need to keep the Texas posts from dominating the boards and scoring inside. In addition, they will be looking to guard the 3pt line and keep the Horn guards from penetrating.

Tech is on a downward slide that they would love to stop by beating Texas. If Mallard is able to play, that will help their cause. Without her, Tech will be pressed to keep Texas from penetrating and either finishing or dishing for a basket. Texas wants to make it six wins in a row over Tech. Tech is a little more deliberate than Texas. Texas will set up in the half court but will run as much as possible. Tech is slightly more reliant on the 3 than Texas although both are taking around 14 (Texas) and 16 (Tech) 3s a game. Texas is running into a squad in Tech that is struggling from the line even more than the Horns are. Tech is hitting less than 60% of their FTs while Texas is making 67%. Tech does take care of the ball better, forcing two more TOs a game than they commit. Texas barely does better than break even in this category at a plus 0.4 TO margin. Texas does have a stronger defensive presence inside. Ashley is the main shotblocker for the Horns but she has good support from Cokie, Anne Marie and Nneka. Both teams use 8-9 players frequently with others available as matchups dictate. Without Mallard, Tech has three post players that are regularly rotated. One is Baker, a 6-0 F. Walker, a 6-2 Soph. F, has gotten limited minutes in four games. Available for Tech is 6-5 Soph. C Schneider. Horns will have an advantage inside as long as their posts stay out of foul trouble.
Game time is 2:00 pm on Saturday. KVET 1300 AM will carry the game on radio. There is no TV for this game.
