The Horns take on the Islanders of Texas A & M—Corpus Christi this Thursday. The Islanders are 1-1, losing to the then #12 Vanderbilt Commodores by an 85-51 score to start the season. They won their second game, their home opener against Texas Southern, by a margin of 56-51. A&M—CC has had their top post player, 6-0 Elisa Beagle, a first team SLC selection, miss those first two games with a foot injury. At this time, there has been no announcement about her availability for the Texas game.

In her absence, 5-6 G Jade Davis and 6-1 F Myeisha Myles have taken up the scoring at 10.0 and 12.5 ppg respectively. Myles and 5-10 F Deziree Green lead the Lslanders with 8 rpg each. Davis and 5-6 G Shaye Montgomery are the top 3pt threats with each having hit 4-11 3s. Green, Montgomery, 6-2 C Louvinia Robinson and 6-1 F Adrienne Scott have started both games for A&M-CC while Davis and 5-6 G Nyesha Adams have each started one. Of the 12 players that have played for the Islanders, 8 are averaging double digit minutes with both Green and Montgomery averaging over 32 minutes a game.

The Islanders are averaging 53.5 ppg while giving up 68.0 ppg. They are hitting 33.3% of their FGs while their opponents have connected on 43.0 %. They are making 30% of 3s while giving 41.9% to opponents. They are doing well at the line, hitting 78.8% while getting 3.5 more FTAs per game.

The Horns are undefeated (3-0) going into this game. All 11 players are averaging double digit minutes. They are outscoring opponents 84.7-53.3. Their shooting is very good this early, 48.7% on FGs and 38.1% on 3s. They are holding opponents to 34.9% on FGs and 28.2% on 3s. They are out rebounding opponents by 12.7 a game and forcing 7.7 more TOs a game than they commit.

Brittainey (15.7 ppg), Kat (14.0 ppg) and Erika (12.3 ppg) lead the scoring for the Horns. Of the 42 3s attempted by the Horns, Erika (5-13) and Kat (4-11) have taken the most. Erika’s 38.5% and Kat’s 36.4% from BTA are solid but Brit at 42.9% (3-7) and Earnie at 75% (3-4) also are capable of hitting the 3. Kat is the leading rebounder at 6.3 rpg while Earnie is second at 5.7 rpg. Kristen (6.0 ppg & 5.3 rpg) and Aubry (2.0 ppg & 4.7 rpg) provide solid bench support. Our three freshmen have been solid contributors on offense: AG with 5.5 ppg; Ashleigh with 7.0 ppg and Yvonne at 8.0 ppg. The numbers don’t do their defensive and offensive contributions justice.

I don’t think the Islanders have the depth or talent to stay with the Horns. The Horns should roll over A&M—CC easily with all 11 players getting another dose of double digit minutes. It will be a chance for the coaches to see how different combinations work on both ends.

Without Beagle, the Islanders have been dependent on two players to score. Montgomery at 8 ppg is the third highest scorer on their team. They have will have trouble with the Horns’ tall and physical inside players and won’t be able to stay with the Horns’ backcourt all game. The rotations that the Texas staff can bring in waves will wear out the Islanders. Our freshmen should get a lot of playing time as should the rest of the bench. Erika and Kat should be able to find room to launch 3s when the ball is not going inside.

Some more info on the Islanders' injury situation. The article is from last Sunday, 11-16-08.

Looks like Beagle may be out for the year while combo guard and starter Nyesha Adams got hurt against Vanderbilt.
