Tenn comes to Austin sporting an 8-1 record. They have won their last two games
after losing to Georgetown 58-69. Texas is at 5-2 after winning their game on
Wednesday over UTPA, 112-59. Prior to that game, the Horns had dropped
two straight, to Stanford (78-93) and to Michigan State (57-71). Since she
arrived at Texas, Coach G is 1-2 versus the Lady Vols, losing both away
games and winning the one in Austin. For Tenn, this is the start of a two
game Texas road trip as they will take on Baylor Tuesday.
The Lady Vols have had eight players start in their nine games. Two,
Shekinna Stricklen (# 40, 6-2 Jr. G/F) and Glory Johnson (# 25, 6-3 Jr. F)
have started all nine games. Angie Bjorklund (# 5, 6-0 Sr. G/F) and Meighan
Simmons (# 10, 5-9 Fr. G) have started eight of the nine with Simmons
starting the last eight. There are 13 players on the roster although only 11
have been available through this week. Lauren Avant (# 12, 5-9 Fr. G)
suffered an injury in the first game of the season but could play Sunday.
Alyssia Brewer (# 33, 6-3 Jr. F) had Achilles tendon surgery on Sept. 10
and was expected to return this season but has not played yet. Of the 11
others, seven have played in all nine games while Kelley Cain (# 52, 6-6
RS Jr. C) has played in eight games. Vicki Baugh (# 21, 6-4 RS Jr. F) has
played in five games, playing in the first one then sitting out sitting the
next four before playing in the last four as she recovers from a torn ACL
on Feb. 24, 2009 and a partial medial meniscectomy performed in early
January of 2010. In their last game, Alicia Manning (# 15, 6-1 Jr. F)
joined Stricklen, Johnson, Simmons, and Bjorklund in the starting lineup.
Tenn is led in scoring by Simmons (16.8 ppg), Stricklen (11.2 ppg) and
Bjorklund (10.8 ppg). Johnson is their primary rebounder (10.2 rgp) and
just misses averaging a double double with 9.0 ppg. Stricklen adds support
on the boards with an average of 6.0 rpg. Simmons (20-56, 35.7%),
Bjorklund (23-62, 37.1%), Stricklen (6-19, 31.6%) and Taber Spani (# 13,
6-1 Soph. G) (7-20, 35.0%) are the primary threats from BTA for the Lady
Vols. Kamiko Williams (# 4, 5-11 Soph. G) (4-8, 50.0%) and Briana Bass
(# 1, 5-2 Fr. G) (3-7, 42.9%) have the best percentages from BTA. Simmons
has taken 21% of Tenn’s total FG attempts (119 of 574). The other seven
that have played in at least eight games have between 34 and 88 attempts.
Neither of the two that get to the FT line the most, Simmons (19-33, 57.6%)
and Johnson (25-48, 52.1%) have been very effective there. Bjorklund
(10-12, 83.3%) and Williams (12-15, 80.0%) are the ones opponents don’t
want to see on the line. The Lady Vols move the ball well as three players
have between 20 and 25 assists. Three others have at least 10. Cain leads
the team with 12 blocks. Makes one wonder what she could do if healthy
as she has done this averaging just under 16 mpg. Three others have six
blocks each. Every player has at least one steal, with six having between
11 and 16. No one averages more than Bjorklund’s 29.3 mpg Five others
are averaging over 20 mpg while four more average over 10 mpg.
Texas has five players in double figures: Kat (16.7 ppg), Ashleigh (16.0 ppg),
Chassidy (15.0 ppg), Chelsea (11.4 ppg) and Yvonne (11.0 ppg). Kat and
Ashley just miss out on averaging a double double as Kat adds 9.0 rpg while
Ashley has a 9.1 ppg to go with her 9.7 rpg. Three other players are grabbing
at least 5 rpg. Ashleigh (28) and Yvonne (21) lead a group of five that have
at least 11 assists. Ashleigh’s 29 steals lead four others that are also in double
digits in steals. Kat is the top 3pt threat (15-41, 36.6%) with four others having
taken at 14 3s. Yvonne (7-14, 50.0%) and Chelsea (9-19, 47.4%) have the best percentage from BTA. Of the ten players on the roster, six have playedin all seven games. Chassidy has played in and started all six that she was
involved in. Every player is averaging at least 11 mpg. For this game, only
nine and possibly only eight, players will be available as Tiffany will sit out
the game serving a suspension for undisclosed violations of team rules and
Yvonne is recovering from a knee injury suffered in the UTPA game.
Projected starting lineups. For Texas, the regular starters are likely to start,
with the possibility that Chelsea will start in place of Yvonne if she is still
suffering from the effects of the knee injury suffered in Wednesday’s game.
For Tenn, the lineup is the one from the last game.

Tenn is basically using an eight player rotation. Texas normally uses 10 but will
be limited to eight or nine. It will be interesting to see how Ashley, Kat and
Anne Marie handle the posts that Tenn will be able to send against them. Tenn
has up to six players that they could use in the post positions, depending on health.
These range from 6-6 Cain to 6-1 Manning. Most are in the 6-3 to 6-4 range.
The Horns will need to stay out of foul trouble to successfully run this gauntlet.
The Lady Vols will test the Horns on the boards as they have plus 10 edge in
rebounding compared to their opponents. It will also be interesting to see Chassidy
play against her home state team. Hope she’s ready, whether or not she starts.
Simmons is the guard that could give the Horns real problems with her speed
and quickness. If Avant is able to play, she will give the Lady Vols a true PG
to run the team. It does seem that Tenn has moved away from having Stricklen
at the point in favor of Simmons. That freesSticklen up to play on the wing,
where she can rebound and score inside without having to worry about
handling the ball. Simmons also appearsto be a very good defender capable
of turning TOs into points. The one that may trouble the Horns is Manning,
who leads Tenn in steals with 16. Tenn will need to cover two to three 3pt
shooters every time. They have done a good job so far but will face a
Texas team that is making 38% of 3s.
Texas has played in seven games and Tenn. has played in 9.

Tenn is actually taking more 3s per game than the Horns. Both take 1.6 shots
a minute with Tenn having a slightly better percentage. Horns are getting to
the FT line 33 times a game. They are making more FTs a game than Tenn
attempts. Horns will rely on forcing steals to get easy baskets as they have
almost 4 more per game than Tenn. However, Tenn has the edge when
number of TOs per game is compared. Ashley by herself is averaging 4.0 bpg
while as a team, Tenn averages 4.4 bpg. Ashley will need to continue to block
or change shots without getting into foul trouble. Her ability to be more
comfortable scoring will also be a big boost in keeping Tenn from ignoring
her as an offensive option. Anne Marie will also help in keeping the Tenn
posts from helping out on penetrators as she is also capable of scoring
off feeds.
The Texassports.com has set up the table below showing the difference

The number in parenthesis in the second table is what Stanford and

areas against both teams. Hopefully, they will put the whole package
together against Tenn.
