One month after dropping a 65-62 game to Tech in Lubbock, the Horns get a chance to make up for that loss in Austin. It was a tight game with Tech’s 3pt lead at halftime ending up as the winning margin. Tech is sitting at 3-4 in Big 12 games while Texas’ two game winning streak has them at 4-3. Tech is 1-1 in their past two conference games, beating Colorado 66-60 on the road before losing to OSU 65-60 at home. Texas has road wins over Baylor 58-55 and OSU 91-74 in their last two Big 12 games. Tech is 2-1 in Big 12 road games while Texas has 2-1 home record. One of these teams will find that record falling to 2-2. Both teams have lost to A&M while Texas has also beaten Colorado. In summary, Texas and Tech have faced four common Big 12 opponents so far with Texas going 3-1 and Tech having a 1-3 record in those four games.
Tech is led in Big 12 scoring by Seals(# 41, 6-2 Sr. F) at 15.0 ppg and Mallard (# 20, 6-3 Fr. C)and Moore (# 3, 5-5 Sr. G) with 10.1 ppg. Murphree (# 13, 6-0 G)adds 8.4 ppg. In Big 12 play, Seals at 44.7% (42-94) and Roberson (# 31, 5-11 Jr. F) at 40% (16-40) are the only Lady Raiders making at least 40% of their FGs. Roberson has been the best 3pt shooter for Tech in conference play, making 6-13 (46.2%) while Murphree and Moore are each at 5-20 (25%)from BTA. Those 3 have taken 63.8% of 3s taken by in Big 12 play and made 64% of the 3s. Tech has four players making at least 73% from the FT line with Martin (# 14, 5-6 Jr.G)having made 15-15 FTs.
Mallard (9.7 rpg) and Seals (8.1 rpg)lead the Lady Raiders in rebounding. Roberson adds 6.3 rpg. Moore leads Tech with 2.86 assists per game which places her seventh in league stats. Seals nine blocks rank 8th in the league. Moore and Mallard lead the Lady Raiders with 12 steals each (9th in Big 12 games) while Murphree’s 11 is 13th league wide.
Tech has four players that have started all seven league games: Seals, Mallard, Murphree, and Roberson. Moore has started six of the seven Big 12 games. The Lady Raiders have 8 players averaging double digit minutes and two others that play at least 8 minutes. Depth should not be a problem for the Lady Raiders.
In league play, the Longhorns are led by Kat (14.7 ppg) and Brit (12.0 ppg)while Ashleigh adds 9.9 ppg. Kat and Ashleigh are the most accurate shooters for the Horns in Big 12 play at 45.7% and 58.3%, respectively. Brit (40.5%) and Carla 42.9%) are the other Longhorns hitting over 40% on FGs in conference play. Kat and Brit with 70 & 74 shots taken lead in FG attempts by just over 20 more attempts than the next closest shooter. Kat (18-40, 45.0%) and Brit (9-24, 37.5%) have taken 62% of the 3s in conference play. Ashleigh at 71.4% (5-7) is the most accurate 3pt shooter for the Horns in Big 12 games. But every perimeter player shoots the 3 as well as a couple of our bigs, Lindsey and Earnie. Of the 136 FTs attempted and 87 completed, Kat (21-26, 80.8%) and Brit (15-21, 71.4%)have taken 34.5% of the attempts and made 41.3% of total completed. The good news for the Horns is that five others have taken at least 10 FTs in league games. The bad news is that those players are hitting between 59 and 47% of their FTs.
Kat leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 rpg which ranks 9th in league play. The rest of the team averages at least 2 rpg each per Big 12 game. Carla’s 39 assists in league play ranks third in the league. Lindsey is tops in blocks with 14 while Gayle is second with 12. They are fifth and sixth in the league in blocks. Ashleigh leads the team with 15 steals during Big 12 games. That puts her fifth in the league.
While Kat has provided a steady presence throughout the season, Ashleigh has really stepped up in league play. Brit showed signs of getting out of her mini scoring slump against OSU, scoring the most points in league play since her 21 against Tech.
In the last game, Seals and Murphree were the big guns for the Lady Raiders with 16 and 19 pts, respectively. Seals also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. They combined to make 13-32 shots. The rest of the team made 9-27 shots. Mallard provided strong support inside, grabbing 7 rebounds. Neither team was very good offensively, with little to separate them. In FGs, Texas ended up 21-58 (36.2%) and Tech 22-59 (37.3%). Threes were also very close with Texas hitting 8-22 (36.4%) and Tech 6-16 (37.5%). FTs ended with Texas making 12-21 (57.1%) while Tech connected on 15-21 (71.4%). Texas led in rebounds (44-37), assists (16-11), blocks (7-1), and steals (11-9). The Horns lost the TO battle 16 to 15. What Horns fans remember is the foul called on Kat just before Carla drained a 3 that would have given Texas the lead with seconds left in the game.
The Horns will need stronger scoring inside (combined 4-12 FGs)and overall shooting, especially at the FT line. While the Horns had 7 blocks, they gave up a lot of easy inside shots. Earnie didn’t play in the first game but will help provide defense inside this time around. This time around, the Horns will have a different look to start the game: Ashleigh and Gayle will start for the Horns as these two have started along with Kat, Brit and Carla in the last two games which the Horns won. Tech’s inside lineup of Mallard and Seals is a tough combo to counter. They have teamed up to provide consistent inside scoring and rebounding.
The following Big 12 stats have the team rankings in those league categories in parenthesis.

Texas Tech preview is up. Still waiting for the texassports.com preview to come online.
Once again, there will be no TV for this game. The Texas schedule does have a link to CBS College Sports All Access which has the Texas-Tx Tech as a free event under “Live Events.” So, presumably, you can watch it live via your computer. Game time is 2PM. Local radio should be KVET 1300AM.
Edited to add the following promotions from texassports.com:
