Texas won their last game against OSU while Tech is on a two game losing streak. In the last nine seasons, Texas has won twice in Lubbock while losing 7. Tech put together a six game win streak in Lubbock between wins by Texas in the springs of 2003 and 2010. With two home wins sandwiching a win at Lubbock last season, Texas brings a 3 game winning streak into this game.
Common foes:
Texas: @Missouri, L 80-85 (OT); vs BU, L 72-87; vs OU 67-71 (OT)
Tech: vs Missouri, W63-56; @ OU, L 61-71; @ BU 51-64
In Big 12 play, Tech has three players scoring in double figures: Chynna Brown (# 00, 5-8 Soph. G) at 14.4 ppg; Kierra Mallard (# 20, 6-3 Jr. C/F) at 13.2 ppg; and Tenna Wickett (# 4, 6-3 Sr. C/F) at 10.8 ppg. Brown is doing this coming off the bench in league play. Of the ten players that have played in the five leagues games to date, only two have not attempted a 3pt shot. Casey Morris (# 15-, 5-9 Soph. G) at 0-11 from BTA has taken the most attempts. Jordan Barncastle (# 1, 6-2 Jr. F) has been the most productive Lady Raider from BTA at 5-9 (55.6%). She is closely followed by Brown’s 4-9 (44.4%). Wickett, Mallard and Mary Bokenkamp (# 24, 5-9 Soph. G) are averaging one 3 a game in league play, with Wickett having hit two, Mallard one and Bokenkamp 3. Tech has five players that have gotten to the FT line at least 12 times. Christine Hyde (# 5, 5-10 Soph. G) has the most FT attempts (13-23, 56.5%) while Brown has made the most FTs (16-19, 84.2%). Monique Smalls (# 23, 5-6 Soph. G) has the second best % in that group at 75.0% (9-12). Mallard (9.4 rpg) and Wickett (8.2 rpg) are the top rebounders for the Lady Raiders. Brown adds 5.0 rpg from the bench. Wickett, from her post position, leads the team in assists with 15 while Smalls has 13. Wickett and Small also rank 1st and 2nd in steals with 13 & 10, respectively. Mallard has 12 blocks in the five league games to lead Tech in that category. Wickett is second with 3.
Tech has fifteen players on their roster. Nine have played in all five Big 12 games. One has played in four league games. Seven players are averaging at least 14 minutes per game. Two just over 8. Starters Mallard, Wickett, and Smalls average between 33 and 34 mpg. Starters Barncastle and Morris average 20 and 24 mpg, respectively. Brown is the big gun off the bench for the Lady Raiders, averaging 30 mpg and leading them in scoring. Hyde is the other reserve that is receiving double digit minutes.
Chassidy (21.4 ppg), Kat (12.0 ppg) and Ashleigh (12.0 ppg) lead the team in scoring. Those three are the only Horns that have taken over 10 3s in league play. Chassidy leads the team in 3s made and attempted (12-36, 33.3%) while Kat has 7-23 (30.4%) and Ashleigh 3-18 (16.7%). Yvonne (3-8, 37.5%) and Chelsea (3-9, 33.3%) are the other Horns that have made a 3 in Big 12 play. Seven Horns have gotten to the FT line at least 11 times in five league games. Chassidy’s 21-23 for 91.3% tops the team in FTs made, attempted and completion %. Kat and Kristen are second in FT % at 81.8%, with each making 9-11 FTs. Kat tops the team in rebounding at 9.6 rpg while Ashleigh is second at 7.2 rpg. Chassidy (5.0 rpg), Ashley (4.8 rpg) and Kristen (4.6 rpg) add support on the boards. Ashleigh tops the team with 17 assists while Kat and Yvonne are second with 9 assists each. Ashley has 19 blocks while Kristen is second with 4. Ashleigh has 9 steals while Chassidy and Yvonne each chip with 7.
Horns go to Lubbock with an 11 player roster. Nine have played in Big 12 games with eight playing in all five games to date. One has played in four. Eight are averaging at least 10 minutes a game. Chassidy, Ashleigh, and Kat have started all five games and average between 37 and 34 minutes a game. Yvonne is on the court for barely under 30 minutes a game while Ashley is averaging just under 25 minutes a game. Kristen has been contributing around 20 mpg.Tech has had the same starting five for all Big 12 games although Brown is averaging 30 mpg. Texas had been using the same starting five up to the game with OSU when Kristen and Chelsea replaced Ashley and Yvonne. Per Coach G, this was done to avoid early foul trouble for Ashley and Yvonne and it appeared to work. Neither got in early foul trouble and both played well on both ends. I’ll assume that Coach G will try the same thing against Tech.

Texas Tech
Kat (6-2) Wickett (6-3)
Kristen (6-3) Mallard (6-3)
Chelsea (5-10) Morris (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Barncastle (6-2)
Ashleigh (5-8) Smalls (5-6)
[/pre]
Wickett, Mallard and Barncastle give Tech solid rebounding and scoring inside. All three are capable of hitting the 3 although they don’t do that often. For their careers, all three are averaging 39% or better from BTA although only Barncastle has taken more than 14 3s in a season. Wickett and Mallard provide almost half of the scoring for Tech. The defense from the Texas post players will be critical to winning this game. Kat’s ability to draw one of either Wickett or Mallard away from the lane will help the Texas rebounding and allow penetration. You can bet that Tech knows all about Chassidy by now and will game plan to stop her. It’s likely that Barncastle will start off on Chassidy simply due to potential matchups. A key will be if Chassidy can penetrate against the taller Barncastle. Brown provides a ton of points for Tech coming in from the bench. The Texas bench will have to match that at least. Mallard and Texas’ Moore played together at Frisco Mallard’s senior season after she transferred from Richardson-Berkner in the Dallas area.

Look for another physical game. Texas will run and Tech will slow it down a bit but not much. With Wickett, Mallard and Barncastle, Tech tends to work the ball inside while Texas looks for the 3 shot. Ashley will need to stay on the floor to provide defense inside the paint. Both Wickett and Mallard have been very good offensively and the Texas posts will be challenged to slow them down and to rebound. One of Wickett or Mallard will be charged with following Kat out to the 3pt line unless Tech uses a zone. Both teams get to the FT at least 20 times a game. Wonder if this will be a game where the teams will spend a lot of time at the FT line? Tech is slightly better at making FTs while Texas gets to the FT line a bit more. That tends to offset the advantage Tech in FT % and Texas does in number of FTs attempted. Texas is tops in rebounding while Tech is # 2 in rebounding margin. This is another area where it’s hard to see either having a big advantage. Texas is going to have to be strong on the boards to keep Tech from getting second chance points. Tech will be looking to snap a two game losing streak while Texas is looking for their second Big 12 win. This should be another close exciting game for fans although most of us would prefer a big lead by the Horns and a cruise to the finish.

Tech to hold health fair before Texas game, starting at 5:30 pm.
Lady Raider thread about the game. DblT81, who started the thread, has a really nice table showing the Texas/Tx. Tech history, with more details from 1990-91 on. On the second page, mgood1lists the players by birth date to show who was born before Tech beat Texas for the first time. Pretty interesting thread.
Game is 7 pm CST. KVET 1300 AM will carry the game in the Austin area. Raidervision will carry an online feed. Click on the Lady Raider preview to find a link to that. FWIW, I have some complains from LR fans about it at times this season.
