South Florida is 9-4 while Texas is 7-3. They will face off for the championship of the Baskeball Traveler’s Classic as both have won the first two games they played. South Florida is something of a puzzle, winning over Auburn, UAB, and Wake while losing to Middle Tenn, Morgan State and Samford.Through 12 games, the Bulls have tried five different lineups. The one constant has been Andrea Smith (# 21, 5-8 Jr. G). In the last three games, these four have joined her in the starting lineup: Andrell Smith (# 12, 5-8 Jr. G); Kaneisha Saunders (# 3, 5-7 Soph. G); Porche Grant (# 11, 6-2 Sr. C); and Leondra Doomes-Stephens (# 2, 5-10 Sr. F/C). There are 14 players on the roster. Nine have started at least 2 games. Those nine are averaging in double digit minutes. Three have played in between 3 and 9 games with none averaging more than seven minutes. Tahira Johnson (#13. 6-1 Soph. F) is redshirting this year due to an ACL injury. Sasha Bernard (# 5, 5-6 RS Fr.) transferred from Indiana and will be able to compete at the end of the fall semester. She has yet to see action in this tourney through the first game.

Andrea Smith leads the Bulls with a 17.3 ppg average. She is the only player in double figures. Daleisha Carn (# 33, 6-0 RS Jr. F); Sanders and Grant are all averaging just over 8 ppg. Andrea is the engine that runs the South Florida offense. Not only is she averaging twice as many ppg as anyone else, she has taken and made twice as many FGs as anyone else on the team. She is also the top 3pt threat as she has taken and made 22-77 3s. Twin Andrell is the closest teammate in those categories at 9-29 from BTA.

Texas has 11 players available and ten are averaging at least 10 minutes per game in games they have played.

Four Horns are averaging in double digit scoring. Kat is at 16.9 ppg. Chassidy is averaging 15.9 ppg. Ashleigh adds 15.4 ppg. Yvonne is at 10.5 ppg. Chelsea (9.5 ppg) and Ashley (806 ppg) are just off that pace. Kat leads in 3s with 24-61 (39.3%). Four others have attempted at least 23 3s. Kat (39-44, 88.6%), Chassidy (39-49, 79.6%) and Chelsea (29-46, 63.0%) have all been to the FT line at least 44 times. Four others have attempted at least 25 FTs. Ashley (9.5 rpg) and Kat (8.1 rpg) continue to lead the team on the boards. Ashley’s 38 blocks tops the team with Anne Marie’s 5 blocks second. Six Horns have at least 12 steals, with Ashleigh’s 31 tops.

Projected Starting Lineups:

[pre]
Texas USF

Kat (6-2) Doomes-Stevens (5-10)
Ashley (6-4) Grant (6-2)
Ashleigh (5-8) Saunders (5-8)
Chassidy (5-10) Andrell Smith (5-8)
Yvonne (5-7) Andrea Smith (5-8)
[/pre]

Horns will look to shut down Andrea Smith. You do that and you will throw a monkey wrench into USF’s offense. The Horns will need to take care of the ball as the Bulls have four players with at least 20 steals. Horns will also need to be aware of which Smith twin is Andrea and which is Andrell.

Based on stats through the UNLV game for both South Florida and the Horns.

Like the other teams in this tournament, South Florida takes a FG attempt about every 20 seconds. Horns match this pace and do a better job of finishing inside or BTA. Where the Bulls could give Texas trouble is in their ability to take the ball away via steals and turnovers. South Florida has done a good job of not turning the ball over. Horns will pressure them and find out if they can handle that pressure. The Horns’ propensity for losing the ball could play into South Florida’s game plan if the Horns do not cut know on their 19+ TOs a game. South Florida will need to cover several Horns on the perimeter while the Horns can concentrate on basically shutting down one player.

Game is at 7 pm CST. KVET 1300 AM will carry the game in the Austin area.

nice write up babhorn, thanks! i've read conflicting game times today, though.

the Statesman has the game time as 3:00 pm central time. but Texassports has it at 7:00 pm.

i found this bracket online so statesman seems to have it wrong: Link

Intensity just not as good tonight....

Can anyone shed light on why AG's offense is so irregular?

I just hate to see all those bunnies get missed!!!

Sweet game! Love the way this team plays. They are not as good as they will be but they are pretty darn good. Tiffany did a great job in the second half on USF's leading scorer. Ashley had another great game in front of the home folks. I thought she had MVP locked up but Ashleigh is also a good choice for that.

Time to relax and enjoy the holidays.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

Yea good game tonite. Really though A.Gayle was the MVP
She did a good job on the boards and giving us sum offense !
T.Moore did some good things tonite. There were a lot of players tonite for Texas that played well. We kept the turnovers down.So that was good. C.Fussell did well also along K.Nash

regarding AG's offense, there were some horrid non-calls. She took a bit of a beating that the three blind mice tended not to pay attention to, which was even more pronounced in the USF game.

The other thing that really hurts beyond just the missed bunnies, even when accompanied by the whistle, is that the FT shooting continues to be a struggle. I cannot help but to feel that if they could get her to bend her knees a little more on the FT that the FT% would increase at least to 75%. Until that happens, the hack-a-shaq sort of techniques will continue to be effective at negating her offensive potential...

As conference play grows close, I would REALLY like to see this squad BEGIN games with the same intensity that they come out in the second half of games with...slow starts lead to games that were close at the half where we really had no business being close.

Overall on the tournament...organizers need to be happy that Texas fans are willing to travel...at times it seemed as though we were almost the entirety of the fans in the stands

I think we even outnumbered the UNLV fans in the Saturday night game...

Box score in one of the papers showed attendance at a tick under one thousand but I don't know WHERE they got that total unless they included all arena workers, players, coaches, refs and the handful of cabbies that thankfully were showing up after the games...

I agree, we need to start the 1st half, the same way we are starting the 2nd half. And continue to play as a team.Look like the freshmans are pushing the veterans. And I like that! You really need everybody on the team in order to really be effective. Unless you just have a Outstanding Go To Player.Which we dont at this time. The key to our season, is staying together and playing hard when you hit the floor.
