Both SMU and Texas come into the 2010 Las Vegas Basketball Travelers Classic at 5-3. Texas will be looking to stop a one game losing streak while SMU seeks to stretch a one game winning streak into two. SMU will have been off since 12/07/10 while Texas last played on 12/12/10. Will either team have some rust to brush off? This will be a home coming for Ashley.SMU has 13 players listed on their roster although one, Kristin Hernandez (# 2, 5-9 RS Jr. Tranfer G) has not played. SMU has three transfers from Big 12 schools, including Hernandez from Okie State, Raquel Christian (# 35-5-6 RS Sr. G) from Texas Tech, and Heidi Brandenburg (# 20-, 6-3 RS Jr. P/F) from Missouri. Seven of the 13 have played in all eight games. Two have played in seven games. The rotation is basically eight players in double digit minutes. Of those eight players, only one has not started at least one game. The starters for the past six games have played between 26 and 30 minutes a game. These starters are: Delisha Wills (# 5, 5-10 RS Sr. G); Haley Day (# 24, 5-10 Sr. G/F) and Christine Elliot (# 21, 6-2 Jr. P) who have started all eight games and Samantha Mahnesmith (# 33, 5-8 Jr. G) and Alsiha Filmore (# 22, 5-7 Soph. G) who have been in the starting lineup the past six games.
Wills (12.8 ppg) and Elliot (11.5 ppg) lead the Mustangs in scoring. Christian (9.6 ppg), Mahnesmith (9.6 ppg) and Day (9.1 ppg)make the rest of the top five scorers.

Both SMU and Texas have played eight games. Horns will have a size advantage inside as Elliot is the only SMU starter over 6 feet. SMU has two other players over 6 feet but they have played little so far. Kristen will add some experienced backup in the post for Texas although it’s not clear just how much she will play. SMU will lean on the outside shooting of Mahnesmith and Filmore and Elliot and Willis inside. Horns will have to defend Willis without putting her on the FT line where she is very good. Chassidy and Ashleigh will be looking rebound from their poor BTA shooting in the Tenn. game where they went a combined 2-14.

Neither team lets grass grow when they have the ball as they take a shot about 3 times a minute. Horns have a bit better overall shooting percentage (44.5 to 40.5) while SMU does better from BTA (37.7 to 35.7). Both get to the FT line and are effective there. Both turn over the ball probably more than their coaches would like with Texas averaging 20.5 TOs a game and SMU 18.0. Horns hold the advantage in steals and blocks, both areas that can lead to fast break points. And the Horns will get Tiffany back, another speedster who can finish.
For those of you heading to Vegas, the weather this weekend is supposed to be wet but warm.
