Texas vs. Rice - Reliant Tailgating

Reliant is obviously a really nice stadium, but there is just something nice and old school about Rice Stadium. It's a great place to watch a game.

There are no where near the number of seats at Rice as there are at Reliant. Many of the bleachers started breaking and they decided not to tarp over the seats in the endzones instead of fixing the seats. I believe the upper decks may be in similar shape. Thus while there is still a lot of charm to the old stadium there just wouldn't be enough tickets to generate the revenue that is being generated at Reliant. Plus I think the UT Athletic Department prefers these games in pro-stadiums and feel it is something that they can use for recruiting.

Veteran of too many Rice v. Texas games at Rice Stadium to ever think kindly of Reliant. Sure, cheerfully attend games there whenever Horns in town but atmosphere is anemic at best -- same old funk when you force-feed college sports onto venues with zero affinity.

Unsure about state of endzone bleachers at Rice Stadium but all others have been rehabilitated with aluminum recently. Still, counting endzones, stadium holds 72K+ and would have easily accomodated weak crowd at last Reliant RU-TX game. As earlier poster said, too damn bad playing Reliant when natural fit is a little jaunt north on Kirby Drive.

We have gone to a couple of games at Reliant, and they aren't very receptive to tailgating. They are very horsey about it, and run you out of the lot soon after the game. They don't seem to like tailgaters, IMO.
