Texas comes into the eighth meeting at 4-2 while Oral Roberts is 3-1. The teams last met on 11/25/2006 with Texas winning 79-40 in Austin. They will face off in the FEC Tuesday at 7 pm.
ORU is averaging just over 90 ppg after their 107-67 win over Houston Baptist on 11/28/09. For ORU, this game is the third of a three game swing through Texas. On 11/28/09. they beat Houston Baptist, on Monday 11/30/09, they take on Sam Houston State and the following day, 12/01/09, they come to Austin.

ORU is a small team with only 4 players on a 15 player roster at least 6-2. One is a transfer from Oregon State that seems to be sitting out this season and two others get only a few minutes per game. For the Golden Eagles, five players have started all four game with three others getting double digit minutes. Four more get between 7 and 2 minutes a game while three have yet to get into a game. They basically have an eight player rotation and start only one player over 6 feet.

Kevi Luper (#15, 5-10 Fr. G) at 30.3 ppg is the main scoring threat for ORU. Janae Voelker (#11, 5-10 Sr. G/F)at 15 ppg, Jace Bigham (#22, 5-6 Fr. G) at 12.5 ppg and Jordan Pyle (#20, 6-1 Soph.F) at 10.8 ppg are the other Golden Eagles in double digit scoring. Voelker is the leading rebounder at 9.0 rpg while Luper and Pyle are tied second with an average of 7.0 rpg. Georgia Jones (#4, 5-9 Soph. G) joins the above four in the starting line for all four games. Luper is the top 3pt threat for ORU, have made 8 of 21 from BTA. Those are tops among ORU players as is her 38.1% from BTA. Luper’s 19-22 (86.4%) tops the team for players having taken at least 10 FTs. Several players are perfect from the FT line including Pyle (9-9) and Noelia Quntas (#1, 6-1 Sr. G) at 8-8.

ORU averages 90.3 ppg after their game with Houston Baptist. They are hitting a respectable 44.9% from the field but a very poor 24.1% (27-112)from BTA. Thirty nine per cent of their FGA are from BTA. They do an excellent job from the FT line, making 19.6 FTs a game out of 25.5 attempts. They have been getting to the line a lot every game and taking advantage of their opportunities. They are susceptible to turning the ball over, averaging 23 TOs a game. Houston Baptist forced 29 TOs. Of course, Houston Baptist gave up 41 themselves.

Texas is averaging 70.3 ppg after their three game run through the Virgin Island where they beat Miss. State and Rutgers while losing to Southern Cal. They bring a 4-2 record into this game. Kat and Brit are tied for the scoring lead at 13.8 ppg. Ashleigh is third at 9.2 ppg. Kat continues to be the leasing rebounder for the Horns at 7.0 rpg. Ashley’s 5.7 rpg is second on the team while Kristen and Cokie are tied for third at 4.2 rpg. Lauren’s 4-4 FTs leads the team in FT percentage. Brit has msde 23-30 FTs, both team highs. Only four Horns are making over 60% of their FTs: Lauren, Brit (76.7%), Kat (11-15, 73.3%) and Kristen (9-13, 69.2%). As a team, the Horns are hitting 64.8% from the FT line. From BTA, Kat (12-22, 54.5%), Brit (6-16, 37.5%), Ashleigh (5-16, 31.3%), Earnie (2-9, 22.2%) and Erika (6-29, 20.7%)are the Horns most likely to take that shot. Texas has made 31-99 3s through six games.

While Texas is a guard/wing oriented scoring team that thrives on running, the posts do provide a scoring punch inside that teams will need to account for. Counting Ashley, Cokie, Kristen and Earnie, they are scoring 32.3% of the team’s 70.3 ppg. Those four also have 26 of the team’s 31 blocks with Ashley’s 15 and Cokie’s 7 tops. They have 16 of 51 team steals.

Projected starters:
[pre]
Texas ORU

Ashleigh (5-8) Bigham(5-6)
Kat(6-2) Luper(5-10)
Erika(5-10) Jones(5-9)
Ashley(6-4) Pyle(6-1)
Earnie(6-1) Voelker(5-10)[/pre]

Look for Texas to have a big height advantage inside. Expect Cokie and Ashley to look for a lot of layups and short jumpers. I’m not sure who will start off on Luper, ORU’s leading scorer, but Brit will get a lot of time guarding her since she will present a lot problems with her height and quickness. While the Golden Eagles do come into the game averaging more rebounds per game, the Horns should dominate the boards if they work hard at boxing out their smaller opponents.

ORU turning the ball over an average of 23 times a game should have the Horns ready to get after them with pressure. However, ORU has forced an average of 28 TOs a game, including 41 in their last game, so they also know something about causing TOs.

Stats are through 11/28/09 for Texas and ORU. Game stats for ORU’s game against Sam Houston Stare are not included.

The game starts at 7pm at the FEC. KVET 1300 AM should be carrying the game.
It also looks like the game may be available online through cbs sports.

Orange Santa will be at the game, presumably available for photos since fans are encouraged to bring their cameras. You can get a free general admission ticket by bringing one new unwrapped toy.

Hey, BAB, all this Ashley, Ashleigh??

Use "AT" and "AG", it's much easier for us to get!!

Thanks for the preview BabHorn!!

Carol Ross mentioned on the radio last night that the Oral Roberts team was a "feisty" one, and that the Horns should expect a tough game.

I like the black uni's too...wish we used them for all away games.

Feisty is an understatement. Went to the Texas-ORU game at Reunion for the NCAA first round a few years ago. Dirty, Dirty team. They sent J Carey to the ground with an illegal screen. Brutal.

I will NEVER forget how dirty they were to Jamie Carey and just all-around. Hope they have changed their ways since then.

The head coach and two assistants from that season (2004-05)are still around, so maybe nothing has changed. Maybe Jamie needs to come talk to the team about what to expect.

If the team can hit the 71+% of their FTs that they were hitting before the tournament, they will be fine, assuming the fouls are called. If they are not getting the calls, they need to be getting a lot of second and third chance pts.

Sometime free shots misses are the result of tired muscles - especially legs - so maybe 3 games in 3 days showed up in the FT percentage on the last day.

Forgot to add that Luper is hitting 61.8% of her FGs (47-of-76) through the first four ORU games. That's pretty good.

update: ORU beat Sam Houston State by 101-85. ORU committed 32 TOs but forced 28. Looked like a lot of fouls with 24 by ORU and 23 by SHS. 31 FTs by ORU and 27 by SHS. Fast paced game with ORU taking 78 shots and SHS 76.

This was ORU's third win in a row and second over a Texas team. The only lose the Golden Eagles have is to Kansas in the second game of the season, 106-80 in Lawrence.
