OSU comes into Wednesday’s game tied at 3-0 with Nebraska. Those two are tied at the top of the conference race. Texas comes in off a double overtime win at Lubbock to run its conference record to 1-2. OSU is 15-2 overall while Texas has a 12-5 record. They do not have played any common opponents in the Big 12 as of yet.
Say OSU and people will think “Andrea Riley” with good reason. The offense runs through her. She is an All American candidate for them. She has been the face of OSU women’s basketball since the senior arrived at OSU.
All stats used are for Big 12 play only, not season stats unless noted otherwise.
Riley [#10, 5-5 Sr. G]leads the Cowgirls with 34.7 ppg in Big 12 play. That ranks #1 in conference play. Tegan Cunningham [#1, 6-1 Sr. F] is second in scoring at 13.7 ppg in Big 12 play. Riley leads the team in assists with 4.7 apg. Riley tops her team and the Big 12 in FT % with 92% (23-25). The team as a whole has taken 45 FTs. Riley’s 25 represent 56% of the team total. Riley leads the Big 12 in 3pters made per game with 3.7. Garrison and Cunningham, each averaging 1.7 3s per game, take some pressure off of her. OSU is fifth in the league in scoring at 71.3 ppg.
Riley, Cunningham, Precious Robinson [#24, 6-0 Jr. G/F], Lakyn Garrison [#00, 5-5 Jr. G], and Megan Byford [#33, 6-2 Sr.C] have started all three conference games. They are an experienced group with Riley, Cunningham, and Garrison all playing over 38 minutes in conference games. For the season, only seven players have seen action in all 17 games. In Big 12 play, between 7 and 10 players have gotten into the games. It’s a short bench although there are 14 players on the roster. Toni Young [#15, 6-2 Fr. G/F] and Lindsey Keller [#25, 6-2 Fr. C] have seen action in all three conference games. Robinson [10.3 rpg] and Cunningham [8.7 rpg] are the most active on the boards for the Cowgirls in Big 12 play. Robinson is also the leading shot blocker at 2.3 bpg.
Texas is first in the league in scoring at 81.3 ppg. Not surprising, after giving up 91, 91 and 90 pts in their first three games, they also ranked last in defense with an average of 90.7 ppg given up.
Texas is led by four players in double figures in league play. Brit (17.7 ppg), Kat (12.7 ppg), Ashleigh (12.0 ppg) and Earnie (10.0 ppg) lead the Horns in scoring. Five others are averaging between 3.7 and 8.0 ppg. Ashleigh (11), Brit (10) and Kat (9)top the team in assists during Big 12 play. Earnie leads five players that have gotten to the FT line at least 10 times. Her 13-19 tops the team in FTs made and attempted. Brit’s 13-17 ties for FTs made and is second in FTs attempted. Kat’s 90% tops the list of those attempting at least 10 FTs although several players have made 100% of their FTs. AS a team, the Horns are making 70.1% of FTs in Big 12 play, good for ninth in the league. Brit (6-11, 54.5%) and Kat (5-16, 31.3%) are the top 3pt threats for the Horns. Everyone shoots when they have an open shot, as shown by the fact that only two players have taken less than 10 shots in 3 league games. Eight have taken between 10 and 38 shots with Brit (38), Kat (32), and Ashleigh (31) having attempted the most FGs. Kat is the top rebounder for the team in league play with an average of 7.7 rpg while Ashley adds 6.7 rpg. Four others add between 3.7 and 5.7 rpg each.
Ashley is second in the league with 4.7 bpg. Every Horn has at least one steal in league play with Brit’s 6 leading the way. As a team, the Horns’ 9.7 spg lead the league.
Projected starters-for Texas, these were the starters against Tech, for OSU, these five have started all three previous conference games.

OSU relies on Riley. Given her quickness and speed, it is very difficult to stop her offensively. However, one can slow her down and force others to take up the slack. Riley has 71 TOs, an average of 4.2 TOs a game. Horns will have to consider pressuring her full court to accomplish two things, one-get the ball out of her hands, two-force a TO. The other side of this is that Riley is quite capable of blowing pass any Texas defender and exploiting the disadvantage. She has taken 117 of OSU’s FT attempts this year. Her 23 FTs made in conference play are more than any other player has made. She takes over half of her team’s shots but has good 3pt shooters to kick the ball out to when she drives. It seems like a simple thing to do but it’s hard to put into practice.
Horns will have to dominate the boards. OSU will be at a height disadvantage. And they miss a lot of shots. Great opportunity for the Horns to fast break and get some easy baskets. They will have to defend the 3, not just by Riley but from Cunningham and Garrison who can also hit from BTA. Robinson and Cunningham give OSU a strong presence on the boards, so winning that battle will not be easy. But the Horns will be at home with a supportive crowd. As with every home game, Horns will need to win because away wins are tough to come by in the Big 12.
The game will not be televised although it is a top 25 matchup with OSU 15th in the AP and 19th in the coaches while Texas is 19th and 21st, respectively.
KVET 1300 AM will carry the game in the Austin area.
