Texas and North Texas come into this game with different results in their last two games. Texas has won two in a row to move to 7-2 overall while North Texas has lost their last two to drop to 7-4. This will be the 12th meeting between the two with Texas holding an 11-0 record against the Mean Green. The closest game was the first one on March 6, 1976, when the Longhorns took an OT 66-60 win. North Texas has some wins over some name schools, beating Oregon State 60-53 and Alabama 69-63. This game will mark the return of former Texas coach Karen Aston to Austin as head coach for the North Texas Mean Green.

North Texas has 13 players on the roster. Nine have played in all 11 games. Eight of those nine have started at least one game. Laura McCoy (# 4, 5-7 Soph. G) started the previous 10 games but came off the bench in the last game. She played 35 minutes. Jasmine Godbolt (# 24, 6-0 Jr. F), Tamara Torru (# 34, 5-10 Sr. G) and Brittney Hudson (# 5, 5-7 Sr. G) have started all 11 games. Sara Stanley (# 30, 6-0 Jr. F) and Alyssa Hankins (# 3, 5-5 Sr. G) were also starters in the Mean Green’s last game. Braylah Blakely (# 2, 6-0 Fr. F), Ash’Lynne Evans (# 1, 5-11 Soph. F) and Desiree Nelson (# 32, 5-10 Soph. G) are other key reserves that are averaging over double digit minutes, have played in at least 10 games or have started at least one game. The Mean Green have three players at 6-0 as their tallest players.

Three players are averaging in double figures: Godbolt (13.4 ppg), Torru (13.0 ppg) and Hudson (10.1 ppg). McCoy (10-47. 21.3%) and Torru (15-29, 51.7%) are the top threats from BTA for the Mean Green. Nelson (7-15, 46.7%) and Evan (6-15, 40.0%) are other 3pt shooters to be aware of. As expected, the top three scorers have the most FG attempts: Godbolt (57-146, 39.0%), Torru (46- 100,46.0%) and Hudson (37-114, 32.5%). McCoy(13-67-, 19.4%) is the only other player averaging at least six shots a game. Godbolt (33-70, 47.1%), Torru (36-47, 76.6%), Hudson (34-44, 77.3%), McCoy (32-33, 97.0%), Nelson (15-20, 75.0%), Evans (18-23, 78.3%) and Blakely (6-20, 30.0%) are the only players that have taken at least 10 FTs.

Godbolt is the leading rebounder for the Mean Green at 8.7 rpg. Torru, at 7.8 rpg, is second. McCoy (2.3 apg), Hudson (2.0 apg) and Hankins (1.9 apg) are the top assist leaders for North Texas. Hudson’s 31 steals tops the Mean Green in that category while Torru has 14 steals and Godbolt 10.Two players with 9 blocks each lead North Texas, Torru and Blakely.

Chassidy (16.6 ppg), Yvonne (11.9 ppg) and Ashleigh (11.2 ppg) top the Horns in scoring. Cokie (8.6 ppg) and Anne Marie (5.5 ppg) are the number 4 and 5 scorers. Chassidy is hitting 46.5% of her FGs (53-114). Yvonne (41-90, 45.6%) and Ashleigh (36-85, 42.4%) are the other Horns that have taken at least 85 shots. Chelsea’s 48.0% (12-25) leads the team, if you don’t count Kayla’s 2-2 for 100%. Five Horns have taken at least 15 3pters this season, topped by Chassidy’s 12-49 ( 24.5%). Yvonne (9-22, 40.9%) and Ashleigh (12-28, 42.9%) are the other main 3pt threats for the Horns. Chassidy has been the best at the FT line for the Horns. She has hit 91.2%, 31-34. Cokie, with 37 FT attempts, has been the one Horn that gone to the FT line the most. She has hit 23 for 62.2%. Anne Marie (12-16, 75.0%) and Chelsea (10-12, 83.3%) are the other Horns along with Chassidy that are hitting at least 75% of their FTs.

Ashley is the top rebounder at 8.6 rpg while Cokie is second at 5.7 rpg. Yvonne leads with 47 assists while Ashleigh (32), Chassidy (18) and Ashley (10) are the others with double digit assists for the season. Ashley has 37 blocks this season while Cokie has added 11. Yvonne’s 26 steals leads the team. Chassidy with 14 is the only other Horns with more than nine steals.

Horns have added Kayla to their active roster but are currently sitting Cassie due to an injury. The roster of available players remains at 10 with the guard position suffering the most attrition. Four players projected to play at the guard position are currently out: Tiffany, Cassie, Brady and Shanice. Shanice is out for the season with an ACL injury. Status for the others is pending recommendations for treatment and prognosis. Currently, four players are listed as guards: Chassidy, Yvonne, Ashleigh and Chelsea. However, with at least three of the forwards quick enough to play defensively against smaller players on the perimeter, the starters in the backcourt have been able to stay close to 30 minutes per game or just over. Look for Chelsea’s 16 mpg to increase a bit.[pre]
Texas UNT

Ashley (6-4) Godbolt (6-0)
Cokie (6-4) Stanley (6-0)
Yvonne (5-7) Hudson (5-7)
Ashleigh (5-8) Hankins (5-5)
Chassidy (5-10) Torru (5-10) [/pre]

Horns will enjoy a height advantage in this game, regardless of whether the starters or the bench posts are in. For Texas, the Mean Green will present a problem in keeping them off the boards. They have played a strong schedule to date with some good wins and are a plus 7 in rebounding even though they have been outsized in almost all the games. They do a good job of getting to the FT line and, therefore, getting the other team in foul trouble. This game will feature two of the top FT shooters in the nation in McCoy of UNT and Chassidy for Texas. For Texas, McCoy is not the player they want to see on the FT line. Godbolt is the player they want to send there if the game is on the line. Texas will be concentrating defensively on keeping pressure on Godbolt, Torru and Hudson. Evans and Nelson are others the Horns will have to track at the 3pt line. The MeanGreen will be looking for a strong rebounding effort to slow down the Texas fast break. They will have trouble stopping the Texas post game if the Horns don’t bring the ball down to dribble.

This could be a crowd pleaser in that both teams look like they will run often. Should be lots of up and down action. North Texas will have to go against one of the top shot blockers in the nation. Neither team has been good at taking care of the ball with Texas averaging 18 TOs a game and UNT 21. Texas is doing a better job of turning over opponents. Both teams like the 3pter with hardly any difference between the teams in making the trey. FTs could be important, depending if one team is able to get to the line and the other is not. Neither team shoots a high percentage but Texas has an edge in making FTs. I look for a tough game for Texas but expect Texas to pull away as the game goes on. I look for the posts for Texas to all hit double digits in minutes played and to make life difficult for the North Texas post players.

I know the Longhorns will probably clobber us! But I gotta pull for my almamater this time. GO MEAN GREEN!!!

I expect for the Longhorns to make us earn every point and play tough defense for 40 minutes.

Leave it to Goestenkors once again to have her ranked team down by 9 at the half to an unranked team at home. If Coach Aston beats Goestenkors then you know we truly have a mediocrity coach!

It is so typical of that one "fan" on here to be lurking in a sewer waiting for that one moment of adversity in hopes that he/she can spew more vile and venom.

71-62 final

shot 69.6% FG and 75% BTA in the 2nd half...guess our "mediocre coach" gave a pretty good half-time speech

They said on radio that Yvonne was not cleared to play because of concussive-like symptoms. They only found out just before the game. Also, it sounds like Chas got seriously clobbered on the nose in the first half, but she came back and scored 18 in 2nd half.

This is like the Cal game...lots of adversity but they pulled together and pulled out the win. #proud

Great win by the team as they battled it out and overcame a short bench.

It is so unfortunate we have a poster on here who wants nothing more than for this team to fail so they can feel some sense of self-worth.

I purposely made a point to go to this game because I knew this type of gritty/tough effort would be needed to win. First off North Texas was extremely well coached, they knew our plays and exactly how to defend them. You couple that with the loss of Anderson and this was the perfect storm. Our already guard depleted lineup was really tested tonight. And we are very well coached despite our naysayer!! The team came out with much more energy in the second half and that killer instinct we will need for a full 40 minutes. Those who didn't attend this game will never understand how talented NT actually is, don't let the name fool you. They will win their conference and I have no doubt they will make the ncaa's. We beat a good team when we were probably at about 60%. The future looks bright! I love the fight in this team

Yep, utfanforlife is right, this was a GOOD North Texas team, they played extremely hard and scraped and fought for everything. Plus, they were hitting their threes, and I don't mean right behind the 3 point line, I mean way beyond the NBA 3-point line - it was incredible. We couldn't buy a basket in the first half, shot 33%, but WOW! in the second half we were on fire. I'm pretty sure Chas' nose is broken, I expect to see her in a face mask for the next few weeks. She took a wicked blow. Cokie got bonked in the nose too, but not as badly as Chas. It was a very physical game and the refs "let them play" so to speak.

Texas pretty much "full court pressed" the whole second half and I don't know how they did it with such a short bench - but they gutted it out and their defensive intensity pulled out the win. Nneka and Kayla really helped, they can both jump like deer, rebound, and provide excellent defensive intensity.

We really missed Yvonne tonight, she is the steals leader and she can handle the ball under pressure very well. Nevertheless we pulled out a win that we would have likely lost last year. It was a good gutty victory!

Very ugly game for Texas for about 25 minutes while North Texas played lights out. Yet the Horns kept it close before going on a run to take the lead for good. One has to really love the fight in this team. Right now, they are down to three guards after starting the season with eight.

This is a tough minded team that doesn’t panic but keeping working at it. That press really helped change the game around. North Texas is a good team that has is probably underrated. Horns made it more difficult for them to get a clean look from BTA in the second half but they still managed to hit several.

I’m pretty happy with this win as it was a very tough win. I thought it would be the toughest of the four after Michigan State but hadn’t anticipated that North Texas would play so well. Kudos to Coach Aston for such a good squad. And a very big “Horns Up” to the Texas players who wouldn’t give up and to the coaching staff for making adjustments to pull the win off.

Really proud of this team for pulling things together in the second half and coming away with the win. It was a tough night for AT, Chassidy and Chelsea, but the team found a way. As has already been mentioned, this was the type of game the Horns probably would have lost at this point last season. Such resiliency in these ladies! Proud of them all!!

Get heathly, Brady.

Best wishes for full recovery.

Also to Yvonne being cleared to play next Tuesday. We need her for conference a lot more than for the next two games.

Whatcha say!?!?! My Mean Green Eagles put up a fight!! YES!! I don't really follow UNT WCBB but I heard they had a new coach. I might just have to follow this team and see what happens. You know I love a Cinderella story. Plus ya'll know I want UNT to join the Big 12. LOL! Our football team isn't quite there and we all know who and what drives Big 12! LOL!!!

Man I would love to see this game. LHN - ARGH!!

That's a lot of "shooters" to be without in Brady, Tiffany, and Cassie; unforunate as only Cassie seems likely to return, and she'd be counted on more for running the offense than for shooting against those teams playing a zone defense.

I see there was no Ronisha Major listed in the box score. Nothing was mentioned (that I heard) on the radio about her being hurt, so I'm starting to believe she is going to be that player who is constantly in the coach's doghouse.

Ro didn't play. I have to think she is having trouble with learning some facet of the system, either offensively or defensively or both, because she is a scorer. She would definitely get time on the wing with Kayla.

I did wonder why Ronisha didn't play as I assumed these last four non-confernece games would be a good opportunity to inrease her playing time, and integrate her into the rotation. It may have something to do with the play of UNT; they took their first lead just 6 min and 45 sec into the game and the Horns didn't get it back until there were just over 7 mins left on the clock. Perhaps the coaches didn't want to take any chances with Yvonne being out, and UNT's unexpected performance. Hopefully we'll see more of Ro' the next three games as we're definitely going to need her during Big12 play. And hopefully Cassie will be back in action very soon.
