The Texas-Nebraska series began on Feb. 28, 1981in Austin with the Longhorns winning 95-63. Texas holds a 13-6 edge in the series with Nebraska having last season 91-79 in Lincoln in route to their perfect 16-0 Big 12 season. This year, the Huskers have struggled, entering this Tuesday game at Austin with a 2-8 Big 12 record and a four game losing streak. Texas, coming off a poor game against Baylor, has won 5 of the last 6 for a 5-5 conference record. The Longhorns will be seeking their second straight home win over the Huskers.

The Huskers are led by two players in double digits: Lindsey Moore (# 00. 5-9 Soph. G) with a 14.5 ppg average and Jordan Hooper (# 35-, 6-2 Fr. F) at 13.6 ppg. Two other Huskers provide scoring support: Catheryn Redmon (# 44, 6-3 Sr. C, 8.9 ppg) and Kaitlyn Burke (# 5, 5-7 Jr. G, 7.3 ppg). Hooper, one of the best freshmen in the league, is Nebraska’s top 3pt threat, having hit on 22-66 (33.3%) 3s in league play. That’s almost half of the 57 3s Nebraska has made in Big 12 games. Moore (14-49, 28.6%) and Burke (9-38, 23.7%) are the other main threats from BTA. If Periago continues to start, Horns will need to be aware that she has taken 2/3 of her shots from BTA. Of her 30 FG attempts in league play, 20 have been 3s (4-20, 20.0%). Four Huskers are the only ones that have gotten to the FT line at least 10 times in league play. Moore (33-42, 78.6%), Hooper (26-35, 74.3%), and Redmon (19-33, 57.6%) have had the most success in getting to the FT line. Katya Leick (# 20, 6-1 Soph. F) is the other Husker with more than 10 FT attempts at 10-14 (71.4%). Burke has the best FT % among NU players that have played in at least 6 Big 12 games (6-7, 85.7%). Redmon (8.7 rpg) and Hooper (6.5 rpg) are the top rebounders for Nebraska. Leick adds 5.3 rpg. Moore leads with 52 assists while Burke (26 assists) and Leick (10 assists) are the other Huskers with double digit assists. Redmon has 24 blocks while Hooper is second with 5. Nebraska does not have anyone with double digit steals. Moore and Redmon with 9 each lead the team. Hooper is third with 8 steals.

Nebraska has started four players in all ten Big 12 games to date: Moore; Hooper; Redmon and Burke. Three others have alternated at the fifth spot: Leick, Harleen Sidhu (# 21, 6-1 Jr. F) and Jessica Periago (# 13, 6-4 Sr. C). Periago has started the last two games for Nebraska, allowing Hooper to move from a post position inside to playing a wing position. These seven players are the only ones that have gotten into all ten league games. Moore (39.5 mpg), Hooper (30.2 mpg), and Burke (33.6 mpg) are the players averaging over 30 minutes per game. Redmon (29.0 mpg), Lieck (25.3 (mpg), and Periago (17.0 mpg) are also averaging over 10 minutes a game. Kellie McCann-Smith (# 1, 5-9 Fr. G), who has played in 8 games, is the only other player averaging over 10 minutes a game. Sidhu, who has played in all ten games, is averaging 8.4 minutes per game.

Two players have not played all season: Rebecca Woodberry (# 33, 5-10 Fr. G) and Katie Simon (# 14, 6-2 Fr. F). Both Woodberry and Simon are likely to redshirt. Simon is recovering from a foot injury this season. Two others have played in the OOC games but have played in only one conference game (Dominique Kelley, # 24, 5-7 Sr. G) or have not gotten into any conference games (Layne Reeves, # 12, 5-11 Soph. G). Kelley underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Sept. 29 and has not played since the OU game. Reeves had her fifth knee surgery on Nov. 24 and has announced her retirement from playing.

Texas is led by three players in double digit scoring: Chassidy (20.5 ppg), Ashleigh (10.9 ppg) and Kat (10.6 ppg). Chassidy (28-64, 43.8%) and Kat (16-46, 34.8%) are the top 3pt threats for Texas while Yvonne (10-23, 43.5%) is also hitting well from BTA. Chassidy tops Texas in FT shooting for number of makes and attempts at 41-49 (83.7%). Kat’s 90% (18-20) from the FT line is tops on the team while Kristen at 70.0% (14-20) is the only other Horn at or over 70% from the FT line. Kat is the leading rebounder at 8.4 rpg. Chassidy (5.2 rpg), Ashleigh (5.5 rpg) and Kristen (5.5 rpg) are the other players averaging over 5 rpg. Kristen’s 2.8 offensive rebs per game is sixth in the league and tops on the team. Kat also tops the team and ties for the league lead with 6.3 defensive rebounds per game. Ashleigh tops the team with 37 assists and 15 steals. Three other Horns have at least 17 assists. Chassidy (13) and Yvonne (11) also have double digit steals in league play. Ashley leads Texas in blocks with 34 while Kristen has 11. Ashley has 96 blocks for the season and needs four more to hit the century mark in blocks for the second season in a row.Of the 11 active players on the Texas roster, eight have played in all ten games with one getting into seven and the other two into one game. Chas (32.8 mpg), Kat (35.0 mpg) and Ashleigh (34.1 mpg) are all averaging over 32 minutes a game. All eight players that have played in all ten games are averaging in double digits in minutes played. Anne Marie, who has gotten into 7 league games, is averaging 7.3 minutes per game.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game. I think Yvonne will be back in the starting lineup although Ashley could remain there if Texas wants to go big.

Texas NU

Kat (6-2) Redmon (6-3)
Kristen (6-3) Periago (6-4)
Yvonne (5-7) Moore (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Hooper (6-2)
Ashleigh (5-8) Burke (5-7) [/pre]

Moore and Hooper are the main scoring threats for Nebraska. Hooper especially is dangerous from BTA. Depending on UT’s starting lineup, Kat or Chassidy will be responsible for guarding Hooper. While Periago does shoot mainly from outside-she’s 4-20 (20.0%) from BTA with a total of 30 FT attempts, she is not a main offensive focus for Nebraska. Moore and Hooper will be the main focus of the Texas defensive efforts while Nebraska will be looking at slowing or shutting down Kat and Chassidy. I think Texas has more weapons than Nebraska can shut down. Tiffany and Chelsea will needed to provide defense on the perimeter and rebounding inside as well as some scoring. Anne Marie should be able to match up with Redmon and possibly Periago in relief of Kristen and Ashley.

Nebraska is dependent on the 3, taking more 3s than any other Big 12 team except for OU who has taken 224 to NU’s 219. However, the Huskers are not hitting many of those bombs. They do well when they get to the FT line but are 11th in number of FTs attempted. Due to injuries, the Huskers have gone to primarily a zone defense, good news for the Texas 3pt shooters. Penetration by guards prepared to either finish or kick out to an open shooter will be critical to get from the Texas guards.

This is a good game for the Horns to have after running into the Baylor buzzsaw Saturday. They should be able to dominate rebounding, inside scoring, and should be able to hit some of those shots they missed against Baylor. Moore and Hooper will present problems but Horns should be able to handle them with a rotation of players on them. Horns will have to guard the perimeter well as Nebraska takes almost 37% of their shots from BTA.

Has anyone thanked you recently for posting these before each game?

They lost seniors Kelsey Griffin, Yvonne Turner, and Cory Montgomery to graduation. Also Dominique Kelley has been limited this year by a knee injury and surgery.

I hope the Horns don't take this game too lightly and lose focus....like we did in Missouri....

I want to see a smash-mouth performance, up by 25 or 30 in the last 10 min., so we can clear the bench and see McCoy, Sara, etc.....

I agree focus, focus, focus and don't go to sleep that middle 10 minutes in the 2nd half. If we can play defense the full 40 minutes and hit our shots we should win.

up 20 with just under eight to go...might not be a bench-clearing, but we have seen McCoy and we are also getting to see more of Kristen.

Shots like that buzzer beater that NU just hit are frustrating as all get out though...

got kinda of interesting there at the end when Nebraska made a run helped by a couple of prayer shots. But Horns sucked it up and finished strong at the FT line. Great second half. I know that Tiff was sick but don't know what was wrong with Chelsea. Hopefully, nothing serious.

Good job, Horns.

Horns are in sole possesion of 5th place, half a game behind #4 KSU and a game ahead of ISU. Depends on how KSU fares against Colorado at home and how ISU does on the road at Tech Wednesday on whether Texas goes into the weekend tied for 4th.

Our posts really did a very good job tonight. They (Kristen, Ashley, and Anne Marie) took 15 of the 60 FGs tonight and converted 8 for a total of 16 pts to go with 16 rebs. Kristen, as noted in an earlier post, almost had a double double with 10 rebs and 8 pts.

Love those quotes from Coach Yori. Add me to the list of those that are very glad Chassidy is at Texas!!
