After losing the first two league games, Texas has alternated wins and losses in the next four games. Wednesday night, they will look to grab a win after losing to OU 73-67 in Norman. Horns will be playing Missouri who comes into Austin at 0-6. The Tigers dropped a close game to OSU 62-58 at home. They have come close several times to winning in the Big 12, losing to Tech 69-63, and 72-63 to Kansas. Those close games have come at home while they have had trouble on the road. Both will be looking to start the last 2/3 of the conference games on a positive note.

Missouri has two players averaging double figures in scoring in league play: BreAnna Brock (#22, 6-2 Sr. F) is averaging 14.2 ppg and Christine Flores (#50, 6-3 Sr. F) is averaging 13.0 ppg. Sydney Crafton (#21, 5-10 Jr. G) adds 8 ppg. As would be expected, Brock and Flores are among the top Tigers in FG percentage: Brock is at 43.8% (28-64) while Flores is at 42.6% (26-61). Crafton is hitting 42.5% of her shots (17-40) while Kyley Simmons (#15, 5-7 Fr. G) is another over 40% from the field at 42.9% (9-21). Ten players have attempted at least one trey in conference play. Five are the main threats, though. Simmons (7-17, 41.2%), Brock (5-13, 38.5%) and Flores (8-21, 38.1%) are the best from BTA. Morgan Eye (#30, 5-9 Fr. G; 6-28, 21.4%) and Liene Priede (#32, 5-10 Jr. G; 4-17, 23.5%) are others that have attempted at least 10 3s in conference games. Look for Brock and Flores to also shine from the FT line as they have the top percentages from the FT line at 82.8% (24-29) and 81.8% (18-22), respectively. There are two Tigers who have hit 3 of 3 and 2 of 2 from the FT line. Either Brock or Flores has led Missouri in scoring in the six Big 12 games.

In their last game against OSU, the Tigers hit on 11-30 3s (36.7%). Flores hit 4 of 6 from BTA. Eye was 3 of 6 while Priede hit on 2-4.

Flores is second in career blocks for Missouri with 174. She trails Mary Bruggestrass who is the career leader with 177 blocks. She is first with 12 blocks this season for Missouri. Brock is second with 7. Brock (7.0 rpg), Crafton (5.3 rpg) and Flores (5.2 rpg) rank one, two and three in rebounding. Simmons leads Missouri in assists with an average of 3.5 (21 total) while Flores is second at 2.7 (16 total). Crafton has 8 steals to top Missouri. Simmons and Brock have five each.

Twelve Tigers have played in league games. Seven have played in all six games to date. Those seven are averaging at least 14 mpg with three averaging over 30 mpg. Two others have played in five games. In tight games, Missouri relies on those seven plus one or two others. In blowouts, they play everyone at the end of the game. Brock, Flores, Simmons and Crafton have started all six Big 12 games. Bailey Gee (#2, 5-11 Sr. G) has started the last three conference games after Priede started the first three Big 12 games. Bree Fowler (#3, 5-9 Fr. G) and Liz Smith (#45, 6-1 Sr. C) have played in five league games.

Chassidy (15.3 ppg) and Ashleigh (10.7 ppg) lead the Horns in scoring. Yvonne is averaging 9.0 ppg while three others are around 7 ppg: Cokie (7.8 ppg), Ashley (7.7 ppg) and Chelsea (7.0 ppg). Chassidy (31-90, 34.4%) and Ashleigh (23-72, 31.9%) have made and taken the most FGs for the Horns. Yvonne (18-48, 37.5%) and Ashley (20-48, 41.7%) rank third in number of FGs attempted. Including Chelsea and Tiffany, our guards are 84-248. That comes out to 60% of made FGs and 64.6% of FGs attempted from our guards. Chassidy is our primary 3pt threat, hitting 11 of 33 (33.3%). Chelsea has the best percentage from BTA at 40.0% (8-20). Ashleigh (4-19, 21.1%) and Yvonne (3-14, 21.4%) are the other Horns that have over 10 3pt attempts. Chassidy and Yvonne each has gone to the FT line 22 times. Chassidy has hit 19 for 86.4% while Yvonne has connected on 15 (68.2%). Ashleigh is the only other Horn with at least 20 FT attempts, going 14-20 (70.0%).

Three Horns are averaging 6 or more rebounds per game. Ashley leads the trio at 6.8 rpg. Cokie (6.3 rpg) and Nneka (6.2 rpg) are second and third. Chassidy is fourth at 5.7 rpg. Yvonne has 41 assists to lead the team. Ashleigh with 15 is the only other Horn that has reached double digits in assists. Ashley has 14 blocks while Anne Marie is second with five. Three have double figures in steals, led by Yvonne’s 13. Ashleigh has 12 and Ashley 10. Chassidy is fourth with nine.Of the 11 Horns that have played in league games, seven have seen action in all six. Those seven are averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Kayla has been in five games and averages 6.4 mpg. Cokie missed two games with a calf injury before returning in the last game. She has played in four games with an average of 21.8 mpg. Our starting backcourt is all averaging over 30 minutes per game: Chassidy (34.0 mpg), Ashleigh (31.7 mpg) and Yvonne (31.3 mpg). With Cokie able to play, our rotation has been primarily four posts and four guards: Ashley, Cokie, Nneka and Anne Marie at the post and Yvonne, Chassidy, Ashleigh and Chelsea in the backcourt. Also available are forwards Ronisha and Kayla and guard Tiffany.

Starting lineups are based on the last game. For Texas, Cokie could replace Nneka in the starting lineup although that would depend on how much she has recovered from her calf injury. A shakeup in the starting lineup is also possible to try to get the Horns off to a good start on offense. Missouri has started the same starting lineup for the past three games.

[pre]
Texas Missouri

Ashley (6-4) Flores (6-3)
Nneka (6-1) Brock (6-2)
Yvonne (5-7) Simmons (5-7)
Ashleigh (5-8) Crafton (5-10)
Chassidy (5-10) Gee (5-11) [/pre]

Like a lot of Big 12 posts, Flores is capable of hitting the 3. Whichever of the Texas posts is guarding her will need to remember that. She hit 4 of 6 against OSU when they were slow to cover her outside. Brock can also hit from BTA. When both are on the floor for Missouri, the Tigers have two players that require their defenders to play them at the 3pt line. Missouri will be looking to slow down or stop the Horns’ inside game. The guards for Texas will receive even more attention as the Tigers want to have them take contested shots. Keeping the guards from making an easy entry pass inside will be big for both teams.

Team stats are Big 12 stats.

Missouri has had trouble stopping teams on the road. Of course, their three road games have been Baylor, KSU and A&M, not easy teams to keep from scoring, especially on their home court. Both Missouri and Texas are having trouble getting the ball into the hoop with both shooting less than 38% from the field. Missouri has an advantage from BTA as they are making a decent 36.8% from BTA compared to Texas’ 29.5%. They also make three more 3s on five more attempts. Horns will need to guard the 3pt line. With Missouri’s posts able to shoot the 3, a big part of that defensive effort will fall on the Texas posts as well. While Texas gets most of their scoring from their backcourt, they do make a concerted effort to get the posts involved. Missouri will look to stop or make it difficult to get the Texas posts involved. A big part of Texas’ offense is getting to the FT line. When they can convert from there, Horns have an easier time scoring. Missouri doesn’t get to the FT line as much but do a much better job of converting, making almost 80% as a team. Neither team has much of an advantage in outrebounding their opponents. Where Texas could find an advantage in forcing TOs. Missouri is a minus ten in the TO category. A big part of that is steals, where Texas has about a 2 to 1 advantage.

Game time is 7 pm this Wednesday, 01/25/2012 at the FEC. The game will be carried on the Longhorn Network for TV. The radio broadcast will be on KVET 1300 AM with the pregame starting at 6:45 PM.

Well I predicted at the beginning of the year we would be horrible the first 1/3 of the season, 1st 6 games and we were - 2-4 record. I'm looking for the tide to turn tonight. But I was also expecting Nneka, Kayla and Cassie to be playing a lot more minutes by now. So let's see what this next 6 games hold.

I think I predicted 20-10 for the season. We're 12-6 right now. If that team that beat A&M would show up for the next 12 games that would FABULOUS!!!

After seeing ND whoop the Lady Vols last night I really do not feel bad about the Longhorns any more. I didn't feel that bad about the team to begin w/ but I certainly gained a little more tolerance.

Let's go HORNS!! Don't sleep on Mizzou.

I smell something too but it isn't a trap. Rhymes with it though, and I think we all know where (and who) that odor is coming from. No doubt you do want the team to lose because then you can insert all of the bouncing icons; we all know won't happen, and hasn't ever happened, when we win.

Looks like we're up 5-13 w/ 14:19 to go in the 1st half.

Lets go HORNS!!!

Just got back and checked gametracker and looks like we're up 5 at the half. Let's go, Horns, hang tough in the second! Missouri has had a really rough start to league play and they are hungry!

Great 17 pt win! Loved to see Ro' get in at the end and nail the 3 pointer. No fear, they put in the game, and she's ready to score! Looks like Brewer got in for a minute at the end also. When we were up by 18 with 3:50 to go I would have liked to see Ronisha and Kayla put in at the point, give them each a solid four minutes on the floor, but at least they saw some action. Stats looks good but can't wait to hear from those who were at the game. Good job, Horns!

Somebody comeback and report in. THX

It was a good game. Texas came out with a lot of intensity and hit their first few shots, which always seems to give them confidence. The announcers (as I was listening the radio after the game) said Coach Huey was responsible for scouting Mizzou's offense sets from which to draw up the game plan. The defensive plan was a good one as Texas completely frustrated Mizzou for the first few minutes of the game. The defense was intense and Mizzou could not execute their offense.

We got 16 or so points ahead in the first half and then we let off the pedal and they climbed back in it due to hitting some 3-pointers. I didn't realize, until listening to the radio guys, that all but 16 of Mizzou's points were either 3-pointers or free shots. The announcers said the coaches knew they would shoot and hit a lot of 3-pointers, but the game plan was to stop as many as possible and NOT give up other points.

Texas came out with greater defensive intensity in the second half and quickly got the lead back and built it up to 22 (I believe) at one point, before Coach began subbing pretty liberally and the lead then went from 16-20 at any given time. We gave up 6 threes in the first half but only 1 in the second half. That was a good half time "pep" talk.

In the second half they were face guarding Chas, and she had to work really hard to get her shots, but she did. Yvonne was dy-no-mite in the second half, she had some great fast breaks and floaters in the lane. Chas had a highlight fast break bucket too. They really had a lot of fun and they kept up their defensive intensity.

Cokie still does not have her timing back as she had a couple of walks and another turn over or two. She still doesn't seem comfortable catching in the post, turning and shooting. They did however, have some high low passes from Cokie to AG and visa versa that were really pretty.

They ran a new offensive play a couple of times that resulted in a break to the bucket and an assisted layup. It was a GREAT looking play and was the result of about 5 really quick passes. It was a thing of beauty!

The Mizzou coach got a technical, she must have said something really BAD to the ref as she trotted down the court. Yvonne (I think) was just dribbling to Texas' offensive end, not a player around her, when the ref blew the whistle, I thought, "what the heck happened???"
wtf.gif
Then the ref ran to the scorekeeper and signaled "technical" and pointed at the Mizzou coach. She was livid. I think it was Chelsea who had just defended a Mizzou offensive player under the bucket, resulting in a miss but not a foul, and a Texas rebound. I think the Mizzou coach thought her player was fouled and must have said something to the ref as Yvonne dribbled up the court. Chas hit both FT.

It was a fun game to watch. There were not many turnovers by either team so it was a pretty clean game, didn't get sloppy at all by either team. It was probably a good confidence-building game. Now let's go get those Red Raiders!

Well, here’s my impressions.
We started out strong on both ends, jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Almost double Missouri’s point total until we started sending them to the FT line. If the best 3pt and FT shooting team in conference, they are right there. As a combo of the two, they may be the best. Chassidy, Yvonne, and Ashley all sat in the first half with two fouls and Missouri made a run. Our subs had trouble scoring both then and later in the second half when both Yvonne and Chassidy took a break at the same time. Missouri just doesn’t have any height inside other than Flores and Brock. Both are quick and play outside a lot. Horns did mostly a very good job denying them the 3ball.

We got good production from our four primary posts: Ashley, Cokie, Anne Marie and Nneka. All scored, rebounded well and played their defensive assignments well. For the most part, except for losing them occasionally, they hounded Flores and Brock anything they broke for an outside shot. Ro and Kayla got in for about four and two minutes. Tiffany played in both halves-played well defensively but her shot is a bit off. Had one rim out and totally missed on another. Chelsea continued her strong play on both ends. Took a nasty fall once but bounced right up. Cokie took two or three spills, not trying to take a charge, just knocked down. It was a physical game but not as physical as some we have seen. I thought some of the calls were kinda weird but the refs seemed consistent.

Missouri’s coach got a technical protesting a blocked shot which she thought was a foul. I think the only reason she got the foul was because the clipboard she was holding slipped out of her hand while she was about five feet on the court. Maybe she threw it down. Anyway, a ref looked back and immediately signed a technical. Two easy points for Chassidy.

Yvonne and Chassidy provided around half our points. Both were on tonight. I think Chassidy ended as leading scorer but they were only one or two points apart last I looked. Very unselfish play by everyone. Passed the ball around, found the open shooter. Both Yvonne and Chassidy had some one on one plays with the clock running down. Definitely looked inside for the posts and got some good return passes. Cokie and Ashley are good at the high low play.

One complaint: I don’t remember us going to the FT line much. Haven’t seen the stats so can’t verify.

Missouri cleared their bench with about 3 minutes to go. Texas already had two subs in and send two others to the scorers table right after although they didn’t get in until there were about 2 minutes left.

At any rate, it was an enjoyable game and pretty stress free after the first couple of minutes of the second half.

AAS post game story

Post game story from Bohls with some comments on Cokie and Cassie, nothing none of us hadn't already thought about and about Texas' chances of getting an NCAA invite.

Even though Tech has lost several games, they are still ranked and will be when the two play Saturday. A win there would be another win over a top 25 team for the Horns' NCAA resume.

I was quite impressed with this win, because Mizzou was good enough to win this game if we gave them the opportunity. And I like the way they responded after halftime I am almost positive that the "talk" worked wonders. Looking at the stats you can see that Texas dominated the game, but it was even more apparent in person. Coach Pingeton got a technical by accident actually. She was banging on her clipboard and it slipped out of her hand. Its always good to get a conference win and protect your home court.

I also want to reflect back to what I said after game one of the B12, Kansas is a REALLY good team. They should be ranked and I still believe they will finish no worse that fourth in the league. We will be at .500 by weeks end and I look forward for the tide to begin to shift into what most of us expected see this season. As I always say, better late than never.

RE: The technical...

It was really kind of an accident...when we got that steal right under their basket and scored, after a time out, the Coach was upset with her team, and threw down her clipboard...it skittered out onto the court, resulting in a T...

Can someone who saw the game, as good as the stats look, tell me if we really fouled that much more than MO? The box score shows 21 fouls for the Horns vs. 12 for the Tigers, so obviously that is what was called. But were they all good calls, or were the refs just being extra vigilant? It's hard for me to believe we fouled that much more than them.

Most of the fouling was in the first half. Texas had a rash of tripping fouls. Ann Marie got tangled up with Flores, Yvonne tripped the guard bringing the ball up, I think there was 1 or 2 more trips. Nneka had an off ball foul. I'm pretty sure we got called for the only moving screen of the night even though both teams did it all night.

It was one of those ref crews that likes to call off ball and touch fouls 90 ft from the basket but then lets you get hammered or hacked if you take the ball into the paint (and you're wearing white). I thought everytime Cokie got the ball in the post, went up strong, and missed she was hacked on the arm. But I don't think she got a foul called all night.
