Texas (16-8; 5-8) will host KSU (15-9; 5-8) on Wednesday. Horns will be looking to even the season series after suffering a 66-57 loss in Manhattan two weeks ago on Feb. 04, 2015. Texas will be trying to win their second Big 12 game in a row, a feat they last completed in their first two league games. The Wildcats will be looking to snap back into the win column after suffering an OT loss to Tech on Sunday, 74-68. Horns hold a 15-14 edge in the series. The loss this season broke a two game winning streak for the Horns over the Wildcats. With the possibility that all three teams ahead in the standings at 6-7 could lose, a win could move the winner into a tie for third place in the league. KSU is 1-5 on the road and Texas is 4-2 at home.

Brianna Lewis (# 22, 6-5 Soph. F) and Ashia Woods (# 23, 5-10 Sr. G) are the leading scorers for the Wildcats at 12.0 ppg and 11.2 ppg , respectively. Haley Texada (# 1, 5-6 Sr. G), one of two Texans on the KSU roster, adds 9.5 ppg while Kindred Wesemann (# 24, 5-6 Soph. G) contributes 9.4 ppg. The main shooters for KSU are Lewis (61-149; 40.9%), Wesemann (41-122; 33.6%) and Woods (52-118; 44.1%). The Wildcats rank ninth in FG% as Woods’ 44.1% tops the team in FG%. Only Woods, Erica Young (# 2, 6-2 Soph. F) at 42.1% (8-19) and Lewis at 40.9% are making at least 40% of their FG attempts. Wesemann is their primary 3pt shooter as she ranks 7th in the league in 3pt % at 33.8% on 27-80 3pters. She is tied for second in the league in number of 3s made per game at 2.1. She has two other capable 3pt shooters to take some of the pressure off in Texada (15-47; 31.9%) and Brianna Craig (# 20, 5-9 Jr. G; 16-47, 34.0%). Woods (2-16, 12.5%) and Shaelyn Martin (# 50, 6-0 Fr. G; 4-24, 16.7%) are also willing to take their shot from BTA. Among players that have seen action in at least ten league games, Jessica Sheble (# 0, 6-2 Soph. F) has the best FT% on the team at 85.7% on 6-7 FTs. Woods (39-75; 52.0%) and Lewis (34-60; 56.7%) are the leaders in FTs made and attempted. No one else has more than Texada’s 23-32 (71.9%). Wesemann (13-17; 76.5%) and Craig (10-13; 76.9%) are the other Wildcats converting more than 67% of their FTs. KSU ranks last in the league in FT % at 61.1%.

KSU has three players ranked among the top 18 rebounders in the league: Lewis (6.8 rpg—7th), Woods (6.2 rpg—13th) and Martin (5.3 rpg—18th). Despite that, KSU has a negative 6.1 rebounding margin. KSU has three players that do an excellent job of getting the ball to their teammates. Woods averages 3.3 apg. Martin adds 2.5 apg and Wesemann pitches 2.4 apg. Lewis is second in the league in blocks with 40 (3.1 bpg). KSU has 53 blocks overall. Three Wildcats have over 20 steals: Woods and Martin have 27 steals each while Lewis has 22.KSU’s 9.5 steals per game ranks them second in the league.

Lewis, Martin, Texada, Wesemann and Woods started the past six games, stretch during which KSU has gone 4-2 although they are 1-2 in their last three games. Lewis (32.5 mpg), Woods (33.1 mpg), Wesemann (34.0 mpg) and Martin (32.4 mpg) barely come off the court for a rest. Texada (24.3 mpg) and Craig (27.7 mpg) are the only others in double digit minutes. Sheble is the only other player to see action in all 13 games and she averages 5.6 mpg. In the previous game against Texas, five players came off the bench but only Craig with 21 minutes saw significant time. Sheble was in for four minutes while the other three combined for three minutes.

Ariel leads the team in scoring with an average of 10.0 ppg. Imani (9.4 ppg) and Kelsey (9.1 ppg) are knocking on the double digit scoring threshold. Three Horns have reached 100 FG attempts: Brady (34-105. 32.4%), Kelsey (51-100, 51.0%) and Brooke (34-100, 34.0%). Ariel should be the next to reach that number as she has 96 attempts (made 31 for 32.3%). Imani has the best FG% at 57.0% on 49-86 FGs. Brady (14-50; 28.0%) and Brooke (17-49; 34.7%) continue to be the main 3pt threats for the Horns. In the last two games, Brady and Brooke seem to have regained their shooting touch from BTA as in the past three games, Brady is 6-12 (50.0%) and Brooke is 9-16 (56.3%). Krystle (5-24; 20.0%) and Ariel (4-20; 20.0%) are the only other players to have taken double digit 3pt attempts. Ariel is second in FTs attempted to Imani (32) with 31 and tied with Imani for first in FTs made with 24. However, she has done this in nine games while Imani has compiled hers in 13 games. Brooke is the leader in FT % at 82.4% (14-17) with Ariel (77.4%), Imani (75.0%), Kelsey (72.7%), Brady (76.0%), Empress (78.9%), Nekia (76.9%) and Krystle (75.0%) all contributing to Texas’ 72.1% from the FT line. That has Texas tied with KU for the fourth best FT% in the league.

Posts Imani and Kelsey lead the way in rebounding with Imani averaging 6.7 rpg and Kelsey 6.5 rpg. Ariel (3.2 rpg), Brady (3.8 rpg), Brooke (3.3 rpg), Empress (3.7 rpg) and Brianna (3.1 rpg) provide solid support on the boards. Texas is second to Baylor (+9.1) with a rebounding margin of plus 8.8. That is almost double the third place team (+4.9). Brady leads the way with 3.0 apg with Empress (2.7 apg) and Brooke (2.2 apg) combining with three others averaging over 1 apg to help move the ball for better shots. They help Texas rank third in the league with 14.6 apg. Imani (24 blocks) and Kelsey (19 blocks) rank 5th and 6th in the league in blocks per game. As a team, the Horns are 3rd in the league in blocks per game. Brady is the leader in steals with12 with Krystle joining her in double digit steals with 11. Imani and Kelsey each has seven steals while Ariel and Brooke have picked off seven each.

Brianna slid into the starting lineup in place of Imani versus Kansas. Brooke, Ariel, Kelsey and Brady continued their starting streak. Kelsey has started for all 13 Big 12 games. Diani got into her first Big 12 game versus Kansas, scoring her first FG in conference play. All fourteen available players have seen action in at least one league game with nine having at least one start. Ten are averaging at least 11 minutes per game with Brady topping the squad at 32.4 mpg. Kelsey and Brooke are tied for second for most mpg at 27.8.

Projected starters based on the last game:

Texas____________________KSU
Brianna (5-9 Soph. G)……….Woods (5-10 Sr. G)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C)………...Lewis (6-5 Soph. F)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G)……….Martin (6-0 Fr. G)
Brooke (5-4 Fr. G)…………..Wesemann (5-6 Soph. G)
Ariel (5-11 Fr. G)…………...Texada (5-6 Sr. G)

In their last game, KSU hit 9-24 3pters with Wesemann going off for 8-11. Horns tried to emulate the Wildcats, taking an uncharacteristic 23 3pters and only connecting on 3. Look for the Horns to clamp down on Wesemann while being aware of where Texada and Craig are when they are on the court. While Lewis is one of the premier shotblockers in the league, Horns should be able to take advantage of mismatches when both Imani and Kelsey are on the court together. A concern for KSU will be the fact that the Horns have started to come out of their shooting funk the last few games. While the Texas guards do not put up the number of 3s KSU does, they have been effective with Brooke and Brady combining to hit 15 of 28 from BTA in the past three games. Texas will need to get to the FT line while playing defense with minimal fouling.

Stats are Big 12 stats only.

Look for KSU to play zone and to slow the game down. KSU plays basically six players. Texas will need to look to speed up the game to their preferred tempo rather than slowing it down. Texas will have to be aggressive in attacking the zone and getting to the FT line. They will get open looks from BTA but need to look inside where they will have a significant height advantage. Kelsey and Imani hit 71% of their shots in the first game but only took a combined 17 shots out of 64 attempted by Texas. KSU is excellent at getting into the passing lanes. Texas will need to be aware of where the KSU players are, especially when trying long passes. Texas’ penchant for TOs will need to be curbed or Texas will need to force just as many TOs. Horns should dominate in rebounding but KSU did a good job in the first game of negating that advantage in the first game by forcing 19 TOs. Texas will need more from their bench than the four points they got in the first game. They usually get 15+ ppg from the bench.

Yes, just what this fan needed - a game with little suspense, a chance to cheer the bench for the last couple of minutes of the game.

Great game to watch. Horns were a bit to start but once Brady starting hitting 3s, it helped open the floodgates. Four players in double figures with Brady tops in scoring with 18 pts and rebounding with six rebs. 16 assists on 26 made baskets! :yippee:

Great game for Brady! Keep shooting those threes. One of the better games we've played in some time. Good movement. We didn't let the zone stop us and thank god almighty we limited our turnovers. Points came inside the paint and outside the arc. The revolving door wasn't revolving quite so fast and Karen was engaged from beginning to end.

I like McCarty but when she went to the bench early with fouls, I thought we played a better game while she sat. She only played 17 mins. but still got 11 points on solid shooting. She came back in the second half and was on fire. Hmmm. We don't play much without her on the floor but I wonder if she needs to come off the bench more often. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Now. Let's see if this team sticks around.

We don't play much without her because she is by far the best point guard on the team.Nothing against Krystal or Celina but when Brooke is on the floor I feel a lot better.

I also don't understand this revolving door you constantly speak of .Coach Aston has played the same lineup for sometime now.Brianna plays more against teams that play 4 guards and Kelsey with Imani play a lot more together when we play bigger teams, in this conf there aren't very many big teams.

Some players do better coming off the bench. They get a feel for the game and respond better. Considering how hot McCarty was when she returned, I wonder if she would do better off the bench. She has admitted that she feels huge pressure for being a Fresh with a huge role to play every game.

Brady caught fire the minute McCarty sat. And Celina has a better shooting percentage and is statistically as good in every area except the line. That said, I like McCarty a lot and can't wait to see how she matures each year.

A dozen players averaging double digit minutes. It has only been in the last couple of games that we didn't have a sub coming off the bench almost every other play. It was maddening to watch.

When you're a team that doesn't shoot the ball very well from the perimeter, which is why teams continue to play zones against them.It makes more sense to have your best 3 point shooters on the court at the same time as much as possible. It only helps Brady when Brooke is on the court.

Celina may have a better percentage than Brooke but numbers do lie at times.Brooke has taken way more shots than Celina so of course it's going to be better. She's taken a lot more 3's and shooting about 38% which is very good .Brooke is the best shooter on the team.

There was so much to like about this game. Just 12 TOs, and IIRC a lot of those came late in the game. Only 4 pts for KSU off TOs, compared to 21 for the Horns. If we'd had the same number of TOs as in other recent contests (23 vs. OSU, 19 in first KSU matchup) we might have seen a different result. Also impressive were the 16 assists vs. 5 for OSU, and shooting 82% from the line. I felt we looked a lot more like the team that was so dominant early in the season. Hopefully that means everyone is finally 100% recovered from their injuries, and that we've fully adjusted to life without Nneka. This team still has a lot of talent, and depth, and last night you got the sense we'd regained the confidence we'd lost during that mid-season slump. Overall just a very strong and balanced team effort. If we continue with that type of play from here on out, we're going to have a very nice finish to the season.

Funny how much better the offense looks when the guards hit their shots. Bad shooting doomed us in those embarrassing losses. The Big 12 exposed our weaknesses. Just hitting 30% on threes would have won us several of those games. Hopefully the drought is broken, but you can't count on it. What we desperately need is a star scorer in the back court. Good teams have them. So far Atkins hasn't been a consistent shooter, even though she is a terrific player. Hope she develops because we need a star guard who can take over a game. Until we get that we can't expect to be a top team.

In my opinion Lashann is that star guard that can takeover a game. She isn't a great shooter but is a great scorer. What I love about her game is the ability to break her defender down off the dribble and get into the lane at will. At the end of the game or late in the shot clock we can give her the ball and say here make a play, she's great at creating her own shot. I also think Ariel will continue to get better.

Brooke was in for first two minutes, maybe three, before having to sit. To state that Brady only heated up after Brooke went to the bench is too much credence to that sequence of events. Brady was on fire from BTA in the first half, Brooke in the second. Part of the reason Brooke had open looks was that they were smothering Brady when she got the ball. That was a direct result of her hitting four for four from BTA in the first half. Those two being on the floor at the same time really help each other get open looks, not just being a scoring threat but with their ability to pass the ball.

I like the starting lineup versus four guards. Brianna is a tough rebounder and she is capable of making that midrange jumper. That allows Kelsey and Imani to rotate in the post every 4-5 minutes. I like Brooke starting because, while Celina and Krystle may be able to distribute the ball as well as she does, she provides a scoring threat the others don’t, regardless of percentage comparison. You can see Brooke improving every game. She’s not averaging 27 minutes a game compared to Krystle’s 16 and Celina’s 13 because she’s a freshman but because she is a better overall player.

What has happened, beginning with Baylor, seems to be a renewed sense of purpose. The team took a step back versus OSU but made a big step forward against KSU. Regardless of the defense KSU used, a 2-3 (3-2?) and a 4-1 zone, the Horns were able to work the ball around and either get an open look or get it inside. The big thing was their ability to hit the open shot from our guards and the defense they played on KSU. Mitte was frustrated during the game.

We may think that it is simply a matter of plugging another player in when one goes down. But sometimes, the players need to process and mourn the loss of a close friend before they can move on. It looks like the Horns have done this and are working on reaching those goals that they set out to reach at the start of the season with Nneka.

I don’t think there was ever a doubt that Texas would be in the NCAAs. The question was a matter of seeding and continues to be one. Will a run late in the season and in the Big 12 tournament be enough to move the Horns up into the top 16? If they are a low seed, they are going to surprise some teams that may look only at the seeding and not the team.

McCarty is an excellent player. I enjoy watching her. I am glad we have her for three more seasons.

Who is coming off the bench is as important a strategy as the starting lineup. My only observation was that Brooke returned to the game in the second half and shot better than I have ever seen her shoot. Some players do better coming off the bench. Maybe she does. Maybe she doesn't. Merely observing that we just had one of our best games in several weeks and Brooke wasn't required to play the crucial role she normally has to play. It most likely is just a coincidence.

Four players on the team shoot better than Brooke on average per game. In my opinion, however, Brooke is an impact player with value beyond average points per game.

I don't think any player is "better" than any other player on this team. They have all showed signs of greatness and weakness at times during this season. Some are stronger at scoring but not as strong on defense. Some are known defenders that don't score all the time. Each have their part on this team, even down to the person with the least minutes. Last time I checked you need BOTH in this game. I like this team. Even through their adversity and all the challenges they've faced this year (including fair weather fans), they are still some ballers in my book! It was nice to see the coach pull up on the reigns and give them a little more freedom than what she has been. It looked like there was more flow and the instincts took back over! Hook 'Em!!!!:hookem:

Even though everyone on this board sees things differently from time to time, I can respect opinions and enjoy getting the different insight......but that is just what they are....opinions. You can take it or leave it. Thanks for filling a "newbie" in and all the included pre game stats are very helpful! I know that takes a lot of time!

Again, she shoots 38% from the 3 point line which is very good. On a team that doesn't shoot the ball very well from the perimeter particularly from the 3 point line. When teams play nothing but zone against them that's why she is so important.

On every team there are players better than others that's why you have starters and role players. That's why Kevin Durant gets paid the big bucks and the back up center doesn't.

That's all fine and dandy. Those numbers go up and down for each girl since the beginning of season. My point was not to diss Brooke so no need to be offended. I just don't see any ONE person better than any of them thus far this season. Nneka was IT!!! We don't have her anymore and EVERY girl has helped us and hurt us from time to time. This team needs unity and separating anyone for "part" of their game doesn't justify a player being better or worse at this point. We are FIGHTING to finish the Big 12 with some dignity from the great start we had.

I didn't diss Brooke, I was making the point that she was the best point guard on the team if players are worried about what fans say then they've already lost. I've always supported coach Aston and the team but if some fans don't feel the same way then so be it that's why they're fans, I will continue to support the team.

I did not say you dissed Brooke. I stated "MY point was not to diss Brooke". Just misunderstanding I guess! No worries! I don't think the girls care what anyone thinks of them. They care what they think of themselves. They know what they've got to improve on. I'm sure they know they can't please everyone, lol. They have GOT to be playing for each other and their school. I believe that's what they are doing. They do play with a lot of heart. Now on to Tech!!!!!
