Kansas is at 5-5 while Texas brings in a 3-7 record. One of the two will end a three game losing streak. Texas will be seeking their second Big 12 road win when they go to Kansas Saturday. Currently, the Longhorns are 1-4 in conference road games. Kansas is 2-3 at home in league play. Last time these two met, they kicked off league play with Kansas grabbing a 72-67 win in Austin. Texas will seek to return the favor by taking home a win at Lawrence. Kansas wants a sweep of the series.
The Jayhawks have four players averaging double figures in league play: Carolyn Davis (#21, 6-3 Jr. F) is averaging 17.7 ppg. Angel Goodrich (#3, 5-4 Jr. PG) adds 13.2 ppg. Aishah Sutherland (#11, 6-2 Sr. F) averages 11.2 ppg. Monica Engleman(#13, 5-11 Jr. G) is averaging 10.5 ppg. Only Natalie Knight (#42, 5-7 Fr. G) at 4.9 ppg averages more than 3 ppg among the others. Those four top scorers have all taken over 100 FG attempts, ranging from Sutherland’s 111 to Davis’ 132. Sutherland (43.2%) and Davis (53.8%) are the only ones hitting at least 40% of their FGs. Davis and Sutherland do their damage inside as they are a combined 0-2 from BTA. The Jayhawks have three players that have attempted more than 10 3pters in conference play: Goodrich (12-32, 37.5%), Engleman (9-27, 33.3%) and Knight (6-14, 42.9%). The other main 3pt threat is Charlicia (CeCe) Harper (#24, 5-8 Soph. G) who has hit 3 of 7 for 42.9%. The five starters, Davis, Goodrich, Sutherland, Engleman and Knight, are the five Jayhawks that have taken 12 or more FTs in league play. Davis (35-45, 77.8%) is the leader in FTs made and attempted. Goodrich (28-39, 71.8%) is second in those categories. Engleman at 80.0% (12-15) has the best percentage for KU from the FT line. Those five have taken all but 12 of KU’s 149 FTs.
Sutherland leads Kansas in rebounding at 9.1 rpg. Davis is second at 5.6 rpg. Goodrich and Engleman add 4.2 rpg each. Goodrich has 71 assists to lead four players with double figure assists in Big 12 play. Engleman (28), Knight (13) and Sutherland (12) are the others. Sutherland (17) and Davis (12) top KU in blocks. Goodrich (20 steals) and Harper (14) top four Jayhawks with double figure steals.
All five starters average over 32 mpg with Goodrich averaging 40 mpg. Top reserves Harper and Tania Jackson (#33, 6-2 Soph. F) average 14.1 and 9.5 mpg, respectively. In the first game between these two, Goodrich played 40 minutes, Engleman 39, Davis 38 and Sutherland 37. Harper and Jackson came off the bench to provide 17 and 5, respectively.
In the first league game for both, Goodrich led four Jayhawks in double figures with 20 pts. Engleman hit 3 3pters and ended up with 19 pts. Inside, Davis (16 pts, 10 rebs) and Sutherland (10 pts, 6 rebs) combined for 26 pts and 16 rebs.
Texas has three players averaging double figures: Chassidy at 15.9 ppg, Yvonne at 11.4 ppg and Ashleigh at 11.2 ppg. Those three have taken at least 100 FG attempts each in Big 12 play. Nneka’s 46.2% from the field tops the team. Ashley at 45.2% and Yvonne at 40.8% are the other two Horns hitting at least 40%. Chassidy just misses at 39.2%. Chassidy, Yvonne, Ashleigy and Chelsea have taken all but six 3pters in league play. Chassidy’s 22 of 58 for 37.9% tops the team in 3s made, attempted and percentage. Chelsea is at 34.6% on 9-26. Six Horns have taken at least 13 FTs, with Ashleigh’s 36 attempts tops. Chassidy has made the most (25) and has the best FT percentage (83.3%). Chelsea at 70.8% on 17-24 has the second highest FT percentage.
Nneka has taken over the rebounding lead at 5.9 rpg. Ashley adds 5.5 rpg while Chassidy is averaging 5.4 rpg. Yvonne almost doubles Ashleigh in assists, 62-34. They are the top two in that category. Ashley has 20 blocks while Nneka is second with 7. Yvonne (23) and Ashleigh (21) rank one-two in steals. Chassidy (16) and Ashley (11) are the other two with at least 10 steals.
While 11 players have played in league games, the rotation has tighten down to basically 8 players. Of those 8, seven appear to be available with Chelsea still out for at least another week with an ankle injury. With Tiffany possibly also having to sit out this game, Chassidy, Yvonne and Ashleigh will have to log 30+ minutes as they did against ISU. The post rotation, with Ronisha and Kayla getting minimal minutes, is a solid four player rotation among Ashley, Cokie, Anne Marie and Nneka. Those two joined the three available guards in the starting lineup in the last game. Horns will be shorthanded in the backcourt for the second straight game. Last game, this was addressed by going big, having three posts playing together. Chassidy, Ashleigh & Yvonne are averaging between 32 and 35 minutes per game.Projected starters are based on the last game. It’s easy to project the KU starters as only five have started in league play. Texas had a new starting five in the last game.

Horns fell into a 10 point deficit at the half and were down 23 with 10 minutes left before staging a furious rally that got as close as 2 points down with 15 seconds left before ending up losing 72-67. A key for Texas is come aggressive from the start. This was the last game that Ashley and Cokie played well as a tandem with both hitting 4 of 9 from the field to provide 17 points in the paint. Kansas hit 6-12 3s and got the FT line twice as much as Texas to pull out the win. Texas has had a problem making FGs on theroad. They will need to get to the FT line while limiting how many fouls they commit. Neither team was nor is doing well from the FT line but when the other gets twice as many chances, they will help themselves more. This should be a close game with the Horns’ ability to close on Kansas’s 3pt shooters being critical. Engleman was left open several time in Austin and hit 3 of 7 from behind the arc while Goodrich nailed two of two. Second chance points, determined by rebounding, will help Texas in seeking a win.
Expect backcourt players on both squads to play most of the game as Texas has no guards on the bench if Tiffany is unable to fly and Kansas does not use their bench guards much if at all. If Texas will have an advantage, it will be inside.
