Iowa State (15-5, 6-4) and Texas (9-11, 2-7) meet in Austin to complete their Conference series this season. ISU took the first game 73-65 in OT at Ames. That started off league play for both teams. Currently, Texas is on a two game winning streak while ISU is coming off a win over Texas Tech in Ames. ISU will seek to even its league road record at 3-3. They are 2-3 on road games at this time. Texas will be seeking their second straight Big 12 home win and third league win in a row. Texas trails in this series 10-13. They have lost to ISU twice in a row.
ISU has started the same lineup in all ten conference games with no starter averaging less than 8 ppg. Hallie Christofferson (# 5, 6-3 Jr. F) averages 13.8 ppg. Chelsea Poppens (# 33, 6-2 Sr. F) adds 11.1 ppg. Anna Prins (# 55, 6-7 Sr. C) is at 9.8 ppg. The main shooters include Christofferson (48-82, 58.5%), Poppens (36-79, 45.6%), Prins (37-99, 37.4%), Nikki Moody (# 4, 5-8 Soph. G; 27-86, 31.4%), Brynn Williamson (# 22, 5-11 Soph. G/F; 20-62, 32.3%) and, off the bench, Nicole (Kidd) Blaskowsky (# 15, 5-7 Fr. G; 21-53, 3936%). While pretty much any of the seven in the main rotation will take a three, Christofferson (16-33, 48.5%), Williamson (19-51, 37.3%), Blaskowsky (13-40, 32.5%) and Fallon Ellis (# 32, 5-11 Soph. G/F) have had the most success from BTA. ISU is second in the league in FT% at 76.8%. All five starters get to the FT line frequently and only Prins makes less than 70% at 69.2%. Christofferson (26-27, 96.3%), Poppens (37-44, 84.1%) and Moody (24-31, 77.4%) are not the ones Texas wants to see on the FT line.
ISU has 11 players that have gotten into league games. But only seven have played in all ten games. The other four have played in no more than four games and average five minutes or less. Christofferson (35.4 mpg), Poppens (29.2 mpg), Prins (26.0 mpg), Moody (35.8 mpg) and Williamson (36.6 mpg) have started all of the league games. Blaskowsky (23.5 mpg) and Ellis (11.0 mpg) come off the bench. Poppens and Prins at times are limited by foul trouble. These seven were the ones that played in the last game ISU and Texas squared off in.
Horns have three players in double figures: Nneka (13.3 ppg), Chassidy (12.4 ppg) and Imani (11.4 ppg). Those three, along with Empress, are the top four in making and attempting FGs. Nneka (47.2%) and Imani (46.0%) have the best FG% among players that have at least 10 FG attempts. Chassidy (14-52, 26.9%) and Gigi (6-21, 28.6%) are the main 3pt threats for the Horns in league play with Ashley (10/24, 41.7%) out with a knee injury. Among players that have attempted at least 10 FTs, Brady is the best at 84.6% (11-13) while Nneka (22-31, 71.0%) and Imani (23-30, 76.7%) join her as the other players over 70% from the FT line. Nneka is the leader in FT attempts while Imani has made the most FTs.
Imani (9.0 rpg) and Nneka (8.6 rpg) ae the top two rebounders. Chassidy adds 6.3 rpg while Sara (4.5 rpg) and Empress (4.3 rpg) are also contributors on the boards. Celina (24) and Empress (23) are running neck and neck for the assist lead. Imani (21) is the only Horn in double figure blocks. Four Horns have hit double digits in steals with Chassidy, Nneka and Celina at 11 each while Brady has ten steals.
Horns have 12 active players with Ashley and Anne Marie having missed several games due to injury. Eight players have started with Nneka, Imani, Chassidy, Empress and Celina getting the start in the last game. Chassidy (35.3 mpg), Nneka (32.8 mpg) and Empress (32.2 mpg) all average over 30 minutes per game. Imani, Ashley and Celina average in the mid 20 with five of the others averaging in double figures.
TEXAS ISU
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Moody (5-8 Soph. G)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Christofferson (6-3 Jr. F)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Poppens (6-2 Sr. F)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Williamson (5-11 Soph. G/F)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Prins (6-7 Sr. C)
Even with foul trouble, Poppens and Prins, who ended up fouling out, were the leading scorers for ISU. They did it in different ways with Prins going 7-15 from the field (1-4 from BTA) and Poppens picking up half her points at the FT line (8-9). Imani and Nneka will need to play at the high level they have done in the last couple of games to offset Prins and Poppens. While they have seen her on film, ISU has not yet played against Gigi who gives the Horns a big body on the perimeter capable of hitting the 3, something they lacked in the first game. Empress’ defense on Moody will be critical. She has now played against some of the best guards the Big 12 has and that experience should help her against Moody. ISU had trouble keeping Chassidy from getting her shots off. The better play of Nneka and Imani may make this task more difficult for ISU. These two teams match up well against each other and foul trouble may well decide the winner of the game.

The last game these two played swung on FTs, not so much during the regular 40 minutes as during the OT period when ISU hit on 10-16 FTs, not a great percentage but more than enough to offset Texas going 2-9 from the field and 2-3 from the FT line during OT. Horns did a poor job of keeping ISU from the FT line but did an excellent one in shutting down ISU’s 3pt attack. They did an excellent job of passing as they got 16 assists on 24 FGs made. TOs were only 17, well below the average of 20-21 they usually average.
Like in the TCU game, Horns will need to lock down the perimeter. ISU takes around 43% of their shots from BTA. They took 42% from BTA in the first game. Horns were successful in going inside as well as hitting from BTA during that first game. Prins and Poppens helped to negate the inside game of Texas as the post games of both basically played to a draw. Texas does have an advantage in that Imani has been forced to play more and, consequently, learn more than she was projected to initially. The game is likely to be a close game with FTs making the difference. Horns will need to hit their FTs as well as defend without putting ISU on the FT line, where they are making 76.8% of their FTs as a team. Offensive rebounding is one area where Texas has a big advantage. They will need to convert this into extra possessions because ISU is excellent at making the most of theirs. ISU is excellent in defensive rebounding, keeping opponents from extra possessions. The board play should be furious and physical. Post depth should favor Texas by a slight margin. As good as Texas has been scoring inside, ISU has been better. Texas will need to play tough interior defense without putting ISU on the FT line, where they excel.
