Texas hosts Iowa State on Wednesday at 8 pm. Texas is 1-3 in conference while ISU comes in at 0-4. Both teams are coming in off losses this past weekend. Texas fell to Baylor 77-59 at home while ISU dropped a home game to A&M, 59-33. In 20 meetings between the two, ISU holds an 11-9 edge, including winning the last three games. Horns will be looking to break that three game losing streak.
In conference play, ISU is led by two frontcourt players in double figures: Anna Prins (#55, 6-7 Jr. C) at 12.3 ppg and Chelsea Poppens (#33, 6-2 Jr. F) at 12.0 ppg. Brynn Williamson (#22, 5-11 Fr. G/F) and Nikki Moody (#4, 5-8 Fr. G) rank third and fourth in scoring at 6.5 and 6.3 ppg, respectively. Prins (21-46, 45.7%), Poppens (17-35, 48.6%) and Moody (+-33, 27.3%) are the top three ISU players in shot attempts. Three others have double digit shot attempts: Williamson (8-20, 40.0%), Lauren Mansfield (#10, 5-7 Sr. G; 6-24, 25.0%) and Hallie Christofferson (#5, 6-3 Soph. F). Willaimson has been their most effective 3pt shooter at 8-18, 44.4%. Prins has taken six treys in conference games, hitting 2 for a 33.3%. Moody (2-13, 15.4%) and Mansfield (2-9, 22.2%) are other 3pt threats for ISU. Christofferson has only taken 5 treys but has hit 3 for 40%. Poppens is the only Cyclone to get the FT line more than 8 times in league play. She has hit 14 of 21 for 66.7%. Prins has made 5 of 8 for 62.5%. Chassidy Cole (#23, 5-8 Sr. G) is 2-2 from the FT line and Moody has hit on 5-6, 83.3%.
Poppins leads the team in rebounds (9.5 rpg) and steals (11). Prins is second in rebounds at 5.3 rpg. Moody, with 19 assists, is the only Cyclone in double digit assists. Prins has four blocks to lead the team. Three others have one block each. Mansfield is second in steals with seven.
ISU has 14 players that have seen action during the season but only ten have been active in league play. Seven have started at least two of the four league games. Poppens and Moody have started all four league games. Prins and Christofferson have started three. Williamson, Mansfield and Cole have started two. Amanda Zimmerman (#42, 6-1 Jr. F) has played on all four league games. Kelsey Harris (#3, 5-10 Soph. G) has played in three while Fallon Ellis (#32, 5-11 Fr. G/F) has logged minutes in two games. Moody, Mansfield, Wlliamson, Poppens and Prins started the last game. Moody (33.2 mpg) and Poppens (32.0 mpg) average over 30 minutes per game. Five others average over 20 mpg: Prins (27.0 mpg), Williamson (24.8 mpg), Mansfield (28.5 mpg), Christofferson (26.3 mpg) and Cole (21.5 mpg). Harris (12.0 mpg) is the only other Cyclone averaging double digit minutes.
Horns are let by Chassidy (15.5 ppg), Ashleigh (12.3 ppg) and Ashley (9.5 ppg). Chassidy (21-62, 33.9%) and Ashleigh (19-51, 37.3%) have taken and made the most FGs for the Horns. Ashley (17-32, 53.1%) and Kayla (2-4, 50.0%) are the two Horns hitting at least 50% of their shots from the field. Chassidy (6-23, 26.1%) has been the most proficient for the Horns from BTA. Yvonne (1-11, 9.1%) and Chelsea (4-10, 40.0%) are the other two Horns that have taken at least 10 treys in league play. Horn have four players that have taken at least 10 FTs in the four league games. They are led by Chassidy who has connected on 14 of 16 FT for a percentage of 87.5%. Ashleigh (9-12, 75.0%), Yvonne (6-10, 60.0%) and Chelsea (7-12, 58.3%) are the other three. Anne Marie is the only other Horn hitting at least 80% as she has connected on 4 of 5 FTs.
Ashley, Cokie and Nneka are 1-2-3 in rebounding with averages of 7.5, 7.0, and 6.3, respectively. Chassidy is fourth at 5.8 rpg. Yvonne’s 30 assists tops the team. She is the only Horn with more than 8 (Ashleigh) in league play. Ashley leads in blocks with 8 while Cokie and Anne Marie have 3 each. Ashley also tops the team in steals with 10 while Yvonne has 7, Ashleigh 6 and Chassidy 5.
While the Horns have been bolstered by having Tiffany’s return, Cokie has a calf injury that caused her to miss the last game and leaves her day to day. It is unlikely that she will return in less than a week. So the Horns are holding at 10 available players. Seven of those, leaving out Cokie, are averaging at least 14 mpg. Four of those are starters Chassidy (33.0 mpg), Ashleigh (31.0 mpg), Yvonne (30.5 mpg) and Ashley (26.0 mpg). Chelsea (23.0 mpg), Anne Marie (14.3 mpg) and Nneka (16.8 mpg) are the others averaging in double digits. Kayla has played in all four games (6.0 mpg) while Ronisha and Tiffany played in their first league game against Baylor.Projected starting lineups are based on the last game. While Anne Marie could start this game, it’s possible that Nneka will get her first start. ISU has gone with various starting lineups trying to find a combination that works. Other than Poppens and Moody who have started every Big 12 game, the other three spots are up for grabs.

Texas Iowa State.
Ashley (6-4) Prins (6-7)
Anne Marie (6-3) Poppens (6-2)
Yvonne (5-7) Moody (5-8)
Ashleigh (5-8) Mansfield (5-7)
Chassidy (5-10) Wiliamson (5-11) [/pre]
Both Prins and Poppens will shoot from BTA, something the Texas defenders will need to remember. Prins and Poppens have been their most consistent scorers in Big 12 play. The defense of the Texas posts will be tested as will their ability to guard the perimeter. Williamson has been the only Cyclone that has been able to hit from BTA for ISU in league play. Chassidy and Williamson could have a shootout in this game. For ISU, they will need to be aware of Ashley’s recent scoring spree as she has hit in double figures in the last two games. Prins has height but will need quickness as well to keep up with Ashley away from the basket. Just as Prins can draw Ashley away from the basket due to her ability to hit the 3, Ashley’s ability to hit the midrange shot will open up the baseline for Texas.

ISU has built their reputation as a 3pt shooting team. In league play, 36% of their FGs attempted are threes. In comparison, Texas takes 20% of their FGs as 3s. ISU plays a slower paced game than Texas, depending on moving the ball around to get a shot off, one of three a trey. Texas relies more on fast breaking and turn overs to fuel their offense. With the emergence of Ashley’s offense, the Horns are quite capable of playing a half court game. With Ashley, Anne Marie and Nneka pounding the boards, the guards don’t have to be as conscious of rebounding and can release for a fast break basket. Texas will try to push the pace while ISU will look to slow it down. Neither team is shooting that well from the field or from BTA. Texas has a slight edge in overall FG% (36.8% to 35.7%) while ISU is a bit better from BTA, 29.0% to 24.5%. Of course, Texas takes more FGs (64.5 per game to ISU’s 49.8) while ISU is more reliant on the 3—17.3 per game to Texas’ 13.3. Neither team is doing well from the FT line (66.7% for Texas to 64.2% for ISU) but Texas has the edge in number made and attempted—12.5 of 18.8 to ISU’s 8.5 of 13.3.
For a change, ISU is more inside oriented than perimeter oriented in their offense. Texas flips that although they do have a good inside game. Texas will look for their defense inside and on the perimeter to keep ISU from getting open looks. They will be looking to force TOs to fuel fast break opportunities. Moody is a freshman PG averaging 5 TOs a game.
Game time is 8 pm this Wednesday. It will be televised on the Longhorn Network.
