This will be the first time that Texas and Grambling State have faced off. The Lady Tigers bring a 4-4 record (1-4 on the road) while Texas is at 8-2. Texas will be looking to make it four straight wins Tuesday and six home wins in a row this season. GSU is looking to get back on the winning track after having a 2 game winning streak broken last Saturday at Tulsa.
Grambling State has two players in double figures: Markisha Patterson (# 2/5. 5-8 Sr. G/F) at 12.9 ppg and Toniewshwa Mack (# 24, 5-8 Sr. G) at 10.9 ppg. Mack (57.6%), Jasher Blocker (# 13, 5-8 Sr. F; 58.3%) and Wymeka Randel (# 55, 5-11 C, 60.0%) are all hitting over 50% from the field. Patterson ( 43-90, 47.8%), Mack (34-59), Cierra Ceazer (# 4, 5-10 Fr. G, 20-57, 35.1%) and Savannah Carter (# 1, 5-7 Fr. G, 18-54, 33.3%) have all taken at least 50 shots. Patterson (7-23, 30.4%), Mack (6-16, 37.5%), Ceazer (5-15, 33.3%), Carter (3-11, 25.0%), Dayla Threatt (# 20, 5-11 Fr. G, 6-21, 28.6%) and Bre’Ann Johnson (# 3-12, 25.0%) will pulling the trigger for GSU from BTA. Those six players have taken 98 of GSU’s 114 3pters. Eight players have taken between 14 and 17 FTs for GSU, led by Threatt’s 13-14 (92.9%).
Randle, third in scoring at 8.7 ppg, leads the team with an 11.3 rpg average. Mack’s 4.8 rpg ranks second on the team. Randle has only played in 3 games. She played her first game on Dec. 15. Carter leads the team with 24 assists while Mack and Blocker each have 11 assists. Patterson’s six blocks top the Lady Tigers. Mack, Randle, Threatt, and Bianca McCowan (# 50, 6-1, Jr. C) all have two blocks each. Three players have double figures in steals: Mack (17), Carter (14) and Patterson (12).
The Lady Tigers have 15 players on the roster. All have played in at least 3 games with 7 having played in all eight games to date. Eleven are averaging at least ten minutes a game. with starters Patterson, Mack, Randle, Ceazer and Carter all averaging at least 22 minutes but none over 28 mpg.
Texas is led in scoring by three players in double figures: Chasiddy (16.9 ppg), Yvonne (11.9 ppg) and Ashleigh (11.3 ppg). Cokie leads the post players with an 8.7 ppg average. Starting with the Michigan State game, she has hit double figures the last three games, averaging 11.3 ppg. Kayla, having hit on all three FGs attempted since she started playing on Dec. 14, is at 100%. Chassidy leads all others with a 47.6% (60-126) from the field. Ashley is second at 47.4% on 18-38. Chassidy leads in 3pters made and attempted on 14-53 for a percentage of 26.4%. However, in the past three games, she has hit on 6-14 for a percentage of 43%. Ashleigh is second with 13-30 (43.3%) while Yvonne is at 9-22 (40.9%) and Chelsea at 5-19 (26.3%). Chassidy (35-39, 89.7%) Chelsea (16-19, 84.2%) and Anne Marie (12-16, 75.0%) are the top FT shooters for the Horns.
Ashley leads in two categories: rebounding (8.8 rpg) and blocks (42). Cokie (5.8 rpg) and Anne Marie (4.0 rpg) provide strong support on the boards. Cokie is second in blocks with 12. Yvonne continues to lead in assists with 47 while Ashleigh is 41. Chassidy is third with 19 while Ashley leads the posts with 11 assists. Yvonne’s 26 steals leads four others with double figure steals.
Currently, the Horns have nine healthy players with Yvonne possible for this game. Cassie has missed the last few games after last playing against Tennessee. Horns could use Yvonne and Cassie as they have just three guards without those two. Yvonne (31.8 mpg) and Chassidy (31.7 mpg) lead ten players that are averaging at least 10 mpg.
With Yvonne suffering from concussive like symptoms, Chelsea started for the first starting lineup change in the season. If Yvonne is still unable to play, Chelsea should get her second start. GSU has had six players start this season. The projected lineup for them is based on the last game.
Texas GSU
Ashley (6-4) Randle (5-11)Cokie (6-4) Patterson (5-8)Yvonne (5-7) Mack (5-8)
Ashleigh (5-8) Carter (5-7)
Chassidy (5-10) Ceazer (5-10)
GSU goes with a four guard lineup although Patterson is listed as a G/F. They will be severely undersized against Texas. Randle at 5-11 is undersized but seems to be a tough rebounder and decent scorer for the Lady Tigers. Patterson will spend a lot of time on the perimeter as she is their top 3pt threat although Mack shoots a better percentage. Bria Venson (# 34, 6-2 Fr. C) is the tallest player for GSU and averages 13 minutes a game. McCowan at 6-1 is the other post player over 6 feet that plays more than 10 minutes. Texas is likely to see if the Lady Tigers can stop Cokie and the other posts inside. That should leave the Texas guards open for the 3 as well as midrange shots as they move the ball around and inside out.

GSU is 4-4, having lost to Arkansas, Ole Miss and Tulsa with the only bad loss to Stephen F. Austin. Their average loss has been by 13 points. Their two best wins have been over LA-Monroe (75-71) and Oral Roberts (89-80) in OT. Their win over Paul Quinn (91-31) has skewed their averages. Without that, they are averaging 63 ppg while opponents are averaging 69 ppg. They are taking a shot about once a minute and about 23% of their shots are 3s. Texas has been more successful in getting post scoring in the last few games while still maintaining a strong 3pt shooting presence. That balance will make it difficult for GSU to stop the Texas scoring. Both teams get to the FT line about 20 times per game. Texas is doing a better job of converting from the FT line but not by much as Texas hits 68.5% compared to GSU’s 66.4%. Texas will pressure and run. Both teams average over 9 steals a game although GSU turns the ball over a bit more. Where Texas will cause a lot of problems for the Lady Tigers is inside where Texas, led by Ashley, will present a blocking presence GSU has not seen this season.
Game time is set for 7:08 pm and will be shown on the Longhorn Network. KVET 1300 AM will carry the radio broadcast.
