This game is the WBCA Pink Zone game to help raise awareness of breast cancer. Don’t forget to wear your pink Texas shirt. Pink pom poms will be available as will breast health educational packets. If I recall correctly from last season, players will be wearing pink trimmed uniforms or pink uniforms and pink laces on their shoes.

Both Texas(13-7) and Colorado (11-8) are 2-4 in league play. While Texas has won their last two, Colorado has gone 1-1, including a loss this past Wednesday to KSU, 59-72. A review of common foes to date shows three: Missouri, A&M, and OSU. Both lost to A&M. Texas beat OSU while CU lost to OSU. Texas lost to Missouri while CU won their game against MU.

Common foes:
Texas: @Missouri, L 80-85 (OT); vs A&M, L 65-80; vs OSU, W 63-56
Tech:; @ A&M, L 57-85; @ OSU, L 49-58; vs Missouri, W 58-48

Texas and Colorado are tied with Missouri for 7th place in the league standing heading into the weekend. With Missouri playing ISU and Tech going against Nebraska, the winner of the Texas-CU game could end up as high as 5th after Sunday. Lone possession of 7th place is also a possibility.

Texas will take a two game winning streak against the Buffs into Sunday’s game. The 52-67 loss on Feb. 16, 2008 was the first one since Feb. 19, 2000.

Coming home: Johanna Pointer, first year assistant coach at Colorado. She played at Texas from 1988 to 1992. She is still in the records at 10th in career 3pts attempted (294) and made (101). She’s 4th in highest season 3pt % at 43.9% (29-66).

Colorado has two sets of twins on their roster: sophs 6-2 Meagan Malcolm-Peck and 6-2 Brianna Malcolm-Peck, who has not played this season, likely due to injury; and frosh Ashley Wilson (5-8) and Brittany Wilson (5-8). Ashley and Meagan, the second born, are having better statistical seasons than their older sisters.

Colorado has three players averaging double digit figures in scoring: Brittany Spears (# 22, 6-1 Sr. F) at 18.7 ppg; Chucky Jeffery (# 23, 5-10 Soph. G) at 13.8 ppg and Brittany Wilson (# 11, 5-8 Fr. G) at 10.2 ppg. While five Buffaloes have taken at least 16 3s in league play, Spears (15-37) has doubled the next closest in 3s made and attempted. Meagan Malcolm-Peck (# 14, 6-2 Soph. G/F) has made 8 of 18 3s (44.4%). B. Wilson (6-18, 33.3%), Chelsea Dale (# 21, 6-1 Sr. F; 4-18, 22.2%) and Brittney Blythe (# 4, 5-9 Sr. G; 6-16, 37.5%) are the other 3pt threats for the Buffs. The three top scorers for Colorado have taken 53 of the 80 FTs the Buffs have in Big 12 play. Only Spears (17-20, 85.0%) is really making opponents pay for putting her on the line. Jeffery (6-15, 40.0%) and B. Wilson (9-18, 50.0%) are having trouble at the FT line. In addition to leading the team in scoring (18.7 ppg), minutes played (35.3 mpg), FGs made/attempted (40-100), 3pters made/attempted (15-37), and FTs made/attempted (17-20), Spears leads in rebs (9.5 rpg), blocks (9), and is second in steals (11). In other words, she makes the Buffs go. Spears (9.5 rpg) , Julie Seabrook (# 15, 6-3 Jr. F; 7.7 rpg) and Jeffery (7.5 rpg) help make Colorado the third best rebounding team in the league.

There are ten players listed on the CU roster. With Brianna Malcolm-Peck not playing, they have nine active players. All nine have played. Spears (35.3 mpg), Seabrook (30.2 mpg), Jeffery (29.5 mpg) and B. Wilson (29.2 mpg) are getting lots of minutes. M. Malcolm-Peck (21.7 mpg), Dale (25.5 mpg) and Blythe (24.5 mpg) are the other three getting at least 20 minutes per game. Of the other two, Rachel Hargis (# 6-4, Fr. C) is averaging 10.2 minutes in six games while Ashley Wilson (# 12, 5-8 Fr. G) has played in five of six conference games and is averaging 9.8 minutes per game. Spears, Seabrook, and B. Wilson have started all six conference games. Jeffery and M. Malcolm-Peck joined them in the starting lineup for the first two games. Dale and Blythe have started the last four Big 12 games with Spears, Seabrook and B. Wilson.Horns are led by Chassidy (21.5 ppg), Kat (12.0 ppg) and Ashleigh (10.7 ppg). Four others average between 4.7 and 6.7 ppg. Chassidy has been the most accurate 3pt shooter for the Horns in Big 12 play, hitting 16-40 (40.0%). Kat (8-27, 29.6%), Ashleigh (3-18, 16.7%) and Chelsea (4-11, 36.4%) are the other players that have taken at least 10 3s. Yvonne at 37.5% (3-8), has the second highest 3pt shooting percentage in league play for the team. The three players that opponents don’t want to see on the FT line: Chassidy (27-29, 93.1%), Kat (10-12, 83.3%) and Kristen (12-15, 80.0%). Kat leads the team in rebounding at 9.2 rpg. She gets plenty of support from Chassidy (5.5 rpg), Ashleigh (6.7 rpg), Kristen (4.8 rpg) and Ashley (4.8 rpg). Texas is ranked first in rebounding in the league with an average of 44.0 rpg. Ashleigh and Yvonne are one and two in assists with 20 and 13, respectively. Both Chassidy and Kat have nine assists in league play. Ashley has 25 blocks while Chassidy and Kristen are second with 4 blocks each. While no player has reached double digits in steals, Ashleigh has nine steals, Chassidy 8 and Yvonne 7.
There are 11 players on the roster. Nine have played in Big 12 games while 8 have played in all six league games. Chassidy (33.5 mpg), Kat (37.2) and Ashleigh (34.5 mpg) are all averaging over 33 minutes a game. Five others average over 11 minutes a game.

Texas CU

Kat (6-2) Spears (6-1)
Kristen (6-3) Seabrook (6-3)
Chelsea (5-10) Dale ( 6-1)
Chassidy (5-10) B. Wilson (5-8)
Ashleigh (5-8) Blythe (5-9)

It’s quite likely that Kat and Spears will be going at each other since both appear to play the four. Both shoot well from BTA and FT line, both are strong rebounders, and score in double figures. Kat is distributing the ball a bit better while Spears is better at stealing it. Kristen and Ashley should give the Horns an advantage inside. Seabrook has not been a scorer in Big 12 play but is a strong rebounder. M. Malcolm-Peck is a better scorer while frosh Hargis is still finding her footing in league play. Horns will need to clamp down on Spears and Jefferies. Shut down Spears, and you have shut down a third of the Buffs offense. If Horns can get 20+ points from Kristen and Ashley, it will make things easier for the rest. For Colorado, they will be looking to shut down Chassidy. Blythe is the designed defensive stopper for CU. She is likely to match up with Chassidy. This should be another player battle that should be worth paying attention to as the game goes on.

Horns are averaging over 70 ppg with three of their top four scorers hitting less than 40% of their FGs. Imagine if they were all able to hit 40+%. Colorado actually matches up well with Texas in FG% and 3pts made/attempted/%. They just don’t average as many made during a game. They seem to play slower than the Horns and don’t get as many shots off. The Buffs have not gotten to the FT line much during league play and do poorly when they get there. One thing they will do is challenge the Horns on the boards. Spears vs Kat should be an awesome battle to watch. Our other posts will need to work hard to keep Seabrook off the boards. TOs will be a key item. Colorado’s Spears and B. Wilson are very good at getting steals. Texas has dropped off in this category in league play. Ball handling will need to be a focus for the Horns. One area where the Horns have a big advantage is blocks. CU doesn’t block many shots. Texas is the second best team in the league in blocking shots. Ashley has been on a tear in the last two games against OSU and Tech as she has blocked six shots in each game. She ranks less than half a block behind BU’s Griner in blocked shots per game (4.17 to 4.60).

Don’t forget that San Jacinto will be closed until 2 pm. Park there before 2pm when it opens and you could find yourself wondering what happened to your car. Cars parked on San Jacinto between the hours of 7 am and 2 pm Sunday will be relocated to Lot 70/99 at the owner’s expense.

AAS preview.

Forgot that the 1986 NCAA champs will be honored at halftime.
AAS has a short story on where they are now.

AAS also has a story recapping the championship season. IIRC, Horns beat USC twice that year, including that final game.

Thanks for the links to the AAS articles. I still think Clarissa is the greatest player ever. After she exploded that knee at the Orange Bowl tournament, no one thought she would play again. I saw her the next year at TCU where she came out of no where to take a charge. Crowd gasped. People stood. Davis was back on her feet in a flash without using her hands to push herself up. She looked at Jody and said "works everytime". Jody just shook her head in disbelief. It all seems like a million midnights ago. The memories that create the Longhorn Nation.

19 pts and 12 rebounds from our three posts: Kristen, Ashley and Anne Marie. Two impressive offensive contributions in a row from our posts. Nice complimentary job to our perimeter scorers. Kristen's 10 rebounds were a career and season high.

Good D from the Horns. CU shot 44.7% from the field but 20 TOs limited their shots. CU's Seabrook had nine pts in the first half to pace the Buffs but was limited to only 1 FT in the second half. Spears led the Buffs in scoring with 16 but added at least 6 pts very late it the game after it was basically over. Kristen did a very good job on Spears with some assistance from others.

yes, and 10 of the 12 rebounds were Kristen's....she just continues to be terrific!

A very balanced game...Fussell is a gold nugget...would love to see her get ESPN FPOY!

I just watched the replay of the game. At the end of the game Kevin ? and Dan Hughes (announcers) interviewed Chas. She is such a confident, delightful, and articulate young lady!

C.Fussell play and carry herself, like a Junior in College. I just thank God she came to Texas. I expect to see next year, at least 2 players on her level of play in the 2011 Class.

Rexy I saw that same interview. She is absolutely fantastic. So matter of fact. "When they change their defense, I will change my offense" and "I play my game the same no matter who I am playing against. I don't play any differently against the worst player in the league than I would against the best player in the nation."

She clearly loves being at Texas and being coached by G. She said that we have the best facilities in the nation.

Love her.

Don't think Seabrook was hurt. She was taken out in the first half when she got two fouls. She played quite a bit in the second as part of their rotation.
