Texas vs. Baylor

The final Big 12 series of the season has Texas in Waco to play the Baylor Bears. Both teams have had less than memorable seasons so far. The only objective left is to qualify for the Big 12 Tournament, then win it, if either team wants to continue playing.

Texas needs a win to make it to Tulsa, or other combinations, but a win would make it official. Baylor probably needs a couple of wins to get in, but if Kansas gets swept by Kansas State, they could get in with one.

Parker French, the senior will get the start today as usual, in the first game of a series.

The game is televised by Fox Sports Southwest and the audio is

Lineups are next.

This will be an odd game in that Ben Johnson is suspended. He was thrown out of the last game against Tech. Then the next game was rained out, so it's in effect, for this game.

Taylor Stell, will replace Johnson, in left field today.

Pitching will a hodgepodge of different arms, with the Big 12 Tourney looking on the horizon. French will start, but he won't pitch that long, no pitcher will, as arms will try be saved.

Weather will be an issue in this series. Today's game will have a nice window to get it in. Tomorrow could be iffy, with thunderstorms in the forecast all day.

Drew Tolson, a right hander will get the start today for Baylor. He completes his warm up tosses, and we are ready for baseball.

This is one of those games, being broadcast using the webcast people from the home school. TCU and OU do this too and Fox SW broadcasts them. So it's Baylor's announcers, keep that in mind.

So after a week off, we have baseball again on Hornfans.

Joe Baker, the DH today, leads off, for Texas, batting right handed.
He grounds a single up the middle, for a lead runner.

Shaw up batting lefty, with one on.
He bunts and the 1-3 sac is good, one away, Baker to second.

Hinojosa bats righty, with a man on second, one down.
A pitch in the dirt and Baker takes third, on what is wild pitch.
Hinjosa sends a ground ball through, on the left side, for a rbi single.

Texas leads 1-0.

Barrera, at first today, bats righty, with one on and one down.
Another pitch, in the dirt, Hinojosa goes and he slides much to early and pays for it, out at second. Looked like he would make it easily.

Naturally Barrera, bloops a single to center, on the next pitch.

Cantu bats righty, with one on and two away.
A ground ball to second goes 4-6, for a force, to retire the side.

Texas gets one, might have been more. Horns 1-0, as Baylor comes to bat.

Parker French, the right handed senior, warms up and is expected to only go two innings today, as the arms are being saved, as mentioned above.

Logan Brown, the Bear center fielder, leads off batting right handed.
A flair to center drops in front of Gurwitz, for a lead single.

The right fielder, Adam Toth, bats lefty, with one on.
A ground ball up the middle is snagged by Hinojosa, his glove flip starts a very nifty 6-4-3 twin killing, for two outs.

Righty hitter Wendal Duncan, the third baseman, bats with two away.
A ground ball to short goes 6-3, to end the inning.

Texas leads 1-0, after an inning of play.

Another wild pitch, Marlow to third, as it's a carbon copy of the first inning so far.
A high curve on a full count pitch and the walk puts two aboard.

Stell bats righty, with two on and one out.
Coach is out for Baylor, now returns to the third base dugout.
Stell back in the box and runners on the corners.
A soft liner to second, off the fists, is a big second out.

Baker hits again, at the top of the order, needs a knock to score another run.
He grounds to the right of the shortstop and he makes a sliding stop and comes up throwing to second for a 6-4 force, to retire the side.

Good opportunity goes wanting and it's Texas ahead 1-0, bottom of two.

French out for the second and maybe his last inning of work, depending on pitch count, he could go one more.

The left fielder, Cameron Esthay, leads off batting righty.
A long drive to right center and it just drops over the fence, for a homer.

Game tied 1-1.

Mitch Price, the first baseman, bats righty.
He K's swinging on the sinker, the 2-3 play completes the strikeout.

Baylor ties it up on the long ball, tied 1-1, after two.

Tolson comes out for the Bears again to pitch.

Shaw leads off batting lefty, for Texas.
Shaw gets all of a fast ball and it goes way beyond the center field fence and may have rolled into the Brazos River, if the tall wet grass didn't stop it short.

Texas leads 2-1.

Hinojosa, bats righty.
He sends a long drive to left and it clears with ease and goes just under the scoreboard. Another dinger, for back to back jacks.

Texas leads 3-1.

Barrera bats righty, still nobody out.
A ground ball behind the bag at third, a sliding over the shoulder stop and a long two hop throw, gets him at first, nice play.

Cantu bats righty, with one down.

Head coach back out to the mound, Smith is in big trouble in Baylor and this could be his last season there.

He calls for another hurler.

Pitching change.

The new Bear pitcher is Brad Kuntz, who is recovering now from what seems almost routine Tommy John surgery. It still is a long recovery process, of usually over a year.

The lefty is in to face the lefty hitting Boswell, two runners on and two outs.
Boswell has not done well against the southpaws and most teams know this.
He K's swinging, to retire the side.

A rare Texas power surge and the back to back homers by Shaw and Hinjosa, give Texas a 3-1 lead, to the bottom of three.

French is done and Ty Culbreth, the lefty will come in for a few innings.

Baylor shortstop Justin Arrington, leads off, batting left handed.
A little roller to first and the play goes 3-1, as Culbreth takes the throw.

He gets jammed big time again and this time he sends a soft liner to first, one down.

Baker back again, brings the top of the lineup, batting righty, with one out.
A full count and line shot on a hop goes off the third baseman, into shallow left.
It's a single and that's why it's called the "hot corner."

Shaw up batting lefty, he had a long homer his last at bat, off Tolson. This time it's a lefty pitcher and he has had trouble all season against them.
Like Boswell before him, he also K's swinging, on fast ball.

Hinojosa bats righty with a man on and two gone.
He has two hits in two trips, his last was a homer to left.
Baker goes and didn't get a good jump, a high fast ball makes it an easy throw and Baker is nailed at second, to end the frame.

Esthay, bats lefty, with one out.
His homer is the only Bear run today.
A liner goes to center for a single, for his second hit.

Price bats righty, with one on and one down.
A two hopper to Boswell and he can't decide whether to go to second and then goes to first and it's way high and over Barrera. The E-5 put the tying runs in scoring position.

Menard bats righty, with two on and one down.
A fly ball to center is too shallow to score the run and it's two outs.

Sheppard bats righty, with two still in scoring position and now two away.
A off speed pitch gets him swinging and that retires the side and makes the error meaningless.

Side down in order and Texas leads halfway through the first game of series, 3-1.

Culbreth back for probably his last inning, works the Bear fifth.

Arrington leads off batting lefty.
He bunts and Culbreth fields it and has no play, it's an infield hit. The drag bunt was placed well.

Ducoff bats righty, with one on.
A ground ball to second and Marlow tries to tag the runner going to second and drops the ball, the throw to first is late, it's another Texas error.

Top of the order is Brown, batting lefty, with two on now after the E-4.

Kansas loses 6-4 and Texas is in the Big 12 Tournament.

Brown bunts and Cantu fields and the throw is late, to load the bases, on another infield hit.

Skip out and he tries to settle down Culbreth, tough inning for him, so far.

Toth bats lefty, with the bases loaded, no outs.
He single by Marlow into right field. Two runs score, the throw is cut off and the throw to second gets away and another run scores. It's another error, this time for Hinojosa.

Marlow leads off, batting lefty, for Texas.
A fly ball to left is one away.

Gurwitz bats righty, with one down.
A liner to center is a single.

Baker, the lead off man, bats righty, with two on and two down.
A chance to at least tie the game, with hit to the outfield.
He takes a fast ball on the inside corner, the backwards K, retires the side.

Two stranded and it keeps Baylor ahead 4-3, bottom of the sixth.

Embarassing. This team looks like they are pissed they have to play in the conference tournament.

Win or lose, Augie should resign now. The players don't want to play for him.

Connor Mayes, the freshman right hander, comes in to pitch the Baylor half of the sixth.

Menard leads off, batting righty, for Baylor.
A pop to shallow right and Marlow backs on it and has it.

Sheppard bats righty, with one out.
He walks, to put a man on.

Arrington bats lefty, with one on and one down.
The runner goes and on a pitch out he stops and the throw goes into center. Then Gurwitz just lazily goes after the ball and he heads to third. Two more Texas errors on that play. One on Marlow missing the throw, and then one on Gurwitz. Five errors now for the Horns. Gurwitz should be pulled for that play.
Arrington singles to center and the run scores.

Baylor leads 5-3.

Texas is falling apart in the field.

A wild pitch sends the runner to second.
A fast ball on the outside corner is a called strike three, for two outs.

Brown, at the top of the order, bats righty, with one on and two down.
A ground ball to short and that retires the side.

Baylor adds a run and Texas is playing bad and dumb right now. So the Bears lead 5-3, after six.

Theron Kay, a right hander comes in to pitch the seventh for Baylor. Kuntz shut Texas down, especially the lefty hitters.

Shaw leads off for Texas batting lefty, he is glad Kuntz is gone.
He lines a single to right and the right fielder boots it, to allow him to go to second. An error on the right fielder. Ugly baseball.

Hinojosa bats righty, with one on.
A foul pop down the right field foul line and the second baseman comes over, like he should and makes the catch.

Barrera bats righty, with one down and one on.
A fly ball to center is two away.

Cantu bats righty, with a man on second and two outs.
A jam shot goes to short on the fly and that retires the side.

Texas wastes the lead runner, as they stretch in Waco and look to make the Big 12 Tournament, Baylor leads 5-3.

On an unrelated but positive note about the Horns, on LHN Vince Young has UT ahead of USC in the 3rd quarter of the 2006 Rose Bowl 23-17.

Mayes stays in to pitch the seventh for Texas.

Toth leads off, batting lefty.
A drive to right down toward the line and Jake McKenzie makes a long run and has it, just short of the foul line. He came in to the game, Shaw moved to center.

A fly to shallow leftn and Hinjosa ranges out and makes the play, to end the inning.

Seven played and Baylor leads 5-3.

Kay remains in the game and will pitch the eighth. Dodson comes in to play first for Baylor.

Marlow leads off batting lefty.
A long fly ball to right center and the center fielder keeps going back and has it on the edge of the track, for one out.

Jake McKenzie, had a very nice play in right field, gets his first at bat, from the right side. He came in for Gurwitz, when he just got lazy in center and allowed a runner to go to third.
He walks and continues to do good things, he is of course usually a pitcher.

Coach out and a pitching change.

Sean Spicer, a right hander, comes in to pitch for Baylor.

Boswell bats lefty and he is glad they didn't bring in a lefty to face him, I thought they would.
He faces Spicer, with a man on and one down.
Another long drive to right, carried by the wind, is caught just short of the fence, for two outs.

Kacy Clemens will pinch hit for Texas, as I guess the Horns hope for a blast to tie the game. He bats for Stell, who had a hit today.
He walks on four pitches, to put two on.

Baker, bats righty, at the top of the order, where Johnson would have been usually.
He has two on and two outs.
A liner to left and it's a single, the left fielder just holds the ball and the run scores.

Texas gets one back and Baylor leads 5-4, bottom of eight.

Mayes stays on the hill, for Texas in the eighth.
Travis Jones comes into the game in left field, for the Horns.

Sheppard leads off batting righty, for Baylor.
A fly ball to center and Shaw misjudged it and it drops for a single, for some reason, the runner went to second, I think he thought no one would cover the bag.
Mayes alertly covered and the throw is in time, for the rare 8-1 put out.
The runner is up and jawing at Mayes, for putting down a knee, on the tag.

Skip out and that's all for Mayes, but nice tag and block of second Connor.

Kirby Bellow, the lefty, comes in to pitch for the Horns.

He faces lefty hitting Arrington, with one down.
He walks on a full count pitch, to reach.

Steven McClean will pinch hit, batting righty.
A chopper up the middle and Marlow has it, goes to second, but the relay is late to first. The 4-6 force is two outs.

Brown bats righty once more, at the top of the order, with one on and two down.
A slow roller to first and Barrera takes it to the bag for the 3U, that ends the inning.

Last call for Texas in the ninth, Baylor leads 5-4.
