Baylor comes to Austin Saturday for the first game between the Lady Bears (21-1, 11-0) and the Longhorns (9-12, 2-8) this season. Baylor is riding a 19 game winning streak while Texas is coming a home loss to ISU this past Wednesday. Texas leads the series 57-25 but has lost four in a row since sweeping the Lady Bears in the spring of 2010.
Led by Brittney Griner (# 42, 6-8 Sr. P), Baylor has three players averaging double ppg: Griner’s 25.6 ppg, Odyssey Sims (# 0, 5-8 Jr. G) at 11.9 ppg and Brooklyn Pope (# 32, 6-1, Grad. F/P) at 11.4 ppg. Griner (118-198, 59.6%), Pope (49-98, 50.0%) and Destiny Williams (# 10, 6-1 Sr. F/P; 29-56, 51.8%). Sims is the other main shooting threat with 49-106 (46.2%) from the field. Three of the other four players that average double digit minutes are making at least 45% of their FGs. Sims (11-29, 37.9%) is the main 3pt threat for Baylor. Three others are hitting at least 36% of their shots: Jordan Madden (# 3, 6-0 Sr. G; 8-21, 38.1%), Alexis Prince (# 12, 6-1 Fr. G; 7-14, 50.0%) and Makenzie Robertson (# 14, 5-9 Jr. G; 4-11, 36.4%). Madden (15-20, 75.0%) is the only Lady Bear that breaks 70% on FTs. Griner (46-70, 65.7%) is the one that gets to the FT line the most . Pope at 27-44 (61.4%) is second on FTs made & attempted.
Griner’s 9.9 rpg leads three others that average at least five and a half rpg. These players are Williams (6.5 rpg), Pope (5.8 rpg) and Kimetria Hayden (# 1, 6-0 Sr. G; 5.5 rpg). Sims (64 assists) and Hayden (57 assists) top the Lady Bears in assists while Griner is third with 30. Griner has 49 blocks with no other Lady Bear blocking more than seven. Four players average at least one steal per game with Sims’ total of 32 leading the way by almost double the total of Madden’s 18 which ranks second.
Griner and Sims are the only players averaging over 30 mpg with Griner tops at 33.7 mpg. A total of eight players average double figure in mpg. Seven have played in all 11 Big 12 games with two others getting in ten games. Four others have played in at least 8 games. Griner, Sims, Madden and Hayden have started all 11 league games. Pope has started ten games with Williams starting in the one game Pope did not.
Nneka (12.4 ppg), Chassidy (12.1 ppg) and Imani (10.8 ppg) lead the Horns in scoring. Nneka (45-100, 45.0%), Chassidy (37.108, 35.3%), Imani (42-96, 43.8%) and Empress (30-88, 34.1%) are the most likely to take a shot for the Horns. From the BTA, the main shooters for Texas are Chassidy (14-58, 24.1%), Gigi (6-22, 27.3%), Empress (3-16, 18.8%) and Brady (2-14, 14.3%). Imani (24-32, 75.0%), Nneka (22-31, 71.0%) and Brady (13-15, 86.7%) are the players getting to the FT line the most for the Horns.
Imani (8.8 rpg) and Nneka (8.2 rpg) top the Horns in rebounding. Chassidy (6.1 rpg) and Empress (4.2 rpg) provide support on the boards. Four Horns have reached double figures in assists: Empress (26), Celina (25), Chassidy (15) and Imani (11). Imani’s 23 blocks leads the team with Chassidy second with five. Four Horns are in double digit steals: Nneka (15), Chassidy (13), Celina (12) and Brady (10).
Chassidy (35.6 mpg), Empress (32.9 mpg) and Nneka (32.3 mpg) all average over 32 mpg. Six others that have played in at least eight games average between 12 and 27 mpg. Seven players have started at least one Big 12 game. Nneka, Imani, Chassidy, Empress and Celina started the last game.
Projected starting lineups, based on the last game played:
[pre]
Texas Baylor
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Pope (6-1 Grad. F/P)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Griner (6-8 Sr. P)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Hayden (6-0 Sr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Sims (5-8 Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Madden (6-0 Sr. G) [/pre]
Horns had trouble with ISU’s posts. Baylor will present another level altogether. No team has managed to slow down Griner without at least doubling down on her which allows her to find either a post cutting to the basket for a layup or a guard open on the perimeter for a 3. Sims is the youngest starter on the Baylor lineup, a three year starter as a junior. Horns will start three frosh and one soph. Horns can’t forget their defensive assignments or Baylor will take advantage of them. For Baylor, the defensive focus will be on denying Chassidy any open looks. Empress and Celina will need to step up like they did in the ISU game. Nneka and Imani will need to be tough but will need to stay out of foul trouble as their backups have even less experience than they do.
Team stats are for Big 12 games only:

On paper, Baylor wins this game easily. It remains to be seen if Texas can play with Baylor and force a close game that could swing either way at the end. Both teams will run. Baylor does not keep teams from taking shots, usually quick shots early in the shot clock. They are able to shut down drives into the paint due to the presence of Griner and her ability to block shots with minimal fouling. This tends to cause teams to rely on shooting treys or in playing faster than they may want to get a shot off before Griner can get back on D. For the Horns, their ability to hit the mid range shot will be critical. If Griner comes out to attempt to block that shot, Horns will need to win the rebound battle and make the shot off offensive rebounds. Preferably, they will make the mid range and 3pters. What they cannot do is follow their tendency to dig themselves into a hole in the first half as Baylor tends to bury teams in the first half.
