Texas comes into this game at 1-2 after having gotten their first conference win at A&M. Baylor is tied for the top of the conference with KSU at 3-0. Texas holds a 57-23 edge in the series. Texas swept the league series in 2009-10 while Baylor did the same in 201-11. Texas will be looking to even up their Big 12 record at 2-2 while Baylor seeks to remain on top by leaving Austin with a 4-0 league record. Two of the best shotblockers in the nation will be the floor in Brittney Griner for Baylor and Ashley Gayle for Texas.
Baylor has two players in double figures in league play: Brittney Griner (#42, 6-8 Jr. P; 22.7 ppg) and Odyssey Sims (#0, 5-9 Soph. G; 15.0 ppg). Kimetria “Nae-Nae” Hayden (#1, 6-0 Jr. G) adds 9.0 ppg. Among the seven players that average over 10 minutes per game in league play, Griner (26-51, 51.0%) and Sims (17-29, 58.6%) are the ones that are over 50% from the field. Brooklyn Pope (#32, 6-2 RS Jr. F/P) has hit both her shots for a percentage of 100. She has been out since the first Big 12 game due to an injury and might be back tonight. Hayden (10-23, 43.5%), Jordan Madden (#3, 6-0 Jr. G; 9-25, 36.0%), Destiny Williams (#10, 6-1 RS Jr. F/P; 9-23, 39.1%) and Terran Condrey (#20, 5-7 Sr. G; 4-13, 30.8%) are the other Lady Bears that have taken over 10 shots in league play. From BTA, Sims (8-16, 50.0%) is the biggest threat. Hayden (4-10, 40.0%) is another excellent 3pt shooter while Madden (3-13, 23.1%) is the other Lady Bear that has taken at least 10 treys in Big 12 games. Off the bench, Makenzie Robertson (#10, 5-10 Soph. G) has hit 1 of 2 treys. Griner has been the FT line the most of any Lady Bear in league play, hitting 16 of 19 for 84.2%. Sims (3-3, 100%), Williams (5-5, 100%), Condrey (1-1, 100%) and Madden (4-5, 80.0%) are other Lady Bears over 70% from the FT line.
Williams leads with 10.3 rpg while Griner adds 8.7 rpg and Madden 5.3 rpg. Three Lady Bears are in double digits in assists, led by Hayden with 16. Sims has 14 and Madden 10. Griner has 20 blocks while Williams has 7. Three others have one block each. Sims’ 10 steals tops the team while Hayden and Williams each has 5 steals.
Baylor has 13 players listed on their roster. Mariah Chandler and Shanay Washington have yet to play this season. Washington, recovering from an ACL injury, was projected to be ready to play by the start of conference play but has not yet seen the court. Pope is recovering from a calf injury and has missed the last two games. She is projected to be back either for this game or the one in the middle of next week. Of the ten players that have played in the last two conference games, six are averaging over 10 minutes a game. Only Ashley Fields (#24, 6-2 Fr. P) and Sune Agbuke (#22, 6-4 Fr. P) have played in all three conference games. Fields averages 7 mpg while Agbuke is at 4.7 mpg. Robertson and Lindsay Palmer (#25, 5-11 Sr. G) each is averaging 6.5 mpg. Starters Griner (36.3 mpg), Sims (34.0 mpg), Hayden (30.3 mpg), Jordan (30.0 mpg) and Williams (27.7 mpg) are playing a lot of minutes with Condrey (17.3 mpg) the lone reserve getting significant playing time.
Texas is led by Chassidy (14.0 ppg) and Ashleigh (13.7 ppg). Ashley (8.7 ppg) and Cokie (7.3 ppg) are third and fourth in scoring. As close as those two are in scoring, they are in FGs made and attempted with Chassidy going 14-43 (32.6%) and Ashleigh (16-42 (38.1%). Ashley (12-24), Nneka (4-8) and Kayla (1-2) are all hitting 50% of their FGs. Cokie (10-25, 40.0%), Chelsea (5-13, 38.5%), Yvonne (7-23, 30.4%) and Anne Marie (4-12, 33.3%) all have double digit FG attempts. Chassidy (4-17, 23.5%) and Chelsea (4-9, 44.4) top the team in 3pters made. Ashleigh (2-7, 28.6%) and Yvonne (1-7, 14.3%) are the other Horns that have attempted a 3 in league play. Every Horn except for Kayla has gotten to the FT line at least 4 times. Chassidy tops the team in FTs made and attempted (10-12, 83.3%). Ashleigh’s 87.5% (7-8) is the best on the team for conference play. Anne Marie at 4-5, 80.0% is the only other Horn over 67%.Ashley, Cokie, Chassidy and Nneka rank one through four in rebounding at 7.7 rpg, 7.0 rpg, 6.0 rpg & 5.3 rpg, respectively. Yvonne’s 21 assists tops the team. Ashleigh with six is second. Ashley has eight blocks while Cokie and Anne Marie have 3 each. Ashley also leads the team in steals with 9 while Chassidy has five and Yvonne and Ashleigh each has four steals.
Horns have 14 players listed on their roster. Four are out due injury or illness. Of the ten currently able to play, nine have played in the three league games. Eight of those are averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Only Chassidy (32.7 mpg) and Ashleigh (32.0 mpg) are averaging over 30 mpg. Ashley (26.7 mpg), Cokie (23.0 mpg), Chelsea (24.7 mpg) and Yvonne (29.7 mpg) are at over 20 mpg. Anne Marie (14.0 mpg) and Nneka (13.3 mpg) are the key post players off the bench. Kayla has played in all three games, averaging 4 mpg.
Projected starting lineups are based on the last game.

Yvonne(5-7) Sims(5-9)
Ashleigh(5-8) Hayden(6-0)
Chassidy(5-10) Madden(6-0) [/pre]
Texas will have to stop two of the nation’s best at their position in Griner and Sims. Williams and Pope, if she plays, benefit from the double and triple teams that Griner draws as she is effective at getting them the ball when they cut to the basket. For Baylor, they will need to stop Chassidy with either Hayden or Madden while looking for Griner to stop forays into the paint and keeping an eye on the Texas posts. Before the A&M game, that would mean shading towards Cokie but they will have to worry that Ashley will have another big offensive game if that happens. The Texas guards will need to hit from mid range and from BTA to complement the inside scoring. Pressure on Sims will be important to keep her from making easy passes to Griner. And the Texas posts will need to body Griner from her favorite spots in the paint where she can just raise up and shoot. This could be a blockfest as Griner ranks #1 nationally at 5.4 bpg and Ashley fourth at 3.7 bpg.

Baylor is running over Big 12 teams to the tune of 27.7 ppg. They capitalize on all areas scoring, shooting well overall (46.2%), from BTA (36.2%), inside the 3pt line (49.6%) and from the FT line (80.5%). They are averaging just a bit less in rebounding average than Texas but hold a plus11 rebounding edge over opponents. They move the ball around well, averaging 21.7 assists a game on 28 shots made per game. That’s an assist on almost 4 of every 5 shots made. Against A&M, Texas relied on their balanced scoring from the posts and guards. While that hasn’t always worked, that inside threat has helped to get the perimeter players clear shots. The posts, especially Ashley’s, output in the last game has to something that Baylor has to be concerned about.
A Texas win will depend on making it difficult for Griner to score by not allowing her to get to her favorite spots and by making difficult to get a pass inside to her. Strong on the ball defense on Sims will also help twofold: make it hard for Sims to get a pass inside to Griner and make it hard for her to score herself. Yvonne will probably start off on her but Ashley and Chelsea may also see action against her. Horns will need to hit their open shots and free throws. Which makes it important for Chassidy to be able to get to the FT line. This looks to be another physical game inside. For Baylor, keeping Griner and Sims out of foul trouble is critical to their chances for winning.
