Texas comes into this game at 1-2 after having gotten their first conference win at A&M. Baylor is tied for the top of the conference with KSU at 3-0. Texas holds a 57-23 edge in the series. Texas swept the league series in 2009-10 while Baylor did the same in 201-11. Texas will be looking to even up their Big 12 record at 2-2 while Baylor seeks to remain on top by leaving Austin with a 4-0 league record. Two of the best shotblockers in the nation will be the floor in Brittney Griner for Baylor and Ashley Gayle for Texas.

Baylor has two players in double figures in league play: Brittney Griner (#42, 6-8 Jr. P; 22.7 ppg) and Odyssey Sims (#0, 5-9 Soph. G; 15.0 ppg). Kimetria “Nae-Nae” Hayden (#1, 6-0 Jr. G) adds 9.0 ppg. Among the seven players that average over 10 minutes per game in league play, Griner (26-51, 51.0%) and Sims (17-29, 58.6%) are the ones that are over 50% from the field. Brooklyn Pope (#32, 6-2 RS Jr. F/P) has hit both her shots for a percentage of 100. She has been out since the first Big 12 game due to an injury and might be back tonight. Hayden (10-23, 43.5%), Jordan Madden (#3, 6-0 Jr. G; 9-25, 36.0%), Destiny Williams (#10, 6-1 RS Jr. F/P; 9-23, 39.1%) and Terran Condrey (#20, 5-7 Sr. G; 4-13, 30.8%) are the other Lady Bears that have taken over 10 shots in league play. From BTA, Sims (8-16, 50.0%) is the biggest threat. Hayden (4-10, 40.0%) is another excellent 3pt shooter while Madden (3-13, 23.1%) is the other Lady Bear that has taken at least 10 treys in Big 12 games. Off the bench, Makenzie Robertson (#10, 5-10 Soph. G) has hit 1 of 2 treys. Griner has been the FT line the most of any Lady Bear in league play, hitting 16 of 19 for 84.2%. Sims (3-3, 100%), Williams (5-5, 100%), Condrey (1-1, 100%) and Madden (4-5, 80.0%) are other Lady Bears over 70% from the FT line.

Williams leads with 10.3 rpg while Griner adds 8.7 rpg and Madden 5.3 rpg. Three Lady Bears are in double digits in assists, led by Hayden with 16. Sims has 14 and Madden 10. Griner has 20 blocks while Williams has 7. Three others have one block each. Sims’ 10 steals tops the team while Hayden and Williams each has 5 steals.

Baylor has 13 players listed on their roster. Mariah Chandler and Shanay Washington have yet to play this season. Washington, recovering from an ACL injury, was projected to be ready to play by the start of conference play but has not yet seen the court. Pope is recovering from a calf injury and has missed the last two games. She is projected to be back either for this game or the one in the middle of next week. Of the ten players that have played in the last two conference games, six are averaging over 10 minutes a game. Only Ashley Fields (#24, 6-2 Fr. P) and Sune Agbuke (#22, 6-4 Fr. P) have played in all three conference games. Fields averages 7 mpg while Agbuke is at 4.7 mpg. Robertson and Lindsay Palmer (#25, 5-11 Sr. G) each is averaging 6.5 mpg. Starters Griner (36.3 mpg), Sims (34.0 mpg), Hayden (30.3 mpg), Jordan (30.0 mpg) and Williams (27.7 mpg) are playing a lot of minutes with Condrey (17.3 mpg) the lone reserve getting significant playing time.

Texas is led by Chassidy (14.0 ppg) and Ashleigh (13.7 ppg). Ashley (8.7 ppg) and Cokie (7.3 ppg) are third and fourth in scoring. As close as those two are in scoring, they are in FGs made and attempted with Chassidy going 14-43 (32.6%) and Ashleigh (16-42 (38.1%). Ashley (12-24), Nneka (4-8) and Kayla (1-2) are all hitting 50% of their FGs. Cokie (10-25, 40.0%), Chelsea (5-13, 38.5%), Yvonne (7-23, 30.4%) and Anne Marie (4-12, 33.3%) all have double digit FG attempts. Chassidy (4-17, 23.5%) and Chelsea (4-9, 44.4) top the team in 3pters made. Ashleigh (2-7, 28.6%) and Yvonne (1-7, 14.3%) are the other Horns that have attempted a 3 in league play. Every Horn except for Kayla has gotten to the FT line at least 4 times. Chassidy tops the team in FTs made and attempted (10-12, 83.3%). Ashleigh’s 87.5% (7-8) is the best on the team for conference play. Anne Marie at 4-5, 80.0% is the only other Horn over 67%.Ashley, Cokie, Chassidy and Nneka rank one through four in rebounding at 7.7 rpg, 7.0 rpg, 6.0 rpg & 5.3 rpg, respectively. Yvonne’s 21 assists tops the team. Ashleigh with six is second. Ashley has eight blocks while Cokie and Anne Marie have 3 each. Ashley also leads the team in steals with 9 while Chassidy has five and Yvonne and Ashleigh each has four steals.

Horns have 14 players listed on their roster. Four are out due injury or illness. Of the ten currently able to play, nine have played in the three league games. Eight of those are averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Only Chassidy (32.7 mpg) and Ashleigh (32.0 mpg) are averaging over 30 mpg. Ashley (26.7 mpg), Cokie (23.0 mpg), Chelsea (24.7 mpg) and Yvonne (29.7 mpg) are at over 20 mpg. Anne Marie (14.0 mpg) and Nneka (13.3 mpg) are the key post players off the bench. Kayla has played in all three games, averaging 4 mpg.

Projected starting lineups are based on the last game.

Texas Baylor

Ashley(6-4) Griner(6-8)
Cokie(6-4) Williams(6-1)
Yvonne(5-7) Sims(5-9)
Ashleigh(5-8) Hayden(6-0)
Chassidy(5-10) Madden(6-0) [/pre]

Texas will have to stop two of the nation’s best at their position in Griner and Sims. Williams and Pope, if she plays, benefit from the double and triple teams that Griner draws as she is effective at getting them the ball when they cut to the basket. For Baylor, they will need to stop Chassidy with either Hayden or Madden while looking for Griner to stop forays into the paint and keeping an eye on the Texas posts. Before the A&M game, that would mean shading towards Cokie but they will have to worry that Ashley will have another big offensive game if that happens. The Texas guards will need to hit from mid range and from BTA to complement the inside scoring. Pressure on Sims will be important to keep her from making easy passes to Griner. And the Texas posts will need to body Griner from her favorite spots in the paint where she can just raise up and shoot. This could be a blockfest as Griner ranks #1 nationally at 5.4 bpg and Ashley fourth at 3.7 bpg.

Baylor is running over Big 12 teams to the tune of 27.7 ppg. They capitalize on all areas scoring, shooting well overall (46.2%), from BTA (36.2%), inside the 3pt line (49.6%) and from the FT line (80.5%). They are averaging just a bit less in rebounding average than Texas but hold a plus11 rebounding edge over opponents. They move the ball around well, averaging 21.7 assists a game on 28 shots made per game. That’s an assist on almost 4 of every 5 shots made. Against A&M, Texas relied on their balanced scoring from the posts and guards. While that hasn’t always worked, that inside threat has helped to get the perimeter players clear shots. The posts, especially Ashley’s, output in the last game has to something that Baylor has to be concerned about.

A Texas win will depend on making it difficult for Griner to score by not allowing her to get to her favorite spots and by making difficult to get a pass inside to her. Strong on the ball defense on Sims will also help twofold: make it hard for Sims to get a pass inside to Griner and make it hard for her to score herself. Yvonne will probably start off on her but Ashley and Chelsea may also see action against her. Horns will need to hit their open shots and free throws. Which makes it important for Chassidy to be able to get to the FT line. This looks to be another physical game inside. For Baylor, keeping Griner and Sims out of foul trouble is critical to their chances for winning.

I re-watched the A&M game, and one thing that needs to be sharpened up is the Free Throws...we missed a bunch, esp in the one 'n one category...we need to get easy, uncontested points...

Come On, Texas, shock the World!!

You're right, BBV - we only shot 47% from the FT line. But that's an anomaly, and really shows just how good we were in that contest. If we had shot our normal % frrom the line we would have won by double-digits.

I agree about the FTs. Normally, the team is around 70%. Even with all those misses at A&M, they are hitting 67% in conference play. They usually hit a much higher percentage than 50%.

Well Cokie out and we're having a very hard time stopping Griner. 23-4 - BU. 12:55 to go in 1st hlf

Tiff in the game! Welcome back TIFF!!! Horns have intensified thier defense. Let's see what happens. 29-12 9:31 to go

We're doing pretty good on Sims. She has 2 but Griner has 19. 4:46 to go. 39-20.

I love the work of AG
If we just hit some shots, we would be in the game.
Lets come out ready the 2nd half ladies!

Tough loss for the Horns. Horns got a couple of bad breaks early and were unable to stop Griner from dominating inside. Cokie didn’t play due to a foot injury. She is day to day.

Four things I did like:
-Ashley’s continued offensive production
-Nneka’s defense on Griner. She played Griner the most and even got what looked
like a clean block although she was called for a foul.
-seeing Tiff on the floor for the first time this season.
-seeing Chassidy continue to play well offensively

Things I didn’t like seeing:
-Ashley getting into foul trouble early in both halves
-our players forgetting to cover the cutting Lady Bear, usually Williams, due to focusing on Griner. Griner is much better at finding the cutter when she is doubled and Williams is usually the beneficiary.
-our guards driving inside and turning it over because it seemed they had no plan to finish with Griner looming over them.

Something I wondered about:
-Mulkey twice pulling Griner for a rest when up 20 or so points and immediately sending her back in when Texas got a basket. Except when she came out of the game at the end, Griner barely had time to sit down and drink some water
before heading back in. Baylor is a different team with her in the lineup for sure.

ISU is coming in Wednesday and, at 0-4, they will be desperate to pull off the upset.

Some interesting stats:
Points in the paint-BU 58, UT 18. (This was BU’s power game. )
Points off turnovers-BU 10, UT 19. (each with 12 TOs)
2nd chance points-BU 18, UT 12. (Off. Rebs: BU 17, UT 14)
Fast break points-BU 12, UT 10.
Bench points-BU 2, UT 7

You are right, Babhorn, Griner played 37 minutes - it was unnecessary to play her that much, imho. Insecurity I guess, when the game changer is on the bench.

I know this was a bad game for the Horns, but I just want to say how proud I am of AG's offensive production. Without her shooting (and making some of) those 15 foot jumpers, we were basically playing 4 against 5 on the offensive end. Opponents now have to defend that, and I'm proud of her.

Well, I am not shocked we lost, but I am pleased we kept it under 20...with no Cokie, that wasn't too bad...

We WERE playing against the #1 Team in the country, and the BEST player in the country..

I WAS disappointed that we did not stop dribble penetration, and Williams got WAY too many points!!

Also, the Free Throws were not where they need to be...

It was good to see Tiff, she'll shake that rust off...

But Nneka...wow, will she be something SOON!!

AG's offense...excellent!! Wish Yvonne and AT had stepped up a little more!!

Thank God for Chas...w/o her, we'd be DIW...

AG I'm sooo glad you brought your offensive game yesterday. Keep SHOOTING!!!!

Before I continue, I admit I would really have liked to see the Longhorns win this game.

I know several posters on this board have stated that they wished Texas had offered the head coaching position to KM, that they would rather win with Kim Mulkey than lose with Coach G, but those remarks Kim made after the game were not very classy. First she dissed Texas by saying that in big 12 games you don't expect two players to have that many points and that many rebounds. (Why not say that her two players had a really good game? Nope, she has to pop Texas in the mouth) Then she claimed (because what comes around goes around?) to have not run up the score, when in fact, her high scorer played 37 minutes of the game.

So Kim's getting the results many posters on this board want for our Texas women. She's recruited successfully to this conference and to Waco (Divine province must have a hand in that).

I don't think she's a classy winner. I'd be embarrassed by a lot of what she says if she had been invited to Texas. If her bad mouthing of opponents and complaining about anything that doesn't go her team's way is what it takes to win in this conference, maybe I'm not a fan of this conference any more.

Was defnitely hoping for a better performance. While not having Cokie healthy hurt, the poor start is tough to overcome.

But, Baylor is a very talented team; no one has been able to beat them yet this season. What I think makes them very strong is having Destiny Williams and Brooklyn Pope at power forward. That is a position where we really need to recruit better. Nneka has lots of potential, but she seems a bit undersized to me.

Gotta regroup and get ready for ISU.

Coach Mulkey was just telling it as she calls it. She did not pop Texas in thd mouh although the final score suggests it. KM is a winner that will continue to dominate the Big XII for many many seasons.

Seattle

Hear hear, Baskets. There are many examples of KM's poor sportsmanship since she came to Baylor. She does tell it as she sees it, and I'm sure she will continue to be a presence in the Big 12, but the day she becomes coach is the day this 20-yr season ticket holder calls it a day.

Basketofhorns, you would have fit in nicely on this board last year. 'I would rather lose with GG than have a coach like Geno or KM' was the general spin of it all.

All winning coaches seem arrogant to the losers. Get used to it, or become a winner.

Baylor is No.1 for a reason.Theres been only 2 teams come within 10 points. I hate we loss, because the same effort was not there on the Offensive end of the floor. That I seen in the AM game. I seen a lot of sets for us to score, we just did not hit our shots.

I always laugh at all the love for coach milk on this board. I have had some connections to people in the Baylor locker room, past and present, and they always have a good laugh about that stuff too. She is a good basketball coach…..That’s all. Class she is not, but my impression is that she doesn’t care. Coaches are better when they have great players. In her third season with the best player in WCBB she has finally evened her record against Coach G.

The game Sunday had nothing to do with coach milk being better than Coach G. If Texas had made even a reasonable number of their open shots there would have been no 19-0 run and the game would have been much closer. Sometimes players have to make plays. Hats off to Baylor for making them.

There is no mystery why Griner stayed on the floor. Baylor is light years better when she is playing. Mack Brown was much better when he had Vince Young. Baylor is a great team with Griner. Coach milk is a good basketball coach. But, don’t make this into more than it is. Lots of coaches would win with Griner. Without Griner Baylor is just another good team.
