Texas hosts the number one ranked team this Wednesday as the Baylor Lady Bears come to Austin. Baylor (14-1; 1-0) takes on the Texas Longhorns (11-4; 0-1). With Waco only about an hour and a half away (90-100 miles), expect a large contingency of Lady Bears in Green and Gold to show up. Baylor will be looking for a bit of payback as Texas won both games last season and has a 5-2 record since the 2007-08 season. In conference play, the Lady Bears have three players in double figures, led by Brittney Griner’s (# 42, 6-8 Soph. P) 25 pts. Odyssey Sims (# 0, 5-9 Fr. PG) scored 15 in the first Big 12 game and Destiny Williams (# 10, 6-1 RS Soph. F/P) added 11 off the bench. All together, nine players got minutes in the game against ISU and eight had 13 or more minutes. Joining Griner and Sims as starters for the Lady Bears in this game were Brooklyn Pope (# 32, 6-1 RS Soph. F/P); Kimetria Hayden (# 1, 6-0 Soph. G); and Melissa Jones (# 5, 5-11 Sr. G). Jordan Madden (# 3, 6-0 Soph. G); Terran Condrey (# 20, 5-7 Jr. G) and Ashley Field (# 24, 6-2 Jr. P) also played. Sims (38), Hayden (30), and Jones (35) all played at least 30 minutes.
Griner was 9-15 (60.0%) from the field and a sterling 7-8 (87.5%) from the FT line. Baylor shot 81.8% from the FT line as three Lady Bears were perfect from the FT line: Sims (3-3), Hayden (2-2) and Jones (3-3). Sims led the way from BTA with 2-5 (40.0%) for Baylor. They didn’t shoot much from BTA but connected on 40% (4-10). Sims’ eight rebounds topped the Lady Bears while Griner, Jones, and Williams each added 5.
Both Pope and Griner had two blocks to lead the way in this category.
In Big 12 play, Texas is led by three players in double figures: Chassidy and Ashleigh with 22 pts each and Kat with 13 pts. Chassidy was 4-8 from BTA while Kat (1-3) and Yvonne (1-1) were the only other Horns to hit from BTA. Horns were a miserable 53.3% from the FT line as they only got there 15 times, going 8-15. Kristen (4-4) and Kat (2-2) were the only Horns to hit over 33.3% from the FT line. Horns had 50 rebounds with Kat’s 10 tops. Chassidy and Ashleigh each had 9 and Kristen had 8. Ashley led the team with 4 blocks. Nine players got into the Missouri game although only six were in double digit minutes.
Projected Starting Lineups:
[pre]
Texas Baylor
Kat (6-2) Pope (6-1)
Ashley (6-4) Griner (6-8)
Ashleigh (5-8) Hayden (6-0)
Chassidy (5-10) Jones (5-11)
Yvonne (5-7) Sims (5-9)
[/pre]
Griner will be the biggest problem for the Horns. The candidate for National POY is adept at scoring inside the paint. Horns will need to box out to keep her from capitalizing on offensive rebounds. Ashley will be the primary player responsible for this. She will need to be aggressive in boxing out and will need to play under control, avoiding fouls. Pope is a good player but Williams was more effective with Griner in the ISU game. Both are strong physical players. Will they be able to guard Kat at the 3pt line? Will Kat be able to keep them from establishing position inside? Sims is going to be a premier PG. She should get serious consideration for the Frosh AA team. Yvonne will have to work hard to limit her ability to penetrate while remembering that Sims is a good 3pt shooter. The matchup I would like to see is Chassidy vs Jones. Both high energy players that never quit. Both very good shooters that can penetrate and finish or make that outstanding pass. That should be something to watch when they do match up. The benches will be important in providing quality minutes to allow the starters to finish strong if the game is close.

In their Big 12 opener, Horns were unable to force TOs like they had in OOC and they had trouble limiting second chance opportunities by the Tigers, who used offensive rebounds to get extra shots. Except for the FT shooting, the Horns shot well from the field and from BTA. They will need to be aggressive on the boards and in getting to the FT line. About a quarter of their points usually come from the FT line and they were unable to get there against Missouri. After a slow paced first half, the Horns were running more in the second half but were unable to get stops at the end of the game when needed to put away the Tigers. Baylor presents a different problem. Sims will push the ball with little TOs. Griner will be difficult to stop inside. What Prins of ISU was able to do was push her a bit out of her comfort zone, put a hand in her face, and block out. Ashley will need to stay out of foul trouble and play at least 30 minutes to limit Griner’s effectiveness. Baylor showed a very effective perimeter defense against ISU. Griner’s ability to clean up if someone gets past the frontcourt players increases their effectiveness up front. Ashley provides the same comfort zone for Texas. The two biggest questions: will the Horns be able to get free BTA and make their 3s and will they be able to get to the FT line and convert? If they can do these, they have a chance to pull off the upset.
I doubt than anyone but the Texas players and staff think the Horns have a chance of pulling off the upset. The game will be in Austin where the team plays well although they suffered a loss to Tennessee earlier in the season here.
