Horns come into this game on a one game winning streak after defeating Michigan State this past Saturday 61-53 to run their record to 6-2. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is 0-7 after a 101-43 defeat by Kentucky at Lexington Sunday. This will be the second game between the Longhorns and the Lady Lions. Texas took a 114-53 win in Austin January 2, 2010. Game has been set for a late morning tipoff at 11AM this Wednesday. This will be the seventh straight away game for the Lady Lions.
For the Lady Lions, they have 15 players on the roster, 14 have played in all seven games and 10 have started at least one game. Ten players are averaging at least 11 minutes per game with Lakendra Marsh (# 22, 5-3 Jr. G) averaging 30+ mpg. Jenise Gentry (# 43, 6-0 Jr. F) and Chigozi Okwumabua (# 34, 6-1 Jr. F) are the only others averaging over 20 mpg. Those three are joined by seven others with at least one start: Amber Haggie (# 5, 6-1 Fr. G); Carlisha Walker (# 10, 5-11 Fr. G); Victoria White (# 12, 5-9 Fr. G); Corredur Vaden (# 14, 5-9 Fr. G); Markita Quarles (# 21-, 6-3 Jr. F); Jazmyne Victorian (# 32, 6-0 Fr. F); Alexi Rollins (# 33, 6-3 Fr. C) and Charnecia McRae (# 35, 6-2 Fr. G/F). Eight of those 14 are frosh.
Marsh (9.6 ppg), Gentry (7.4 ppg) and Okwumabua (7.1 ppg) are the leading scorers for the Lady Lions. A-PB is averaging 28.8% from the field with Makayla Warmley (4-5, 80%) the one player hitting over 40%. Gentry (18-56, 32.1%), Okwumabua (18-53, 34.0%) and Marsh (17-54, 31.5%) are the main threats from the field. Marsh, with 32 trey attempts, is the Lady Lions shooter from BTA. She has hit 12 of her 3pters for a respectable 37.5%. No other player has taken more than 7 treys. Four Lady Lions are hitting 100% from behind the arc but none have taken more than two shots. Marsh also has been the most effective at getting to the FT line, hitting 21-34 (61.8%). Walker (16-26, 61.5%), Gentry (16-23, 69.6%) and Okwumabua (14-21, 66.7%) are the others that have gone to the FT line at least 20 times. Vaden (7-10) is the only Lady Lion at 70% or better.
Gentry (4.9 rpg) and Walker (4.3 rpg) are the leading rebounders for A-PB. Marsh’s 14 assists lead the Lady Lions. Okwumabua and Walker with three blocks apiece have six of the team’s eight blocks. Okwumabua tops the Lady Lions with 14 steals. Walker with 8 and Vaden with 7 follow her in this category. TOs are a problem for the Lady Lions as they have turned the ball over twice as much as they have forced (244-120).
Horns are suffering from the injury bug with Tiffany and Brady yet to play this season and Cassie still seeing limited time at times as she continues to recover from leg surgery. This will be the first game that South Carolina transfer Kayla Brewer (6-1 Soph. F) will be eligible to play in. That will further strengthen a strong frontcourt. Texas has six players that can play in the post and four in the backcourt with two or three of the posts capable of playing the wing.
Going into this game, the Horns have 10 players that have played. Kayla will make that 11. Of the ten that have played, nine are averaging at least 14 minutes per game with Chassidy (32.0 mpg) and Yvonne (32.6 mpg) the only ones over 30 mpg. The other three starters besides Chassidy and Yvonne are averaging over 20 mpg. Anne Marie, Cassie, Chelsea and Nneka have played in all games they have been available for and average between 14 mpg (Nneka) and 17 mpg (Anne Marie).
As they have all season, the Horns have three players in double figures. Chassidy (15.9 ppg) leads the way with Yvonne (11.6 ppg) and Ashleigh (11.4 ppg) closely following. Cokie (8.4 ppg) and Anne Marie (5.9 ppg) are fourth and fifth in scoring. Chassidy leads in FGM & FGA with 45-102 (44.1%). Three others have taken over 60 shots for the season. Ronisha at 6-10 (60.%) tops the team in FG% while seven others average over 42%. Horns have five players that have attempted at least 12 3pters, led by Chassidy’s 42. Ashleigh tops the quintet in 3s made (10) and percentage from BTA (41.7%). Four players are hitting 75% or better on their FTs with Chassidy’s 93.3% (28-30) at the top of the list.Horns are led in rebounding by Ashley with 8.9 rpg. Cokie is second at 5.9 rpg. Five others average between 3.3 and 3.9 rpg. Yvonne’s 42 assists is almost twice as many as Ashleigh’s 23 which is second on the team. Chassidy has 15 while Ashley ranks fourth with 10.Yvonne also tops the team in steals with 21 with Ashley and Chassidy each having 9 steals. Ashley has 33 blocks with Cokie adding 11.
Projected starting lineups are based on the last game. Texas has started the same five all season while Arkansas-PB has yet to settle on a definitive lineup. Rollins and Haggie started their first game of the season against Kentucky. This makes ten different players that have started for A-PB, with six different starting lineups.
[pre]
Texas A-PB
Ashley (6-4) Quarles (6-3)
Cokie (6-4) Rolins (6-3)
Yvonne (5-7) Marsh (5-3)
Ashleigh (5-8) Vaden (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Haggie (6-1) [/pre]
The Lady Lions match up well with Texas sizewise. The problem for them has been taking care of the ball. Texas is likely to pressure and look to force TOs leading to easy baskets. Arkansas-Pine Bluff has done the same to teams they play but give it up far more often than they take it away. They actually outrebounded Kentucky by seven but gave up 19 offensive rebounds which lead to 29 second chance points by Kentucky. Marsh has been the focus of the Lady Lions offense, leading in ppg, FGA, 3pters made & attempted, FTs made & attempted and assists. Look for Yvonne to start off on her but the other guards to rotate on that responsibility. Okwumabua has been coming off the bench for the last couple of games but was the leading scorer against Kentucky.

Horns should roll over the Lady Lions. The closest loss for the Lady Lions was a 29 point loss to Memphis. Besides having trouble hitting their shots, the biggest problem for the Lady Lions has been TOs. They are averaging 35 TOs a game and committed 49 against Kentucky last time out. They are doing a good job keeping teams from hitting from BTA and in getting to the FT line. They average 22 FTs a game although their FT% is a very poor 59.7%. They have nine frosh on the roster although one has yet to play and three started the last game. Horns should be able to play everyone that is capable of getting on the floor. The Lady Lions are doing a good job stealing the ball so the Horns will need to be sharp with their passes and be careful when handling it to avoid giving A-PB opportunities to force TOs.
