#5/6 Texas travels to Oklahoma City to take on Arkansas as part of the Big 12/SEC WBB challenge. OU will take on Texas A&M in the second game. Texas is 9-0 while Arkansas brings a 3-7 record. Horns have dominated this series 3-21. The last game was a 67-50 win for Texas in 2003 in the NCAA Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Jessica Jackson (# 00, 6-3 Jr. F) is the leading scorer for the Razorbacks, averaging 17.2 ppg. Next are a pair of 8+ ppg scorers in Kelsey Brooks (# 15, 5-9 Jr. G; 8.9 ppg) and Alecia Cooley (# 35, 6-3 Jr. C; 8.4 ppg). Jackson is the player most likely to take the shot, with 138 shots in nine games (56-138; 40.6%). Jordan Danberry (# 24, 5-8 Fr. G) is second in FG attempts (26-92; 28.3%). Cooley is the most accurate Razorback from the field at 64.2% (34-53). Melissa Wolff (# 33, 6-0 Sr. F) is second in FG % at 41.1% (23-56). Their 3pt shooters, not unexpectedly, include Jackson (18-53, 34.0%); Devin Cosper (# 21, 5-10 Soph. G; 5-31, 16.1%); Bailey Zimmerman (# 22, 6-0 Fr. G/F; 4-23, 17.4%) and Brooks (5-22, 22.7%). Other than Jackson, no one else is hitting 3s at a higher rate than Brooks’ 22.7%. The team is at 23.3% (35-150) from BTA. As a team, Arkansas is hitting 68.5% from the FT line. Jackson is tops on the team in making and taking FTs (25-34, 73.5%). Other players that have hit double digits in FT attempts are: Cooley (16-22, 72.7%); Cosper (15-20, 75.0%); Danberry (11-17, 64.5%); Keiryn Swenson (# 4, 6-1 Fr. G/F; 13-17, 76.5%); Malica Monk (# 3, 5-5 Fr. G; 9-15, 60.0%); Kadijah West (# 32, 6-2 Fr. F; 7-13, 76.5%) and Briunna Freeman (# 12, 5-9 Fr. G; 5-11, 45.5%).

Jackson also leads the Razorbacks in rebounding with an average of 8.0 rpg. Wolff adds 7.0 rpg while Cooley is third on the team at 5.1 rpg. The Razorbacks have three players with at least 20 assists: Brooks (21), Monk (21) and Wolff (20) with Danberry (18) close to joining the 20+ assist club. Jackson has just over a third of the team’s blocks with 11 blocks. Cooley and Wolff are second with four blocks each. Monk has 13 steals to top the squad while Brooks (12), Jackson (11) and Danberry (10) have all reached double digits in steals.

In question is whether Brooks, their second leading scorer and top distributer, will return to the court against Texas. After starting six of the first seven games, Brooks has missed the last three. Monk, Cosper, Danberry, Wolff and Cooley have started the last two games for Arkansas. Only West and Zimmerman do not have at least one start in the young season. Wolff is the only player to have started all ten games. Cooley, Danberry, Cosper, Monk and Swenson have played in all ten games. Jackson, Freeman and West have played in nine games. Everyone except West averages double figures in minutes played. And, if you round off West’s 9.7 mpg, one could say that every player averages double digit minutes. Jackson (30.9 mpg) and Wolff (27.8 mpg) are the players on the court the most.

Imani (13.1 ppg) and Brooke (13.0 ppg) are the leading scorers for the Horns. Brianna (9.2 ppg) and LaShann (8.8 ppg) are third and fourth in scoring. The Horns’ FG% of 45.9 is bolstered by four players with FG% over 50%. These are: Imani (46-83; 55.4%); Brianna (35-64; 54.7%); Kelsey (28-49; 57.1%) and Sara (9-16; 56.3%). Three others average over 47% from the field. Brooke is the main threat from BTA for the Horns as her 41 attempts almost double the next closest player, Empress with 22 attempts. Brooke has hit 17 of her 3s for a percentage of 41.5%. Celina at 52.6% (10-19) has the best 3pt % among players that have taken at least 10 threes. Five players have attempted at least 25 FTs. Imani has made the most, 24-33, 72.7%. Brooke has the FT% among that group, hitting 22-26 for 84.6%.

Imani is inching closer to a double double with her team leading 9.0 rpg. Kelsey is second with 5.0 rpg. Brianna (4.6 rpg) and LaShann (4.9 rpg) provide strong support on the boards. Horns have three players doing an excellent job finding open teammates: Celina (3.4 apg), Empress (3.2 apg) and Brooke (2.8 apg). LaShann with 15 steals is tops in that category. Second is Brooke with 14 while Imani has 11. Imani has 18 blocks with Kelsey totaling 8.

Imani and Celina have started every game this season for Texas. Seven players have at least one start. Imani and Celina have been joined by Brianna, Empress and Brooke in the starting lineup recently. Brooke at 30.0 mpg is the only player to reach that 30 mpg threshold. Five others average 20+ minutes per game, with Celina second on the team at 26.2 mpg. Imani does all her damage in an average of 25 mpg. Two players average in the teens with three others averaging more than 9 mpg. Texas plays nine players in their main rotation with three others that have seen game action.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game:

Texas....................Arkansas
Imani (6-7).............Monk (5-5)
Brianna (5-9)..........Cosper (5-10)
Empress (5-9).........Danberry (5-8)
Celina (5-8)............Wolff (6-0)
Brooke (5-4).........Cooley (6-3)

Jackson is Arkansas’ leading scorer but has come off the bench the last two games after starting earlier in the season. Without her in the lineup, the Hogs have trouble scoring, especially if their second leading scorer, Brooks, is unable to play. If Jackson does not start, she will play 30+ minutes most likely. Arkansas has good height with three players listed at 6-3. That includes Jackson as well as Cooley. Look for both of them to play together at times, especially when Texas has both Kelsey and Imani together on the floor. Jackson’s ability to hit the 3pter will mean that Brianna will likely match up with her initially. Jordan is also likely to get a crack at her as well. Arkansas’ dilemma will be whether to double on Imani and Kelsey and take their changes on the Horns’ outside shooting or focus primarily on Brooke outside and see if they can handle Imani and Kelsey one on one. It would not be surprising to see a zone from the Hogs.

If the Horns play their game, they will cause Arkansas a lot of problems. Texas has a big advantage in overall FG%, 3pt FG% and 2pt FG%. While Arkansas has a slight edge in FT%, Texas is making almost as many FTs (15.7) as Arkansas attempts per game (16.8). Arkansas lost to #7 Oregon State 63-47. Expect at least a similar result when this game is in the books.

Gametime is 1:30 PM CST. The game will be carried on Fox Sports 1 (FS1). The Horn 104.9 FM will carry the radio boardcast.

Horns have gone over half the second quarter without scoring. Need to break this drought on the next trip.

Arkansas shoots 16% for the half and our down by 6 points. This first half is a summed up everything wrong with this team.

Horrible offensive execution or horrible offense? That was just pitiful in the second quarter.

Great to see Ariel back on the floor.

16-5 scoring edge to Arkansas in the second leaves Texas leading at the half 25-19 due to an outstanding first quarter. 11 of Horns' 30 shots have come from behind the arc. Hogs have 10 offensive boards to Horns' 4. Total rebounds are tied at 26. Texas has 9 blocks, most of those by Imani. However, she, Kelsey and Jordan have zero points. Sara and Brianna each has two points. That's only two points from our posts and two points from our F/G. I can see why Coach said our posts are playing soft.

that pass inside had some heat. Hogs shooting FTs at every foul with 6 and a half minutes to go in the third. Lots of TOs so far for the Horns. Man, wonder where all those fouls are coming from? That's really hurting us.

Horns force a TO. Nice to be on the other side of that. Got a chance to put a small run together.

Higgs with two almost identical steals leads to four quick points for the Horns and gives them a bit of breathing room going into the fourth quarter.

1:13 to find out if Texas will get win # 10 or if Arkansas will pull off the huge upset.
Let's go, Horns. pull it out.

gonna have to hit FTs here as you know that is what Arkansas will do, especially with the Horns not shooting well from the FT line. :hookem:

tough win, much tougher than expected. But Arkansas played a very tough game. They should get a lot of confidence from this, even though they lost.

Horns need to learn not to let up. They got to slow down and run their zone offense to get clean shots against the zones they are going to face.

Still, 10-0! Go, Horns! :hookem2:

You never apologize for winning and you don't apologize for being undefeated. But that kind of offensive play and performance is not going to cut it. 37% from the field, 21% from the 3 point line and 21 turnovers. Once again, Coach Aston and this offense needs to be better.

not enough firepower, inconsistent shooting. I like our team, it's a good one, but this kind of offense will get us beat some nights in the Big 12.

Yes, I said the same thing, playing like this will get us beat in the Big 12. They started off so well, and then just went cold and had 5 turnovers in a row, among a litany of missed shots, poor execution and turnovers. It was very frustrating. I was at the game and most of the turnovers were just silly. Kelsey was just completely out of sync and seemed to be afraid to shoot. Imani couldnt turn around without fouling. Thank goodness for Bri and also Higgs, they gave us lots of sparks. When Higgs came in for the first time, I turned to the OU fans I was sitting with and said, "She is going to be a spark on the floor" and the first thing she did was make a twisting drive the the bucket. She missed the shot but the effort was spectacular. They were mightily impressed. The two steals late in the game came at just the right time. The team really needed that. All in all a good game. I left at half time of OU and A&M and was really surprised to see that A&M won. OU was ahead at the half and looked pretty good. They must have fallen apart in the second half.

Yes, Higgs is going to be quite amazing as she becomes more disciplined. Turner saved the day in this game. I hope Ariel can get going quickly as conference games begin.
