This Sunday will be the last WBB game between the two schools in the foreseeable future as A&M moves to the SEC July 1st. It marks the final State Farm Lone Star Showdown in WBB. Texas snapped an 11 game losing streak to the Aggies with a 76-71 in College Station on Sunday, Jan. 08, 2012. For the Texas seniors, winning this game would give them a sweep after being swept by A&M for the first three years of their college careers. It would be especially sweet as it would be on their senior day. A&M is looking to remain tied for second with OU while Texas is looking to end up as high as possible in the conference standings. Texas wants to end this conference season with a three game winning streak to make a strong case for inclusion in the NCAAs. A&M wants to win the last game of conference, not just because it’s Texas they are playing but to gain a bit of momentum heading into the post season after their loss to Baylor last Monday. Final standings in conference are also in play, depending on the outcome of this game and others being played this weekend.
A&M is led by four players in double figures that score 48.1 pts of the 65.1 ppg that A&M is averaging. Tyra White (#20, 6-0 Sr. G) averages 13.3 ppg. Adaora Elonu (# 21, 6-1 Sr. F) is at 11.9 ppg. Kelsey Bone (# 3, 6-4 Jr. C) adds 11.8 ppg. Sydney Carter (# 4, 5-6 Sr. G), with an average of 11.1 ppg, completes the quartet. Alexis Standish (# 10, 5-8 Fr. G) pitches in with 5.1 ppg while Karla Gilbert (# 34, 6-5 Soph. C) averages 4.8 ppg. While Carter (64-201, 31.8%) and White (94-234, 38.0%) have taken the most shots, their post players have been the most effective with Bone (90-164) at 54.9%, Elonu (75-157) at 59.9%, Gilbert (29-49) at 59.2% and Kelsey Assarian (# 40, 6-1 Sr. F) at 42.1% on 8-19. Ashleigh joins Chassidy as the other Horn that has attempted over 200 FGs (70-207, 33.8%). Horns are second in the league in 3pt FG percentage at 34.8%. Chassidy’s 41.4% (41-99) from BTA leads the team while Chelsea is second at 38.5% (15-39). The other guards, Yvonne and Ashleigh are at 26.8% (15-56) and 31.4% (16-51), respectively. Ronisha (1-3, 33.3%) has the only 3 made by the posts. The Horns have slowly been creeping toward 70% from the FT line. Ashley matched the point total of Bone and Elonu with her 17 points as she hit on 8 of 12 FGs. Penetration by the guards led to a 40 to 24 advantage for Texas in points in the paint. Horns had the edge in fast break points, 20-9 as well as points off turnovers, 13 to 12, a category A&M usually feasts on. Horns held A&M without a FG for the last 3 minutes of the game. A similar defensive effort will be needed Sunday. The starters for both teams scored 64 points. The Texas bench, providing 12 pts to 7 for A&M’s reserves, helped pull out the win for the Horns. A&M will start the same five as in their last game. Texas has had Anne Marie starting with Cokie coming off the bench. In addition, Chelsea has been playing better since returning from her injury and Ronisha comes in off two good games where she provided scoring and rebounding off the bench. Pratcher and Gilbert were the main reserves for A&M while Nneka, Anne Marie and Chelsea came in off the bench for the Horns. In the last two games, Texas has used a base rotation of nine players. Prior to that, they have used eight players. A&M routinely uses nine. Depth should not be an issue for either team.Stats are conference stats only. [pre] TEAM STATISTICS UT A&M

This should be a close game if you go by the stats. A&M has an edge scoring margin (+7.8 to -3.2) and FG % (42.1% to 38.6%) while Texas has the edge in 3pt shooting (34.8% to 29.3%) and FT percentage (68.6 to 67.3). One area where A&M holds a big statistical edge is Turnover Margin as they are a plus 5.71 while Texas is at a plus 0.12. Texas came away with a 76-71 win in College Station the time these two met. The one area that Texas did not do well in was FT shooting as they shot 46.7%. Maybe they were just trying to keep all shooting percentages in the 40s as they hit 47.8% of their FGs and 45.5% of their threes.
A&M was 15-22 from the FT line compared to the Horns’ 7-15. They did a very good job of getting the FT line. Horns will need to reverse that Sunday. They need to get to the FT to take advantage of their FT shooting. It is especially important for the guards to be shooting FTs.
A&M should bring a good sized crowd for the last game at the FEC. They have the last few times. They expect to win over the Horns. The loss in College Station was a bit of shock. Time for the Horns to do it again.
