Texas comes into the sixth game of the series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on a roll, having won 4 in a row to start the season. AMCC is coming off a close loss to UT Pan American this past Wednesday, 49-45, on the Islanders’ home court. This runs their record to 0-7 this season. The last game between these teams was in 2008 with Texas taking a 87-36 win. AMCC did come close to pulling off an upset in 2006, losing by five, 73-68. The average margin of victory has been 28.4 pts. The most pts scored by Texas has been 88 (2007) while AMCC has scored a maximum of 68 in 2006. The least points scored by Texas have been 64 in the first game in 2003 while the least scored by AMCC has been 36 in 2008. AMCC has a new head coach in Royce Chadwick, who was the head coach at Marshall the past 11 seasons.
The Islanders are led in scoring by guard Janae Blount (# 10, 5-9 Fr.) who the only player in double figures, averaging 11.9 ppg. Ashley Darley (# 3, 5-6 RS Jr. G) adds 9.7 ppg. Jessica Jammer (# 21, 5-10 Sr. G) is the third scoring option at 6.3 ppg. Blout (26-83, 31.3%), Darley (27-65, 41.5%) and Jammer (20-54, 37.0%) are the only players to have taken at least 50 FG attempts. Only one player has a higher FG% than Darley’s 41.5% but she has only taken two shots, making one. Five players have attempted at least 10 treys, led by Blount’s 13 of 35 (37.1%) from BTA. Alisa Roberts (# 5, 5-7 Sr. G) has taken the second most 3pters but has connected on just 3 (13.6%). Darley is their second most accurate shooter from BTA, hitting 5-14 (35.7%). Marquesha Anderson-Sparks (# 12, 5-7 Jr. G; 3-13, 23.1%) and Taryn Gregory (# 33, 5-6 Jr. G; 2-10, 20.0%) are other potential threats from BTA. Three Islanders are averaging 3 plus FTs per game: Roberts (11-23, 47.8%), Blount (18-22, 81.8%) and Anderson-Sparks (18-21, 85.7%).
The Islanders are not a strong rebounding team, bringing in a minus5.7 rebounding margin. Part of the reason is that only two players are over 6 feet, Ashanti Plummer (# 22, 6-2 Fr. F) and Morgan Schwartz (# 30, 6-2 Jr. F). Those two average 2.6 rpg. The leading rebounder is Jammer at 5.3 rpg. Darley (3.7 rpg) and Brandi Huff (23, 6-0 Jr. F; 3.3 rpg) are the next two leading rebounders. Gregory (13 assists), Blount (11 assists) and Verne'qua Taylor (# 24, 5-6 Sr. PG; 10 assists) lead the Islanders in distributing the ball. Huff’s three blocks tops the team. In steals, four players have at least 11, led by Darley’s 15.
Fourteen players have gotten into games for the Islanders. Ten have played in all seven games. Those ten average between 13 and 27 mpg. Nine of those ten have started at least one game. Plummer, Darley, Blount, Jammer and Gregory started the last game against UT-Pan American. Darley has started all seven games while the other four have started six of the seven games.
Texas has three players in double figures: Nneka averaging 24 ppg; Chassidy at 19.8 ppg and Cokie at 10 ppg. Empress and Imani both are at 7.5 ppg. Nneka and Chassided are tied with 51 FG attempts each. Nneka has hit 35 for a 68.6% average while Chasside has connected on 25 (49%). Imani (14-23) is at 60.9% from the field while Cokie is hitting 50% of her FG attempts (16-32). Chassidy has taken just under 50% of the Horns’ threes: 20 of the team total of 45. She has made 9 for a 45% rate from BTA. Nneka (3-3, 100%) and Empress (2-4, 50%) are the other Horns that have made more than one trey. Three players have attempted at least 10 FTs: Nneka (23-33, 69.7%); Chassidy (20-24, 83.3%) and Cokie (8-12, 66.7%).
Nneka is averaging a double double as she adds 13.0 rpg to go with her 24 ppg. Imani (6.8 rpg) and Anne Marie (6.7 rpg) rank second and third. Three others average over 5 rpg. As a team, the Horns average 5.3 rpg. Celina leads the team in assists with 23 while Empress has 12. Brady is third with 9 assists. Three posts lead the way in blocks: Imani (15), Cokie (8) and Nneka (7). Nine of the players have at least one steal with Empress’ eight topping the team.Nneka and Chassidy are one-two in Big 12 scoring. Nneka also leads the league in rebounding. In that category, Imani is a two way tie for 9th and Anne Marie is in a three way tie for 11th. Another category that Nneka tops the league is FG%. Imani is fifth in that one. Celina is fourth in assists while Empress is in a four way tie for 11th. Chassidy is 11th in FT%. Empress is tied for 13th in steals. Chassidy is tied for 4th in 3pt FG%. Three players are in the top five in blocks: Imani is 2nd, Cokie 3rd and Nneka is in a 3 way tie for fifth. Celina is first in A/TO ratio (2.56) while Empress is tied for 12th (1.0). Nneka is second in offensive rebs (4.5), Imani is in a 3 way tie for 9th (3.0) and Cokie is 13th (2.75). In defensive rebounding, Nneka ranks first (8.5), Anne Marie is tied for fifth (5.0) and Celina is tied for 8th (4.75).
Like in their last home game, the Longhorns will have a huge height advantage inside. With only two players over 6 feet, the Horns are likely to focus on finding the post players in scoring position. The Islanders are basically starting a four guard rotation. Plummer (6-2), Schwartz (6-2) and Huff (6-0) are the only ones playing regularly that are at six feet or better. The only other 6 footer is Zenobia Winbush (# 25, 6-0 Fr. F) from nearby Schertz has yet to play this year.

This should be another easy tuneup for the Horns as they prep for UCLA next week. But a lack of focus will cause this to be a closer game than it should be. The Islanders were unable to hit a 3pter in their last game. They should have similar trouble against the UT guards. They do not have a strong rebounding team nor a strong scoring presence inside to force Texas to double team inside. The Texas posts, at this time, all four of them, should be able to dominate inside rebounding and scoring.
Tipoff is 11 AM.
First come first seated in Sections 20 and 35 and below the rail in Section 21. This is being made to allow schools to sit together.
Parking will be the same as for a regular game.
The Longhorn Network will carry the game with Fran Harris providing play by play and Debbie Antonelli doing the analysis. Kat Kelly is the reporter. Craig Way will provide play by play on KVET 1300 AM with Amie Smith Bradley as the analyst.
If last year was any indication, this is going to one noisy game. It should be a ton of fun to watch.
I missed the game but watched a lot of it as best I could using the Longhorn Network app on my iPad. Empress apparently has an ankle problem and was in a boot. I never saw Ro there. Chassidy took an elbow to the head in the first half and they later said she had a concussion. Cokie took an elbow to the head in the second half and never came back. They played some zone in the second half. A&M CC was never really in the game but they exposed some issues as forcing Texas to shoot from the outside without Chassidy on the floor appeared to be an adventure……..Of course I was actually “working” and only saw this on a small screen so there could easily be a lot that I missed.
I was listening to the game on the radio and those schoolgirls were really freaking loud!!!! It was irritating to me after a about 5 minutes, I can immagine how frustrated AM-CC felt after only scoring 9 points in the first half.
