TEXAS TRACK

We might be in for a real shock when we compete in this years' outdoor championships.

The women's team might get their lowest ranking in a really long time. If they all perform mistake free, the best they can do is get 13 points

UT usually gets that amount of points from individuals NOT the whole team. The worst part is that TEXAS A&M should win this years' title with ease.

The men's team will do OK, but not enough for a top 5 performance. They should rack up 22 points. A&M on paper should get about 40 points and in good position to contend for the title as well.

BUBBA AND BEV.....it is time to get working on RECRUITING!!!! I knew PAT leaving LSU would be trouble for us because LSU wasn't going to drop much, but now A&M is getter way better.

Women 7th in Big 12. That is pretty sorry.

The men have done pretty well the past few years based on the performances of several superstars, most of whom will be gone after this year.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Thornton cannot recruit a decent group of sprinters while ATM, Baylor and even Tech fare better in that regard. Weren't the sprints Thornton's specialty at TCU? Texas HS has loads of good sprinters, but Texas rarely signs them.

Branyon, you ask an interesting question. I for one can't understand why a track athlete would go to Lubbock, Waco, or College Station over Austin to compete during their college career. These athletes must be looking at other factors than school location when making their decision. Coaching has to be one of those factors as these recruits must see them as a better opportunity to reach the next level as a competitor.
That being said, and I've said it on this board before, this is unacceptable. There is no reason why Texas should not have top track and feild team in the conference and nation, especially womens t&f because they don't lose scholorships due to title 9 like mens t&f. The funding is there, the facilities are there, the missing peice needs to be filled and these programs need to get back on track.

The women finish a dismal 45th with 5 points at nationals.
Athletes who were in the top 5 nationally in their event finish 6th and 7th in the sprints. Things need to get turned around and fast!

The key word was...."should".

On paper, A&M should have won the NC title.

Wallace was not supposed to win his event. That was pure luck and that is why Texas ended in 4th place. Without those 10 points, Texas would not be Top 10.

These things happen.

TEXAS should have won the Big 12 baseball championship and they didn't. A&M track didn't get it done.

Take away the best athletes from LSU, A&M, or ASU....and they would end up just like our women did.

Our best athletes were not competing because they turned pro or were doing something else.

I don't see what "with ease" and "should" have anything to do with it.

TEXAS A&M should have won the title with ease, but they choked!!!!

Do you know anything about track? TEXAS has choked before in track and field. They were the favorite when UCLA women won it and UT was the host of the NCAA championship. Pat Henry told the NCAA that we had used tennis balls on the track and UT was disqualified for that.

Had he not opened his mouth, his LSU team would have won the title that year. Our disqualification gave UCLA an opportunity to compete in the final event and they won the whole thing by one.

We did so terrible that year and we were supposed to win it all.

A&M's best athletes are freshmen and sophomores (men). Our best athletes are seniors and juniors. We don't have to agree on this. It is ok, but we can re-open the conversation in 3 or 4 years. The field events that we used to win will be empty after this year with the exception of pole vault, manzano will be gone, the other distance runners will be gone, Hernandez, etc....where are we going to get points from??? Not from the sprinters!!!!! We have none!!!!

naked bongo,

I am not sure what you are trying to get across.

I am supporting Texas track. I am not sure why you think I am not.

I did say that A&M should probably win the NC with ease and it didn't happen, but that's it. I am glad we ended up ranked higher than them in the championship. I didn't expect that and neither did the voters. Good job HORNS!!!

On the women side......you really don't think there could be a problem when A&M is getting really high ranked classes the past 3 years??

I know high ranked classes doesn't alway turn into success, but they sure help a lot.

I am just saying that we need to get a hold of recruiting again, whether it is a small class of world class athletes or a larger class with a lot of talent, but not really world class caliber.

Our women's team went through this. A&M has knocked off TEXAS from their throne because they were able to out recruit TEXAS while Sterkel and UT were on their last strand. Now with Brakin you can see that she is trying everything she can to bring the top athletes and I have no doubt in my mind that UT will once again be on top and the aggies are going to have their 2 or 3 championships to enjoy.

I am not saying the Bev should get fired because she is an excellent coach!!! Pat Henry has alway been Bev's nemesis and he hates her. Even when they were in different conferences. Now he has invaded HER conference!!!!!! And he is beating her!!!!!! I know Bev can get out of this, but recruiting is definitely a big factor.

I am on TEXAS' side, man!

The lack of sprinting has been a major worry for me the last few years. After Christian, there hasn't been much. And hurdlers? Not much. Deyaf was the best recently, but he's gone. Decathalon dominance is gone as well. We've got another high jumper and a pole vaulter for a few years. But the sprints...

At least Vigilante seems to be a pretty good lure for the distance guys. I thought Hernandez was a junior. Are you expecting him to go pro? (I can see that if that's what you meant.)

You know there's only 4 guys on the roster listed as sprints?

No, I am not saying Hernandez will go PRO. He is a junior, but I am worried that our good athletes aren't being replaced by younger talent.

I am not sure why sprinters don't want to come to TEXAS. What lures them to Tech, TCU, etc.

Men's team recruited pretty well this year. They got Marquise Goodwin and DJ Monroe!!! They also have a great new-coming middle distance & distance group coming in due to Vig's success.

If some of the soph & jr to be steps up during offseason, they will be fine.
